On Cloud-based multisource Reliable Multicast Transport in Broadband Multimedia Satellite Networks
Multimedia synchronization, Software Over the Air, Personal Information Management on Cloud networks require new reliable protocols, which reduce the traffic load in the core and edge network. This work shows via simulations the performance of an efficient multicast file delivery, which advantage of the distributed file storage in Cloud computing. Towards video streaming in IoT environments: vehicular communication perspective
Multimedia oriented Internet of Things (IoT) enables pervasive and real-time communication of video, audio and image data among devices in an immediate surroundings. Today's vehicles have the capability of supporting real time multimedia acquisition. Vehicles with high illuminating infrared cameras and customized sensors can communicate with other on-road devices using dedicated short-range communication (DSRC) and 5G enabled communication technologies. Real time incidence of both urban and highway vehicular traffic environment can be captured and transmitted using vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication modes. Video streaming in vehicular IoT (VSV-IoT) environments is in growing stage with several challenges that need to be addressed ranging from limited resources in IoT devices, intermittent connection in vehicular networks, heterogeneous devices, dynamism and scalability in video encoding, bandwidth underutilization in video delivery, and attaining application-precise quality of service in video streaming. In this context, this paper presents a comprehensive review on video streaming in IoT environments focusing on vehicular communication perspective. Specifically, significance of video streaming in vehicular IoT environments is highlighted focusing on integration of vehicular communication with 5G enabled IoT technologies, and smart city oriented application areas for VSV-IoT. A taxonomy is presented for the classification of related literature on video streaming in vehicular network environments. Following the taxonomy, critical review of literature is performed focusing on major functional model, strengths and weaknesses. Metrics for video streaming in vehicular IoT environments are derived and comparatively analyzed in terms of their usage and evaluation capabilities. Open research challenges in VSV-IoT are identified as future directions of research in the area. The survey would benefit both IoT and vehicle industry practitioners and researchers, in terms of augmenting understanding of vehicular video streaming and its IoT related trends and issues
Scalable reliable on-demand media streaming protocols
This thesis considers the problem of delivering streaming media, on-demand, to potentially large numbers of concurrent clients. The problem has motivated the development in prior work of scalable protocols based on multicast or broadcast. However, previous protocols do not allow clients to efficiently: 1) recover from packet loss; 2) share bandwidth fairly with competing flows; or 3) maximize the playback quality at the client for any given client reception rate characteristics.
In this work, new protocols, namely Reliable Periodic Broadcast (RPB) and Reliable Bandwidth Skimming (RBS), are developed that efficiently recover from packet loss and achieve close to the best possible server bandwidth scalability for a given set of client characteristics. To share bandwidth fairly with competing traffic such as TCP, these protocols can employ the Vegas Multicast Rate Control (VMRC) protocol proposed in this work.
The VMRC protocol exhibits TCP Vegas-like behavior. In comparison to prior rate control protocols, VMRC provides less oscillatory reception rates to clients, and operates without inducing packet loss when the bottleneck link is lightly loaded. The VMRC protocol incorporates a new technique for dynamically adjusting the TCP Vegas threshold parameters based on measured characteristics of the network. This technique implements fair sharing of network resources with other types of competing flows, including widely deployed versions of TCP such as TCP Reno. This fair sharing is not possible with the previously defined static Vegas threshold parameters.
The RPB protocol is extended to efficiently support quality adaptation. The Optimized Heterogeneous Periodic Broadcast (HPB) is designed to support a range of client reception rates and efficiently support static quality adaptation by allowing clients to work-ahead before beginning playback to receive a media file of the desired quality. A dynamic quality adaptation technique is developed and evaluated which allows clients to achieve more uniform playback quality given time-varying client reception rates

Understanding the characteristics of Internet traffic and designing an efficient RaptorQ-based data transport protocol for modern data centres
This thesis is the amalgamation of research on efficient data transport protocols for data centres and a comprehensive and systematic study of Internet traffic, which came as a result of the need to understand traffic patterns and workloads in modern computer networks.
The first part of the thesis is on the development of efficient data transport pro- tocols for data centres. We study modern data transport protocols for data centres through large scale simulations using the OMNeT++ simulator. We developed and experimented with an OMNeT++ model of NDP. This has led to the identification of limitations of the state of the art and the formulation of research questions with respect to data transport protocols for modern data centres. The developed model includes an implementation of a Fat-tree topology and per-packet ECMP load bal- ancing. We discuss how we integrated the model with the INET Framework and validated it by running various experiments that test different model parameters and components. This work revealed limitations of NDP with respect to efficient one-to-many and many-to-one communication in data centres, which led to the de- velopment of SCDP, a novel and general-purpose data transport protocol for data centres that, in contrast to all other protocols proposed to date, natively supports one-to-many and many-to-one data communication, which is extremely common in modern data centres. SCDP does so without compromising on efficiency for short and long unicast flows. SCDP achieves this by integrating RaptorQ codes with receiver-driven data transport, in-network packet trimming and Multi-Level Feed- back Queuing (MLFQ); (1) RaptorQ codes enable efficient one-to-many and many- to-one data transport; (2) on top of RaptorQ codes, receiver- driven flow control, in combination with in-network packet trimming, enable efficient usage of network re- sources as well as multi-path transport and packet spraying for all transport modes. Incast and Outcast are eliminated; (3) the systematic nature of RaptorQ codes, in combination with MLFQ, enable fast, decoding-free completion of short flows. We extensively evaluated SCDP in a wide range of simulated scenarios with realistic data centre workloads. For one-to-many and many-to-one transport sessions, SCDP performs significantly better than NDP. For short and long unicast flows, SCDP performs equally well or better compared to NDP.
