    Drilling for Papers in INKE

    Get PDF
In this article, we discuss the first year research plan for the INKE interface design team, which focuses on a prototype for chaining. Interpretable as a subclass of Unsworths scholarly primitive of discovering, chaining is the process of beginning with an exemplary article, then finding the articles that it cites, the articles they cite, and so on until the reader begins to get a feel for the terrain. The chaining strategy is of particular utility for scholars working in new areas, either through doing background work for interdisciplinary interests or else by pursuing a subtopic in a domain that generates a paper storm of publications every year. In our prototype project, we plan to produce a system that accepts a seed article, tunnels through a number of levels of citation, and generates a summary report listing the most frequent authors and articles. One of the innovative features of this prototype is its use of the experimental oil and water interface effect, which uses text animation to provide the user with a sense of the underlying process

Abstract This article focuses on how electronic information resources influence the information-seeking process in the different faculty members of Darul Ihsan University. The study was conducted at Darul Ihsan University (DIU), the first private university in Bangladesh. Teachers of various faculty members were interviewed about their use of electronic information resources for research purposes, their perception of electronic and print materials and the problems faced by the faculty members during information search. The statistical population is all members of faculty of Darul Ihsan University, Dhanmondi Dhaka. In order to make samples, given to the limitation of the statistical population, based on the tools for gathering data some questionnaires including 26 open and closed questions set in accordance with the survey’s critical queries

Influence of Electronic Information Resources on Publication Output of Librarians in Niger Delta and Delta State University, Nigeria

The publication output of librarians in the past years has been observed to be very poor as most of the librarians complain of the difficulty in writing journal articles to publish in reputable journals. This brought about the investigation of the influence of electronic information resources on publication output of librarians in Niger Delta University Bayelsa and Delta State University, Abraka in Nigeria. The descriptive survey design was used in the study. Questionnaire was the instrument used in collecting data. The population for the study was made up of 30 librarians in Niger Delta University Bayelsa and Delta State University, Abraka. The entire population was used as sample because of its small size. Data were analyzed using simple percentage, descriptive statistics. The study found that the publication output level of the respondents in the universities sampled is low; the most used electronic resource are EBSCOHOST, HINARI, Open Access Journal, Open Access Books, AJOL, AGORA and Science Direct. The study also shows that there was no significant relationship between electronic information resources and publication output of librarians though electronic Information had a negative influence on the publication output of librarians. The study therefore recommends that librarians should make good use of electronic information resources which will positively influence publication output. Using data from Ithaka S + R US Faculty Survey 2015, the current study examined the influence of disciplinary differences and experience levels as well as their interactions on scholars’ attitudes toward print and electronic materials. While results of 3 × 5 factorial ANOVA procedure indicated both disciplinary membership and experience played a role in scholars’ attitudes, effect size indicated disciplinary membership played a more crucial role. Significant findings include rising popularity of electronic formats across examined groups

DEMOGRAPHIC FACTORS AS CORRELATE OF USE OF LIBRARY INFORMATION RESOURCES BY UNDERGRADUATES IN NIGERIA

The study examined demographic factors as correlate of use of library information resources by undergraduates in Nigeria. One hypothesis was tested for the study and the descriptive research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study is 24,545 and 4284 undergraduate students in Delta State university, Abraka and Novena university, Ogume. The multistage sampling technique was used and a sample size of 367 (10%) was adopted. The instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire. The study revealed that among all the demographic factors that were considered (gender, age, level, income, marital status, residence and religion) only income, place of residence and marital status had significant positive relationship with use of library information resources by undergraduates in the two universities. Thus, the study concluded that demographic factors influence the level of use of library information resources. The researchers recommended that in order to ensure high use of library information resources; the library must provide regular and detailed orientation exercise for undergraduates in universities

Impact of Digital-Divide on Access and Use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) Resources for Research Productivity among Students of Universities in South East Zone of Nigeria

The cross- sectional survey research design was adopted to access the impact of digital-divide on the access and use of information communication technology (ICT) resources for research productivity among students of universities in the south east zone of Nigeria. The research was guided by 3 research questions and a hypothesis. Frequency Table and Mean (x) were the statistical measures employed for data analysis. Thereafter, stratified random sampling technique was used to select two universities from the ten public universities in the South East zone of Nigeria. Three faculties (Education, Arts and social Sciences) were purposively selected from the universities. Multi stage sampling technique was then used to obtain a sample size of 366 respondents drawn from a total of 3662 students from the selected universities in the south east zone of Nigeria. The instruments for data collection were structured questionnaire and observation checklist. Cronbach Alpha statistics was used to establish the reliability of the instrument and this yielded a reliability index of 0.87 revealing high internal consistency. The findings of the study revealed that there are still disparities, among universities / students of universities in the south east zone of Nigeria, in terms of provision, integration and adoption of ICT facilities as well as usage skill gaps among students and this impedes their research productivity. Recommendations were made on the need for digital balance and equality and it is advocated among others that university managements in Nigeria and other stakeholders must work concertedly to tackle the menace of digital divide through appropriate ICT policy/strategies as a way of guaranteeing equitable provision and integration of ICT facilities in the universities to ensure equitable access to and use of e-resources by academics in research. Effort Expectancy as Correlates of Electronic Information Resources use by Undergraduates of Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo State, Nigeria

The use of electronic information resources (EIRs) by undergraduates could impact positively on their academic activities. However, anecdotal and empirical evidences have shown that the use of some of these information resources by some undergraduates is low. Perhaps, this perceived observation might not be unconnected with the effort expectancy associated with the accessibility of EIRs which could affect their use by the undergraduates. The study therefore examines effort expectancy as correlates of use of electronic information resources by undergraduates in Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, Nigeria. Descriptive survey research method was used and the study population comprised of 5663 undergraduates of Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, Nigeria. The multistage random sampling technique was used to select a sample size of 140 and the questionnaire was used to collect data. Results revealed that a significant number of respondents (45.3%) and (37.4%) noted that e-news and e-encyclopedias were the most accessible EIRs. Majority of the undergraduates had a favorable expectancy of the use of EIRs. Results showed a significant positive relationship between effort expectancy and use of EIRs by the undergraduates (r=.277**; df=138; p<0.01). It was recommended that in order to sustain the favourable effort expectancy towards the use of EIRs by the undergraduates, librarians should introduce periodic digital literacy programmes and ensure that all undergraduates are encouraged to participate in it
