Educating managers for business and government : a review of international experience

Managers, in both the private and public sectors, are increasingly recognized as critical in the use of scarce resources for national development. There is no unanimity of opinion, however, regarding the models or approaches to management education that are most appropriate in different environmental settings. This report encompasses management education for each of the following groups: the managers and future managers of large scale enterprises; entrepreneurs and small businessmen; and public administrators. It reviews worldwide trends and developments in management education for lessons in such areas as curriculum design, research and teaching methodology, and institutional policies and administration. Experience is drawn from recognized universities, educational organizations, civil service institutes, and corporations in several major countries and regions of the world.ICT Policy and Strategies,Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Teaching and Learning,Curriculum&Instruction,Primary Education

International trade and investment in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union

How should one analyze the economic relations between advanced capitalist systems and other economic systems? So far the economists have mainly concentrated their efforts on studying the relations between developed capitalist countries (henceforth DCs) and the less developed countries (henceforth LDCs) of the world. There has not, however, been a significant effort in devising a systematic theory of economic relations between DCs and the socialist countries. I intend for my dissertation to be a contribution in that direction. It is concerned with investigating the role of international trade and investment in the countries of Eastern Europe. In the process of observing the economic relations of the DCs and LDCs, two major schools of thought have emerged: the dependency school and the diffusionist (mainstream neo-classical) school. The latter, in general, sees the positive aspects of the links between DCs and the poor countries. The dependency perspective, on the other hand, argues that the problems of the poor (peripheral) countries are, in fact, their economic relations with the DCs (center). The exploitation by the center draws off most of the surplus that otherwise might have been used in the process of industrialization of the poor countries. My dissertation begins by examining how these two schools of thought have been theoretically successful in incorporating yet another dimension of the economic relations between different economic systems--the relations between the DCs and the socialist countries. In addition, my dissertation will also focus on another approach which I will refer to as the Eastern European approach. In the final chapter I will try to empirically verify the validity of the theoretical investigations of these schools. My conclusion is that although all the approaches discussed in my dissertation make some contribution to understanding East-West economic relations, none are entirely successful in presenting an accurate picture of such economic relations

Application of AHP to multicriteria inventory classification

Ankara : The Faculty of Management and Graduate School of Business Administration of Bilkent Univ., 1993.Thesis (Master's) -- Bilkent University, 1993.Includes bibliographical references leaves 65-67.In this thesis, a new method based on the application of Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to ABC inventory classification is investigated. The traditional ABC classification method utilizes only the unit price and the annual usage of inventory items. However, in some cases, the classification done using only these two criteria turns out to be insufficient. The method described in this thesis enables the integration of several criteria that can be organized in a hierarchy into ABC classification. The method can be summarized as follows: A matrix is constructed by the pairwise comparison of criteria on the highest level. The elements of the eigen vector of this matrix represent the weights (priorities) of the criteria. If a criterion has subcriteria in the hierarchy, the weights computed in the similar manner for the subcriteria are multiplied by the weight of the criterion and inserted in its place. Repetition of these steps for aU levels of the hierarchy, the weight of all criteria are determined. Using the criteria weights determined by the AHP technique, the weighted score of each inventory item is computed. The items sorted by that weighted score are grouped in three classes: A, B, and C, as in the classical ABC classification. This new method is applied to the classification of inventory items used in rock excavation jobs done using blasting by a construction company. The same inventory is also classified according to the classical ABC technique, and the results are compared.GĂĽvenir, NurayM.S
