The Intersection of Art and Technology

    Get PDF
As art influences science and technology, science and technology can in turn inspire art. Recognizing this mutually beneficial relationship, researchers at the Casa Paganini-InfoMus Research Centre work to combine scientific research in information and communications technology (ICT) with artistic and humanistic research. Here, the authors discuss some of their work, showing how their collaboration with artists informed work on analyzing nonverbal expressive and social behavior and contributed to tools, such as the EyesWeb XMI hardware and software platform, that support both artistic and scientific developments. They also sketch out how art-informed multimedia and multimodal technologies find application beyond the arts, in areas including education, cultural heritage, social inclusion, therapy, rehabilitation, and wellness

    Japanese Modernism Across Media

    Get PDF
This essay examines the pedagogical benefits of implementing a semester-long digital curation project using the open-source web-publishing platform Omeka Classic. It discusses the importance of teaching students to critically analyze the role of images in society as well as how to develop skills for evaluating various forms of digital media and resources. By using experiential learning pedagogy to establish connections between Japan studies and visual studies, this article explores the significant value of teaching visual literacy as well as encouraging students and scholars alike to consider the possibilities and limits that result at the intersection of art and technology

The Metamorphic Role of the Artist Across the Digital Technology Timeline

    Get PDF
The intersection of art and technology has reached unprecedented heights, with digital technologies emerging as novel tools and collaborators in the realm of artistic creation. How do artists navigate the intricate web of challenges (concerns of authenticity, authorship, and copyright) while embracing the potential of digital collaboration and appropriation? From ‘isolated genius’ to ‘entrepreneur’, the fusion of art and technology has redefined what it means to be an artist, with tasks such as coding, digital rendering, data analysis, as well as social networking, becoming as crucial as traditional craftsmanship. Through a chronological exploration of pivotal moments, Jelena Guga will uncover how artists have not merely reacted to digital trends but actively forged new pathways, redefining their identity and impact and unveiling a narrative of adaptability, innovation, and reflection.Information on the symposium, here: https://ulus.rs/blog/iaa-europe-symposium-arts-and-robots/?lang=en Recording of the symposium, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UNUyesqlY

The dancer in the eye: Towards a multi-layered computational framework of qualities in movement

    Get PDF
This paper presents a conceptual framework for the analysis of expressive qualities of movement. Our perspective is to model an observer of a dance performance. The conceptual framework is made of four layers, ranging from the physical signals that sensors capture to the qualities that movement communicate (e.g., in terms of emotions). The framework aims to provide a conceptual background the development of computational systems can build upon, with a particular reference to systems analyzing a vocabulary of expressive movement qualities, and translating them to other sensory channels, such as the auditory modality. Such systems enable their users to "listen to a choreography" or to "feel a ballet", in a new kind of cross-modal mediated experience

[EN] This article is an exploration of the self-organized initiatives of women that have emerged at the intersection of art and technology in Spain.
