    Towards the solution of variants of Vehicle Routing Problem

    Some of the problems that are used extensively in -real life are NP complete problems. There is no any algorithm which can give the optimal solution to NP complete problems in the polynomial time in the worst case. So researchers are applying their best efforts to design the approximation algorithms for these NP complete problems. Approximation algorithm gives the solution of a particular problem, which is close to the optimal solution of that problem. In this paper, a study on variants of vehicle routing problem is being done along with the difference in the approximation ratios of different approximation algorithms as being given by researchers and it is found that Researchers are continuously applying their best efforts to design new approximation algorithms which have better approximation ratio as compared to the previously existing algorithms

Thereafter a model is introduced that aids in the production scheduling of plate via coil in a hot strip mill. Finally the benefits of the scheduling model are shown

    Online Service with Delay

    In this paper, we introduce the online service with delay problem. In this problem, there are nn points in a metric space that issue service requests over time, and a server that serves these requests. The goal is to minimize the sum of distance traveled by the server and the total delay in serving the requests. This problem models the fundamental tradeoff between batching requests to improve locality and reducing delay to improve response time, that has many applications in operations management, operating systems, logistics, supply chain management, and scheduling. Our main result is to show a poly-logarithmic competitive ratio for the online service with delay problem. This result is obtained by an algorithm that we call the preemptive service algorithm. The salient feature of this algorithm is a process called preemptive service, which uses a novel combination of (recursive) time forwarding and spatial exploration on a metric space. We hope this technique will be useful for related problems such as reordering buffer management, online TSP, vehicle routing, etc. We also generalize our results to k>1k > 1 servers.Comment: 30 pages, 11 figures, Appeared in 49th ACM Symposium on Theory of Computing (STOC), 201

    Scheduling to minimize power consumption using submodular functions

Here each processor has an arbitrary specified power consumption to be turned on for each possible time interval, and each job has a specified list of time interval/processor pairs during which it could be scheduled. (A processor need not be in use for an entire interval it is turned on.) If there is a feasible schedule, our algorithm finds a feasible schedule with total power usage within an O(log n) factor of optimal, where n is the number of jobs. (Even in a simple setting with one processor, the problem is Set-Cover hard.) If not all jobs can be scheduled and each job has a specified value, then our algorithm finds a schedule of value at least (1 - c)Z and power usage within an O(log(1/E)) factor of the optimal schedule of value at least Z, for any specified Z and c > 0. At the foundation of our work is a general framework for logarithmic approximation to maximizing any submodular function subject to budget constraints. We also introduce the online version of this scheduling problem, and show its relation to the classical secretary problem. In order to obtain constant competitive algorithms for this online version, we study the secretary problem with submodular utility function.     Solving the Traveling Salesman Problem with release dates via branch and cut

    In this paper we study the Traveling Salesman Problem with release dates (TSP-rd) and completion time minimization. The TSP-rd considers a single vehicle and a set of customers that must be served exactly once with goods that arrive to the depot over time, during the planning horizon. The time at which each requested good arrives is called release date and it is known in advance. The vehicle can perform multiple routes, however, it cannot depart to serve a customer before the associated release date. Thus, the release date of the customers in each route must not be greater than the starting time of the route. The objective is to determine a set of routes for the vehicle, starting and ending at the depot, where the completion time needed to serve all customers is minimized. We propose a new Integer Linear Programming model and develop a branch and cut algorithm with tailored enhancements to improve its performance. The algorithm proved to be able to significantly reduce the computation times when compared to a compact formulation tackled using a commercial mathematical programming solver, obtaining 24 new optimal solutions on benchmark instances with up to 30 customers within one hour. We further extend the benchmark to instances with up to 50 customers where the algorithm proved to be efficient. Building upon these results, the proposed model is adapted to new TSP-rd variants (Capacitated and Prize-Collecting TSP), with different objectives: completion time minimization and traveling distance minimization. To the best of our knowledge, our work is the first in-depth study to report extensive results for the TSP-rd through a branch and cut, establishing a baseline and providing insights for future approaches. Overall, the approach proved to be very effective and gives a flexible framework for several variants, opening the discussion about formulations, algorithms and new benchmark instances

    A bi-objective model for the single-machine scheduling problem with rejection cost and total tardiness minimization

    We study the problem of scheduling jobs on a single machine with a rejection possibility, concurrently minimizing the total tardiness of the scheduled jobs and the total cost of the rejected ones. The model we consider is fully bi-objective, i.e. its aim is to enumerate the Pareto front. We tackle the problem both with and without the presence of hard deadlines. For the case without deadlines, we provide a pseudo-polynomial time algorithm, based on the dynamic program of Steiner and Zhang (2011), thereby proving that the problem is weakly NP-hard. For the case with deadlines, we propose a branch-and-bound algorithm and prove its efficiency by comparing it to an \u3b5-constrained approach on benchmark instances based on those proposed in the literature on similar problems
