    A browsing tool for the Internet Logical Library of the HPCC Software Exchange

    As the quantity of information available on the Internet grows, locating a particular piece of information becomes more difficult. One possible solution is for a database of pointers to all available information to be maintained at a central site. Subject classifications for all the information could also be maintained in order to make searching possible. This paper describes one possible method of searching such an index. In particular a prototype browsing tool has been created using TCL/TK to demonstrate several possible features: rapidly scanning at any rank of the index, narrowing the index to any scope, regular-expression searching, and creation of a list of pointers answering to any set of index terms. The prototype browser is an easy-to-use independent X application designed for use in the Catalog of Repositories of the HPCC (High Performance Computing and Communications) Software Exchange

    Specification and Implementation of a Light-Weight Internet Content Delivery Platform

    The World Wide Web is the largest and most popular hypertext information system in the world. It is used by billions of people primarily to share information between themselves. As more and more features are added to it, modern Web has become a powerful general-purpose application platform. The cost of that complexity is the content itself being obscured behind all the layout, presentation and interaction. This thesis specifies a simple protocol and document format intended to solve the problem of exceeding complexity of using the Web to access content sources without using complicated monolithic applications that require powerful hardware to run. This provides an alternative to the current Web technologies for browsing pages focused on the content itself, while being significantly simpler to implement and use. By using the new technologies, accessing content sources becomes simple, while the current Web remains useful as an application platform. Foremost, this simplifies creation of new browser engines that are easier to implement and need less processing resources to run. At the same time, it enables programmatic access to content that used to be accessible only to human readers

    A RESTful Architecture for the Development and Deployment of Companion Robots Applications

    ABSTRACT Improving the quality of life particularly for the elderly and disabled persons is essential for society today. Despite their existing disabilities and limitations the elderly and the disabled still need and desire to be an integral part of society. Statistics shows that the number of persons requiring home health care in the year 2040 will make up nearly 3.5 % of the population. The need for companion robots is growing with factors such as an aging population, limited infrastructure and social support. Robots capable of assisting people in daily tasks and providing various services represent part of the future solution. The lack of a reusable platform is a significant obstacle to such a solution. In this thesis, we are proposing an architecture that will enable the development and deployment of companion robots applications. The architecture consists of a set of components at different layers, ranging from low-level robotics services to end user application components. The multiple layers interact through RESTful web services. This architecture enables the development of a range of applications, and can deal with robots that have varying capabilities and hardware

    A SECURE INFORMATION INFRASTRUCTURE FOR SERVICE ORIENTED ARCHITECTURES

    In today's ever-evolving design environments, a focus switch is needed from workstation-centric software tools to distributed services. For Computer-Aided Design, the use of distributed services has the potential to incorporate all of the needed software features for a given project into a new design system that utilizes services. Thus, the designer would have access to features that are not locally installed. This thesis presents a secure middleware solution for design environments. The secure middleware solution provides a system architecture and information infrastructure to facilitate the needs of the designer while also providing access to remote services. The system architecture and information infrastructure are designed with the designer in mind by providing access to any file at any time at any location, and the ability to submit jobs to any available services. These fundamental components are implemented as to not compromise security or accountability. Enabling the system architecture are four fundamental technologies created for this system. They include: (1) a Secure Java Messaging Service, (2) Verification Services, (3) Gateway and Directory Services, and (4) a Secure File System. Through the creation of these four technologies, the system architecture and information infrastructure was developed and deployed into a simulated design environment. Results showing the benefits of this design environment over other design environments are explored within this thesis. Overall, the secure middleware solution for design environments benefits designers and enterprises in a secure, traceable, and accountable manner
