    The Effect of Visual Arts on At-Risk Students

    Creation through visual art is demonstrated by a variety of all ages. Visual art-based learning is known to build focus, reduce stress, provide a sense of accomplishment, and spark an increase in well-being. Many people have been known to benefit from the creation of art. With the COVID-19 pandemic back in 2020, educators across the country have noticed an increase of students who are considered at-risk. Many school districts have made it a priority to look at ways of improving these students’ behavior, participation, view on school, or overall well-being. This research study takes place at a rural Wisconsin high school and focuses on viewing the effect that visual arts have on students who are considered at-risk. Many different instruments such as student reflections, behavior tracking programs, attendance tracking programs, observations, and interviews were used though the data collection process. Perceived though the data collected and findings, it has been shown that visual arts can have an effect on students who are at-risk

    This research paper is a phenomenological analysis of a creative project involving University of Northern Iowa undergraduate art students in the planning and creation of visual illustrations, graphic design concepts, .html documents, and imagery for a world wide web intranet/lnternet virtual space. This analysis looks at instructional design as a creative process and the phenomenology of the UNI Art/Cat (Art Resources Technology/Computer Assisted Training) computer laboratory. The mission, goals, and objectives of the creative project, experiential and experimental philosophies of education, and the phenomenologies of the instructional design process are the main considerations. The methodology of this thesis is primarily concerned with action research and research as lived experience. The generational aspects of computer hardware and software and the affective aspects of the evolution of the infrastructure upon instructional development is examined. This generation of techno-apparatus includes the Macintosh G3 Personal Computer in a network environment, Afga and Hewlett Packard Flatbed Scanners, Polaroid Slide Scanners, Adobe Graphic Design Software, and Symantec Visual Page Web Design Software. Commentary on the social and bureaucratic considerations in this particular creative project and discussion of the collaboration with UNI Art Department administration, faculty, and students is included with the final conclusions and recommendations

    Harvested and Grown: the rise of a new bio-materiality

    Keynote abstract: We are in the midst of a transition from the industrial revolution to a biological revolution and this will have a great impact on what and how we design in the future. Not only we can acknowledge the advantage of biological systems in terms of zero waste, minimum use of energy and materials, but with synthetic biology, we can now ‘biofabricate’ like Nature does. Leather grown in a lab, yeast reprogrammed to produce silk, bacteria that grow a shoe, are but a few examples of current biotechnological breakthroughs. This keynote will map out the current landscape of biodesign and examine the rise of this new bio-materiality and its implication on design research. From botanical experiments to synthetic biology propositions, this paper will present a series of design case studies that question the notion of ‘knowledge making’ in the context of working with living systems. What becomes of the design process when working with living materials? If we can turn a yeast into a living factory, what language will designers need to learn? Could the intersection of design and biology lead to novel sustainable fabrication processes? What are the ethical implications of biofabrication

    A COMPARISON BETWEEN MOTIVATIONS AND PERSONALITY TRAITS IN RELIGIOUS TOURISTS AND CRUISE SHIP TOURISTS

    The purpose of this paper is to analyze the motivations and the personality traits that characterize tourists who choose religious travels versus cruises. Participating in the research were 683 Italian tourists (345 males and 338 females, age range 18–63 years); 483 who went to a pilgrimage travel and 200 who chose a cruise ship in the Mediterranean Sea. Both groups of tourists completed the Travel Motivation Scale and the Big Five Questionnaire. Results show that different motivations and personality traits characterize the different types of tourists and, further, that motivations for traveling are predicted by specific —some similar, other divergent— personality trait
