Evaluation of Multi-Level Cognitive Maps for Supporting Between-Floor Spatial Behavior in Complex Indoor Environments
People often become disoriented when navigating in complex, multi-level buildings. To efficiently find destinations located on different floors, navigators must refer to a globally coherent mental representation of the multi-level environment, which is termed a multi-level cognitive map. However, there is a surprising dearth of research into underlying theories of why integrating multi-level spatial knowledge into a multi-level cognitive map is so challenging and error-prone for humans. This overarching problem is the core motivation of this dissertation.
We address this vexing problem in a two-pronged approach combining study of both basic and applied research questions. Of theoretical interest, we investigate questions about how multi-level built environments are learned and structured in memory. The concept of multi-level cognitive maps and a framework of multi-level cognitive map development are provided. We then conducted a set of empirical experiments to evaluate the effects of several environmental factors on usersâ development of multi-level cognitive maps. The findings of these studies provide important design guidelines that can be used by architects and help to better understand the research question of why people get lost in buildings. Related to application, we investigate questions about how to design user-friendly visualization interfaces that augment usersâ capability to form multi-level cognitive maps. An important finding of this dissertation is that increasing visual access with an X-ray-like visualization interface is effective for overcoming the disadvantage of limited visual access in built environments and assists the development of multi-level cognitive maps. These findings provide important human-computer interaction (HCI) guidelines for visualization techniques to be used in future indoor navigation systems.
In sum, this dissertation adopts an interdisciplinary approach, combining theories from the fields of spatial cognition, information visualization, and HCI, addressing a long-standing and ubiquitous problem faced by anyone who navigates indoors: why do people get lost inside multi-level buildings. Results provide both theoretical and applied levels of knowledge generation and explanation, as well as contribute to the growing field of real-time indoor navigation systems
Ambient Intelligence for Next-Generation AR
Next-generation augmented reality (AR) promises a high degree of
context-awareness - a detailed knowledge of the environmental, user, social and
system conditions in which an AR experience takes place. This will facilitate
both the closer integration of the real and virtual worlds, and the provision
of context-specific content or adaptations. However, environmental awareness in
particular is challenging to achieve using AR devices alone; not only are these
mobile devices' view of an environment spatially and temporally limited, but
the data obtained by onboard sensors is frequently inaccurate and incomplete.
This, combined with the fact that many aspects of core AR functionality and
user experiences are impacted by properties of the real environment, motivates
the use of ambient IoT devices, wireless sensors and actuators placed in the
surrounding environment, for the measurement and optimization of environment
properties. In this book chapter we categorize and examine the wide variety of
ways in which these IoT sensors and actuators can support or enhance AR
experiences, including quantitative insights and proof-of-concept systems that
will inform the development of future solutions. We outline the challenges and
opportunities associated with several important research directions which must

Video browsing interfaces and applications: a review
We present a comprehensive review of the state of the art in video browsing and retrieval systems, with special emphasis on interfaces and applications. There has been a significant increase in activity (e.g., storage, retrieval, and sharing) employing video data in the past decade, both for personal and professional use. The ever-growing amount of video content available for human consumption and the inherent characteristics of video dataâwhich, if presented in its raw format, is rather unwieldy and costlyâhave become driving forces for the development of more effective solutions to present video contents and allow rich user interaction. As a result, there are many contemporary research efforts toward developing better video browsing solutions, which we summarize. We review more than 40 different video browsing and retrieval interfaces and classify them into three groups: applications that use video-player-like interaction, video retrieval applications, and browsing solutions based on video surrogates. For each category, we present a summary of existing work, highlight the technical aspects of each solution, and compare them against each other
Vertical Color Maps: A Data Independent Alternative to Floor Plan Maps
