Leadership New England: Essential Shifts for a Thriving Nonprofit Sector

The ongoing, against-the-odds resiliency of the nonprofit sector in New England and across the country is remarkable to see. But as this study shows, it is a very fragile resiliency. The sector's success and impact continue to rely on unsustainable trends, including: overworked, underpaid leaders and staff; a never-ending fight to balance budgets and build stable organizations; a lack of investment in professional and leadership development and organizational infrastructure; and a continuing struggle to work out the optimal role for nonprofit boards. Nonprofits in New England and across the nation will continue to play a vital part in building stronger communities and a more just and equitable society. But the sector's resiliency is at its outer limit.As this report sets out to show, it is time to shift how we think about nonprofits in New England and consider what supports they need to succeed. To the extent we do so, we will be able to predict with certainty that New England's nonprofits can remain resilient and effective well into the future -- and can continue to contribute to the vibrancy of our communities, our people and our region.This report profiles New England's nonprofits and their leaders and recommends three shifts in that will help the sector become more sustainable and healthy

Meeting the Stranger: Closing the Distance in Ernest Hemingway’s \u3ci\u3eA Moveable Feast\u3c/i\u3e

This thesis provides an in-depth analysis of Ernest Hemingway’s memoir, A Moveable Feast. The analysis focuses on how AMF functions as a memoir, given its complicated publication history. The thesis uses the 2009 Restored Edition, which is most closely associated with Hemingway’s original manuscripts. He crafts his memories of Paris between 1921-1926, develops interactive scenes for twenty-first century readers to discover his story, and constructs a blended voice that closes the distance between his present and his past by writing about his writing process. This thesis adds to the academic conversation of A Moveable Feast, attempting to present how important Hemingway’s final work is to the rest of his writing and how relevant it is to twenty-first century readers

Prokofiev’s “Romeo and Juliet” and Socialist Realism: a Case-Study in Intersemiotic Translation

This paper is concerned with Prokofiev’s ballet score, Romeo and Juliet, as an inter-semiotic translation of Shakespeare’s play. My aim is to consider Prokofiev’s distinct interpretation of the play in the light of the political climate of the Soviet Union in the 1930s and to attempt to determine the extent to which it conforms to the norms of Socialist Realism. This is by no means an easy matter, for the composer was at different times lauded by the authorities and vilified by them, while the work itself has been appropriated by both sides of the ideological divide. Nevertheless, close examination of the musical discourse reveals important alterations to Shakespeare’s original concept, shedding some light upon the composer’s own ideology and consequently upon his relationship to the regime under which he lived

The Unfinished Work: The Civil War Centennial and the Civil Rights Movement

The Civil War Centennial celebrations fell short of a great opportunity in which Americans could reflect on the legacy of the Civil War through the racial crisis erupting in their nation. Different groups exploited the Centennial for their own purposes, but only the African Americans and civil rights activists tried to emphasize the importance of emancipation and slavery to the memory of the war. Southerners asserted states’ rights in resistance to what they saw as a black rebellion in their area. Northerners reflected back on the theme of reconciliation, prevalent in the seventy-fifth anniversary of the war. Unfortunately, those who had the most power to make an impact, government officials like the President and other Governors, tread lightly over the civil rights movement and instead focused on uniting a nation over anti-communism and Cold War sentiment. Fortunately, fifty years later, our nation has begun to recognize the real cause of the Civil War, but the “unfinished work” is not done
