This work proposes a localization method using a mechanically scanned imaging sonar (MSIS), which stands out by its low cost and weight. The proposed method implements a Particle Filter, a Bayesian Estimator, and introduces a measurement model based on sonar simulation theory. To the best of author’s knowledge, there is no similar approach in the literature, as sonar simulation current methods target in syntethic data generation, mostly for object recognition . This stands as the major contribution of the thesis as allows the introduction of the computation of intensity values provided by imaging sonars, while maitaining compability with the already used methods, such as range extraction. Simulations shows the efficiency of the method as well its viability to the utilization of imaging sonar in underwater localization. The new approach make possible, under certain constraints, the extraction of 3D information from a sensor considered, in the literature, as 2D and also in situations where there is no reference at the same horizontal plane of the sensor transducer scanning axis. The localization in complex 3D environment is also an advantage provided by the proposed method.

Cooperative Navigation for Low-bandwidth Mobile Acoustic Networks.

This thesis reports on the design and validation of estimation and planning algorithms for underwater vehicle cooperative localization. While attitude and depth are easily instrumented with bounded-error, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) have no internal sensor that directly observes XY position. The global positioning system (GPS) and other radio-based navigation techniques are not available because of the strong attenuation of electromagnetic signals in seawater. The navigation algorithms presented herein fuse local body-frame rate and attitude measurements with range observations between vehicles within a decentralized architecture. The acoustic communication channel is both unreliable and low bandwidth, precluding many state-of-the-art terrestrial cooperative navigation algorithms. We exploit the underlying structure of a post-process centralized estimator in order to derive two real-time decentralized estimation frameworks. First, the origin state method enables a client vehicle to exactly reproduce the corresponding centralized estimate within a server-to-client vehicle network. Second, a graph-based navigation framework produces an approximate reconstruction of the centralized estimate onboard each vehicle. Finally, we present a method to plan a locally optimal server path to localize a client vehicle along a desired nominal trajectory. The planning algorithm introduces a probabilistic channel model into prior Gaussian belief space planning frameworks. In summary, cooperative localization reduces XY position error growth within underwater vehicle networks. Moreover, these methods remove the reliance on static beacon networks, which do not scale to large vehicle networks and limit the range of operations. Each proposed localization algorithm was validated in full-scale AUV field trials. The planning framework was evaluated through numerical simulation.PhDMechanical EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H. Node localization in underwater sensor networks (UWSN)

This dissertation focuses on node localization in underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) where anchor nodes have knowledge of their own locations and communicate with sensor nodes in acoustic or magnetic induction (MI) means. The sensor nodes utilize the communication signals and the locations of anchor nodes to locate themselves and propagate their locations through the network. For UWSN using MI communications, this dissertation proposes two localization methods: rotation matrix (RM)-based method and the distance-based method. Both methods require only two anchor nodes with arbitrarily oriented tri-directional coils to locate one sensor node in the 3-D space, thus having advantages in a sparse network. Simulation studies show that the RM-based method achieves high localization accuracy, while the distance-based method exhibits less computational complexity. For UWSN using acoustic communications, this dissertation proposes a novel multi-hop node localization method in the 2-D and 3-D spaces, respectively. The proposed method estimates Euclidean distances to anchor nodes via multi-hop propagations with the help of angle of arrival (AoA) measurements. Simulation results show that the proposed method achieves better localization accuracy than existing multi-hop methods, with high localization coverage. This dissertation also investigates the hardware implementation of acoustic transmitter and receiver, and conducted field experiments with the hardware to estimate ToA using single pseudo-noise (PN) and dual PN(DPN) sequences. Both simulation and field test results show that the DPN sequences outperform the single PNs in severely dispersive channels and when the carrier frequency offset (CFO) is high --Abstract, page iv

The use of robots in marine and underwater applications is growing rapidly. These applications share the common requirement of modeling the environment and estimating the robots’ pose. Although there are several mapping, SLAM, target detection and localization methods, marine and underwater environments have several challenging characteristics, such as poor visibility, water currents, communication issues, sonar inaccuracies or unstructured environments, that have to be considered. The purpose of this Special Issue is to present the current research trends in the topics of underwater localization, mapping, SLAM, and target detection and localization. To this end, we have collected seven articles from leading researchers in the field, and present the different approaches and methods currently being investigated to improve the performance of underwater robots
