Kant and the Simple Representation “I”
The aim of this paper is to focus on certain characterizations of “I think” and the “transcendental subject” in an attempt to verify a connection with certain metaphysical characterizations of the thinking subject that Kant introduced in the critical period. Most importantly, two distinct meanings of “I think” need be distinguished: in the Transcendental Deduction “I think” is the act of apperception; in the Transcendental Deduction and in the section of Paralogisms “I think” is taken in its representational nature. It proves helpful to interpret the “transcendental subject” in formal terms as a concept that, mutatis mutandis, has the same function of the concept of the “transcendental object.
Approximate syllogistic reasoning: a contribution to inference patterns and use cases
In this thesis two models of syllogistic reasoning for dealing with arguments that involve fuzzy quantified statements and approximate chaining are proposed. The modeling of quantified statements is based on the Theory of Generalized Quantifiers, which allows us to manage different kind of quantifiers simultaneously, and the inference process is interpreted in terms of a mathematical optimization problem, which allows us to deal with more arguments that standard deductive ones. For the case of approximate chaining, we propose to use synonymy, as used in a thesaurus, for calculating the degree of confidence of the argument according to the degree of similarity between chaining terms. As use cases, different types of Bayesian reasoning (Generalized Bayes' Theorem, Bayesian networks and probabilistic reasoning in legal argumentation) are analysed for being expressed through syllogisms
Revelation of the Trinity: Karl Rahner's position and an evangelical alternative
The widely accepted Grundaxiom of Karl Rahner's doctrine of the Trinity, "The
economic Trinity is the immanent Trinity and vice versa," functions in contemporary
theology as a means of reconciling the seemingly contradictory claims: (a) that God
has revealed the doctrine of the Trinity to the church; and (b) that he has not
disclosed this doctrine verbally in Scripture. Rahner's Grundaxiom, that is to say,
serves to legitimate theological reflection on the Trinity that does not presuppose a
pre-Enlightenment understanding of Scriptural revelation.In our dissertation, however, we argue: (a) that Rahner's Grundaxiom does not
cohere with certain elements of Rahner's own theology; (b) that the Grundaxiom
entails conclusions inconsistent with what Rahner regards as Trinitarian orthodoxy;
and (c) that a pre-Enlightenment understanding of Scripture, by contrast, constitutes
a reasonable foundation for Rahner's ideal of Trinitarian orthodoxy. We conclude,
therefore (d) that, barring the possibility of some third foundation for the theology of
the Trinity, Rahner's doctrine of the Trinity itself presupposes a pre-Enlightenment
conception of Scriptural revelation

Representing Context: Presupposition Triggers and Focus-sensitivity
This dissertation investigates the role of Focus-sensitivity for a typology of presupposition triggers. The central hypothesis is that Focus-sensitive triggers require a linguistic antecedent in the discourse model, whereas presuppositions of triggers lacking Focus-sensitivity are satisfied as entailments of the Common Ground. This hypothesis is supported by experimental evidence from two borne out predictions. First, Focus-sensitive triggers are sensitive to the salience of the antecedent satisfying their presupposition, as operationalized via the Question Under Discussion, and lead to interference-type effects, while triggers lacking Focus-sensitivity are indifferent to the QUD-structure. Second, Focus-sensitive triggers are harder to globally accommodate than triggers lacking Focus-sensitivity. The picture that emerges from these results is that the same kind of meaning - presuppositions - is grounded in distinct underlying representations of context in relation to an independent property of the trigger - Focus-sensitivity - which directly affects the way a trigger is processed

This book provides an introduction to the study of meaning in human language, from a linguistic perspective. It covers a fairly broad range of topics, including lexical semantics, compositional semantics, and pragmatics. The chapters are organized into six units: (1) Foundational concepts; (2) Word meanings; (3) Implicature (including indirect speech acts); (4) Compositional semantics; (5) Modals, conditionals, and causation; (6) Tense & aspect.
Most of the chapters include exercises which can be used for class discussion and/or homework assignments, and each chapter contains references for additional reading on the topics covered.
As the title indicates, this book is truly an INTRODUCTION: it provides a solid foundation which will prepare students to take more advanced and specialized courses in semantics and/or pragmatics. It is also intended as a reference for fieldworkers doing primary research on under-documented languages, to help them write grammatical descriptions that deal carefully and clearly with semantic issues. The approach adopted here is largely descriptive and non-formal (or, in some places, semi-formal), although some basic logical notation is introduced. The book is written at level which should be appropriate for advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate students. It presupposes some previous coursework in linguistics, but does not presuppose any background in formal logic or set theory
