Uncertainty in Multi-Commodity Routing Networks: When does it help?

We study the equilibrium behavior in a multi-commodity selfish routing game with many types of uncertain users where each user over- or under-estimates their congestion costs by a multiplicative factor. Surprisingly, we find that uncertainties in different directions have qualitatively distinct impacts on equilibria. Namely, contrary to the usual notion that uncertainty increases inefficiencies, network congestion actually decreases when users over-estimate their costs. On the other hand, under-estimation of costs leads to increased congestion. We apply these results to urban transportation networks, where drivers have different estimates about the cost of congestion. In light of the dynamic pricing policies aimed at tackling congestion, our results indicate that users' perception of these prices can significantly impact the policy's efficacy, and "caution in the face of uncertainty" leads to favorable network conditions.Comment: Currently under revie

Towards Trustworthy, Efficient and Scalable Distributed Wireless Systems

Advances in wireless technologies have enabled distributed mobile devices to connect with each other to form distributed wireless systems. Due to the absence of infrastructure, distributed wireless systems require node cooperation in multi-hop routing. However, the openness and decentralized nature of distributed wireless systems where each node labors under a resource constraint introduces three challenges: (1) cooperation incentives that effectively encourage nodes to offer services and thwart the intentions of selfish and malicious nodes, (2) cooperation incentives that are efficient to deploy, use and maintain, and (3) routing to efficiently deliver messages with less overhead and lower delay. While most previous cooperation incentive mechanisms rely on either a reputation system or a price system, neither provides sufficiently effective cooperation incentives nor efficient resource consumption. Also, previous routing algorithms are not sufficiently efficient in terms of routing overhead or delay. In this research, we propose mechanisms to improve the trustworthiness, scalability, and efficiency of the distributed wireless systems. Regarding trustworthiness, we study previous cooperation incentives based on game theory models. We then propose an integrated system that combines a reputation system and a price system to leverage the advantages of both methods to provide trustworthy services. Analytical and simulation results show higher performance for the integrated system compared to the other two systems in terms of the effectiveness of the cooperation incentives and detection of selfish nodes. Regarding scalability in a large-scale system, we propose a hierarchical Account-aided Reputation Management system (ARM) to efficiently and effectively provide cooperation incentives with small overhead. To globally collect all node reputation information to accurately calculate node reputation information and detect abnormal reputation information with low overhead, ARM builds a hierarchical locality-aware Distributed Hash Table (DHT) infrastructure for the efficient and integrated operation of both reputation systems and price systems. Based on the DHT infrastructure, ARM can reduce the reputation management overhead in reputation and price systems. We also design a distributed reputation manager auditing protocol to detect a malicious reputation manager. The experimental results show that ARM can detect the uncooperative nodes that gain fraudulent benefits while still being considered as trustworthy in previous reputation and price systems. Also, it can effectively identify misreported, falsified, and conspiratorial information, providing accurate node reputations that truly reflect node behaviors. Regarding an efficient distributed system, we propose a social network and duration utility-based distributed multi-copy routing protocol for delay tolerant networks based on the ARM system. The routing protocol fully exploits node movement patterns in the social network to increase delivery throughput and decrease delivery delay while generating low overhead. The simulation results show that the proposed routing protocol outperforms the epidemic routing and spray and wait routing in terms of higher message delivery throughput, lower message delivery delay, lower message delivery overhead, and higher packet delivery success rate. The three components proposed in this dissertation research improve the trustworthiness, scalability, and efficiency of distributed wireless systems to meet the requirements of diversified distributed wireless applications

Swarm Intelligence-Optimized Energy Management for Prolonging the Lifetime of Wireless Sensor Networks

Recent technological and industrial progress has enabled the development of small, high-performing, energy-saving, affordable sensor nodes that possess the potential to adapt, be self-aware, and self-organize. These nodes are designed for versatile communications applications. Sensor networks for sustainable development focus on the ways in which sensor network technology can enhance social development and improve living standards without causing harm to the environment or depleting natural resources. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) offer undeniable benefits in various fields, including the military, healthcare, traffic monitoring, and remote image sensing. Given the constraints of sensor networks, varying degrees of security are necessary for these critical applications, posing difficulties in the implementation of conventional algorithms. The issue of security has emerged as a primary concern in the context of IoT and smart city applications. Sensor networks are often regarded as the fundamental building blocks of IoTs and smart cities. The WSN encompasses a routing algorithm, network strength, packet loss, energy loss, and various other intricate considerations. The WSN also addresses intricate matters such as energy usage, a proficient approach for picking cluster heads, and various other concerns. The recent growth of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) has made it increasingly difficult to ensure the trustworthiness and reliability of data due to the distinct features and limitations of nodes. Hostile nodes can easily damage the integrity of the network by inserting fake and malicious data, as well as launching internal attacks. Trust-based security is employed to detect and identify rogue nodes, providing a robust and adaptable protection mechanism. Trust evaluation models are crucial security-enhancement mechanisms that enhance the reliability and collaboration of sensor nodes in wireless sensor networks. This study recommends the use of DFA UTrust, a unique trust technique, to effectively satisfy the security requirements of WSNs

Game theory for collaboration in future networks

Cooperative strategies have the great potential of improving network performance and spectrum utilization in future networking environments. This new paradigm in terms of network management, however, requires a novel design and analysis framework targeting a highly flexible networking solution with a distributed architecture. Game Theory is very suitable for this task, since it is a comprehensive mathematical tool for modeling the highly complex interactions among distributed and intelligent decision makers. In this way, the more convenient management policies for the diverse players (e.g. content providers, cloud providers, home providers, brokers, network providers or users) should be found to optimize the performance of the overall network infrastructure. The authors discuss in this chapter several Game Theory models/concepts that are highly relevant for enabling collaboration among the diverse players, using different ways to incentivize it, namely through pricing or reputation. In addition, the authors highlight several related open problems, such as the lack of proper models for dynamic and incomplete information games in this area.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Adaptive Interventions for Social Welfare Maximization in Network Games

We consider the problem of steering the actions of noncooperative players in quadratic network games to the social optimum. To this end, a central regulator modifies the marginal returns of the players, while the players’ strategies are determined by continuous pseudo-gradient dynamics. Depending on the available information on the players parameters and network quantities, suitable static and dynamic intervention protocols are devised that maximize the social welfare at steady-state. We show that adaptive interventions can compensate for the lack of knowledge on network topology and coupling weights. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed interventions
