From visual comparison to robust satellite techniques: 30 years of thermal infrared satellite data analyses for the study of earthquake preparation phases
This review paper reports the main contributions and results achieved after more
than 30 years of studies on the possible relationships among space-time variation of
Earth’s thermally emitted radiation, measured by satellite sensors operating in the
Thermal InfraRed (TIR) spectral range (8-14 m), and earthquake occurrence. Focus
will be given on the different existing methods/models to: 1) discriminate a possible
pre-seismic TIR anomaly from all the other TIR signal fluctuations; 2) correlate such
anomalies with space, time and magnitude of earthquakes; 3) physically justify such a
correlation
Earth’s Outgoing Longwave Radiation Variability Prior to M ≥6.0 Earthquakes in the Taiwan Area During 2009–2019
This paper proposes an analysis method, using the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration satellite data, to trace variations in outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) for finding the precursors of earthquakes. The significance of these observations is investigated using data sets of recent M ≥6.0 earthquakes around the Taiwan area from 2009 to 2019. We suggest that the precursory signal could be an EIndex anomaly (EA) in the form of substantial thermal releases distributed near the epicenter. The consecutive appearances of OLR EAs are observed as precursors 2–15 days before significant earthquakes, and we refer to this as a pre-earthquake OLR EIndex anomaly (POEA). We interpret these thermal sources as possibly originating from electromagnetics together with gas emissions associated with pre-seismic processes. This study highlights the potential of OLR anomalous changes in earthquake precursor studies, at least in the Taiwan region

Data Processing and Modeling on Volcanic and Seismic Areas
This special volume aims to collecg new ideas and contributions at the frontier between the fields of data handling, processing and modeling for volcanic and seismic systems. Technological evolution, as well as the increasing availability of new sensors and platforms, and freely available data, pose a new challenge to the scientific community in the development new tools and methods that can integrate and process different information. The recent growth in multi-sensor monitoring networks and satellites, along with the exponential increase in the spatiotemporal data, has revealed an increasingly compelling need to develop data processing, analysis and modeling tools. Data processing, analysis and modeling techniques may allow significant information to be identified and integrated into volcanic/seismological monitoring systems. The newly developed technology is expected to improve operational hazard detection, alerting, and management abilities

Geospatial Analyses of Seismic Hazards and Risk Perception in Libya
Libya is not considered a highly active seismic region. However, several earthquakes of magnitude \u3e5.0 have occurred there. This dissertation analyzes the seismicity of Libya in order to better understand earthquake hazards, related geomorphic features, and the current evolution of Libyan perceptions of seismic risk. The first article developed a baseline of past and current seismic inventory in Libya, which represented an assessment of Libya seismic hazard by translating, analyzing, and compiling historical sources and archaeological data. This study shows that Libya has experienced earthquakes in varying degrees since ancient times. Through the spatial and temporal distribution of earthquakes from 1900-2019 strongly suggest Libya can be divided into three seismologically active regions. The second article uses remotely-sensing images to identify seismogenic surface features in different locations in the country. Different geomorphic features are identified and classified through multi-scalar techniques and represent the crucial procedure in identifying potentially hazards seismogenic features. The final article uses the administration of survey instruments to assess post- and pre-event perception of seismic hazard and risk in Al-Marj – a city razed in the 1963 earthquake. Demographic, educational, economic, hazard, and vulnerability questions in addition to Likert-scaled responses are used. This study finds that the correlations between demographics and Likert style responses revealed the differences in perceptions between age, education, technology, and gender categories, in addition to the general lack of belief in the use of seismic predicting. When natural hazards in Libya like earthquake recurrence are better understood, then the potential consequences of injury, damages, and deaths may be assessed, and an overall plan to decrease risk can be created and implemented