Location sharing in indoor environments is limited by the sparse availability of indoor positioning and lack of geographical building data. Recently, several solutions have begun to implement digital maps for use in indoor space. The map design is often a variant of floor-plan maps. Whereas massive databases and GIS exist for outdoor use, the majority of indoor environments are not yet available in a consistent digital format. This dearth of indoor maps is problematic, as navigating multistorey buildings is known to create greater difficulty in maintaining spatial orientation and developing accurate cognitive maps. The development of standardized, more intuitive indoor maps can address this vexing problem. The authors therefore present an alternative solution to current indoor map design that explores the possibility of using colour to represent the vertical dimension on the map. Importantly, this solution is independent of existing geographical building data. The new design is hypothesized to do a better job than existing solutions of facilitating the integration of indoor spaces. Findings from a human experiment with 251 participants demonstrate that the vertical colour map is a valid alternative to the regular floor-plan map

Advanced Location-Based Technologies and Services
Since the publication of the first edition in 2004, advances in mobile devices, positioning sensors, WiFi fingerprinting, and wireless communications, among others, have paved the way for developing new and advanced location-based services (LBSs). This second edition provides up-to-date information on LBSs, including WiFi fingerprinting, mobile computing, geospatial clouds, geospatial data mining, location privacy, and location-based social networking. It also includes new chapters on application areas such as LBSs for public health, indoor navigation, and advertising. In addition, the chapter on remote sensing has been revised to address advancements
Fixing the Maze: Redesigning the KSU Johnson Library Map
The purpose of this report is to research and implement new ways to redesign the KSU Johnson Library map and increase the amount of navigation signage. Through time studies and surveys, the team identified resources that take a long time to find. A second round of time studies and surveys was conducted to ensure that the new implementations, signages, and maps are effective. The team also suggests redesigning the floor plans to make them clearer and easier to understand. Team Scrappy concludes that the redesigned map and library signage have significantly improved the ease of navigation within the Johnson Library. The implementation of new designs and changes in scenery has resulted in reduced time taken by many test subjects to find their resources
Integrating Haptic Feedback into Mobile Location Based Services
Haptics is a feedback technology that takes advantage of the human sense of touch by
applying forces, vibrations, and/or motions to a haptic-enabled device such as a mobile
phone. Historically, human-computer interaction has been visual - text and images on
the screen. Haptic feedback can be an important additional method especially in Mobile
Location Based Services such as knowledge discovery, pedestrian navigation and notification
systems. A knowledge discovery system called the Haptic GeoWand is a low
interaction system that allows users to query geo-tagged data around them by using
a point-and-scan technique with their mobile device. Haptic Pedestrian is a navigation
system for walkers. Four prototypes have been developed classified according to
the userâs guidance requirements, the user type (based on spatial skills), and overall
system complexity. Haptic Transit is a notification system that provides spatial information
to the users of public transport. In all these systems, haptic feedback is used
to convey information about location, orientation, density and distance by use of the
vibration alarm with varying frequencies and patterns to help understand the physical
environment. Trials elicited positive responses from the users who see benefit in being
provided with a âheads upâ approach to mobile navigation. Results from a memory recall
test show that the users of haptic feedback for navigation had better memory recall
of the region traversed than the users of landmark images. Haptics integrated into a
multi-modal navigation system provides more usable, less distracting but more effective
interaction than conventional systems. Enhancements to the current work could include
integration of contextual information, detailed large-scale user trials and the exploration
of using haptics within confined indoor spaces
Human and Artificial Intelligence
Although tremendous advances have been made in recent years, many real-world problems still cannot be solved by machines alone. Hence, the integration between Human Intelligence and Artificial Intelligence is needed. However, several challenges make this integration complex. The aim of this Special Issue was to provide a large and varied collection of high-level contributions presenting novel approaches and solutions to address the above issues.
This Special Issue contains 14 papers (13 research papers and 1 review paper) that deal with various topics related to humanâmachine interactions and cooperation. Most of these works concern different aspects of recommender systems, which are among the most widespread decision support systems. The domains covered range from healthcare to movies and from biometrics to cultural heritage. However, there are also contributions on vocal assistants and smart interactive technologies.
In summary, each paper included in this Special Issue represents a step towards a future with humanâmachine interactions and cooperation. We hope the readers enjoy reading these articles and may find inspiration for their research activities
