Scarlet Letter's unstable American father
textThis essay seeks to explore the various representations of fatherhood in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter. Although The Scarlet Letter is Hawthorne’s most-studied text, very little critical attention has been paid to Hawthorne’s rendering of paternity in the story. This essay attempts to fill that void by examining the roles of the many father figures in the novel. I argue that Hawthorne’s anxiety about fatherhood, made manifest by his constant doubling and expunging of father figures, dominates the narratives of both The Scarlet Letter and “The Custom-House,” binding the texts together and providing the framework of the novel. The structure of The Scarlet Letter relies on Hawthorne’s continual introduction of potential fathers for Pearl, auditioning and discarding various paternal models – a process that carries implications both for Pearl, and for American fatherhood. I further contend that the figure of the absent father is a key thematic component of the American Renaissance as a whole, reflecting not only the authors’ personal fears, but also their anxieties about England’s paternal relationship to America – a concern that pervades the text of The Scarlet Letter.Englis

Innovations in Sentencing: The Use of Scarlet Letter Dispositions
Scarlet letter sentencing dispositions are innovative alternatives to incarceration posited as special probation conditions granted to offenders deemed able to live in the community. These sanctions resemble scarlet letter punishments of the Seventeenth Century as illustrated in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Scarlet Letter for Hester Prynne. They are designed as bumper or windshield stickers, yard signs, screen prints on T-shirts, and public apologies. This study investigates the proliferation of these innovative penalties created by judges to require drunk drivers, sex offenders, thieves/burglars, white-collar criminals, and drug offenders to publicly disclose the nature of their crime and identify themselves as perpetrators. Societal and inmate attitudes toward crime and punishment are considered to determine if the threat of public exposure can deter criminal activity and protect the public. Convicted offenders’ perception of probation as punishment versus incarceration is considered to determine whether they fear probation more than imprisonment. The legal context of judicial discretion and the use of scarlet letter dispositions suggests problems with judicial reviewability and the advantages and disadvantages of using scarlet letters to punish convicted offenders. An exploratory study of Nebraska’s 4th Judicial District Judges was conducted. The feasibility of scarlet letter dispositions may only be meaningful to those judges who impose them

Hugo Pratt’s and Milo Manara’s Indian Summer: An Italian “Source” for The Scarlet Letter
This paper examines the allusions of Milo Manara’s and Hugo Pratt’s
graphic novel, Tutto ricominciò con un’estate indiana (Indian Summer),
to Hawthorne’s novel The Scarlett Letter in a variety of ways. In particular,
this paper argues that not only some of Pratt and Manara’s characters
are very liberal, creative reinventions of Hawthorne’s figures—they might
be seen as “spin-offs” of Hawthorne’s narrative—but in many ways
Indian Summer is also thematically close to The Scarlet Letter

The Scarlet Letter: Embroidering Transcendentalism and Anti-transcendentalism Thread for an Early American World
Published in 1850 by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the dark romantic story of The Scarlet Letter was immediately met with success, and Hawthorne was recognized as the first fictional writer to truly represent American perspective and experience. At the time when most novelists focused on portraying the outside world, Hawthorne dwelled deeply in the innermost, hidden emotional and mental psyches of his characters. Despite being acquainted to both famed transcendentalists Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau and married to the transcendentalist painter Sophia Peabody, Hawthorne was often referred to as anti-transcendentalist or dark romantic writer in The Scarlet Letter. Is he also influenced by the transcendentalist movement in his famed novel? Â Evidence shows that he is more transcendentalist than anti-transcendentalist in The Scarlet Letter