In the second part of the thesis, we extensively study Internet traffic. Getting good statistical models of traffic on network links is a well-known, often-studied problem. A lot of attention has been given to correlation patterns and flow duration. The distribution of the amount of traffic per unit time is an equally important but less studied problem. We study a large number of traffic traces from many different networks including academic, commercial and residential networks using state-of-the-art statistical techniques. We show that the log-normal distribution is a better fit than the Gaussian distribution. We also investigate a second, heavy- tailed distribution and show that its performance is better than Gaussian but worse than log-normal. We examine anomalous traces which are a poor fit for all tested distributions and show that this is often due to traffic outages or links that hit maximum capacity. Stationarity tests showed that the traffic is stationary at some range of aggregation times. We demonstrate the utility of the log-normal distribution in two contexts: predicting the proportion of time traffic will exceed a given level (for link capacity estimation) and predicting 95th percentile pricing. We also show the log-normal distribution is a better predictor than Gaussian orWeibull distributions
Ethernet Networks for Real-Time Use in the ATLAS Experiment
Ethernet became today's de-facto standard technology for local area networks. Defined by the IEEE 802.3 and 802.1 working groups, the Ethernet standards cover technologies deployed at the first two layers of the OSI protocol stack. The architecture of modern Ethernet networks is based on switches. The switches are devices usually built using a store-and-forward concept. At the highest level, they can be seen as a collection of queues and mathematically modelled by means of queuing theory. However, the traffic profiles on modern Ethernet networks are rather different from those assumed in classical queuing theory. The standard recommendations for evaluating the performance of network devices define the values that should be measured but do not specify a way of reconciling these values with the internal architecture of the switches. The introduction of the 10 Gigabit Ethernet standard provided a direct gateway from the LAN to the WAN by the means of the WAN PHY. Certain aspects related to the actual use of WAN PHY technology were vaguely defined by the standard. The ATLAS experiment at CERN is scheduled to start operation at CERN in 2007. The communication infrastructure of the Trigger and Data Acquisition System will be built using Ethernet networks. The real-time operational needs impose a requirement for predictable performance on the network part. In view of the diversity of the architectures of Ethernet devices, testing and modelling is required in order to make sure the full system will operate predictably. This thesis focuses on the testing part of the problem and addresses issues in determining the performance for both LAN and WAN connections. The problem of reconciling results from measurements to architectural details of the switches will also be tackled. We developed a scalable traffic generator system based on commercial-off-the-shelf Gigabit Ethernet network interface cards. The generator was able to transmit traffic at the nominal Gigabit Ethernet line rate for all frame sizes specified in the Ethernet standard. The calculation of latency was performed with accuracy in the range of +/- 200 ns. We indicate how certain features of switch architectures may be identified through accurate throughput and latency values measured for specific traffic distributions. At this stage, we present a detailed analysis of Ethernet broadcast support in modern switches. We use a similar hands-on approach to address the problem of extending Ethernet networks over long distances. Based on the 1 Gbit/s traffic generator used in the LAN, we develop a methodology to characterise point-to-point connections over long distance networks. At higher speeds, a combination of commercial traffic generators and high-end servers is employed to determine the performance of the connection. We demonstrate that the new 10 Gigabit Ethernet technology can interoperate with the installed base of SONET/SDH equipment through a series of experiments on point-to-point circuits deployed over long-distance network infrastructure in a multi-operator domain. In this process, we provide a holistic view of the end-to-end performance of 10 Gigabit Ethernet WAN PHY connections through a sequence of measurements starting at the physical transmission layer and continuing up to the transport layer of the OSI protocol stack
Controlling P2P File-Sharing Networks Traffic
Since the appearance of Peer-To-Peer (P2P) file-sharing networks some time ago, many
Internet users have chosen this technology to share and search programs, videos, music,
documents, etc. The total number of P2P file-sharing users has been increasing and
decreasing in the last decade depending on the creation or end of some well known P2P
file-sharing systems. P2P file-sharing networks traffic is currently overloading some data
networks and it is a major headache for network administrators because it is difficult to
control this kind of traffic (mainly because some P2P file-sharing networks encrypt their
messages). This paper deals with the analysis, taxonomy and characterization of eight Public
P2P file-sharing networks: Gnutella, Freeenet, Soulseek, BitTorrent, Opennap, eDonkey,
MP2P and FastTrack. These eight most popular networks have been selected due to their
different type of working architecture. Then, we will show the amount of users, files and the
size of files inside these file-sharing networks. Finally, several network configurations are

Traditionele Internetgebaseerde diensten voor het verspreiden van bestanden, zoals Web browsen en het versturen van e-mails, worden aangeboden via één centrale server. Meer recente netwerkdiensten zoals interactieve digitale televisie of video-op-aanvraag vereisen echter hoge kwaliteitsgaranties (QoS), zoals een lage en constante netwerkvertraging, en verbruiken een aanzienlijke hoeveelheid bandbreedte op het netwerk. Architecturen met één centrale server kunnen deze garanties moeilijk bieden en voldoen daarom niet meer aan de hoge eisen van de volgende generatie multimediatoepassingen. In dit onderzoek worden daarom nieuwe netwerkarchitecturen bestudeerd, die een dergelijke dienstkwaliteit kunnen ondersteunen. Zowel peer-to-peer mechanismes, zoals bij het uitwisselen van muziekbestanden tussen eindgebruikers, als servergebaseerde oplossingen, zoals gedistribueerde caches en content distributie netwerken (CDN's), komen aan bod. Afhankelijk van de bestudeerde dienst en de gebruikte netwerktechnologieën en -architectuur, worden gecentraliseerde algoritmen voor netwerkontwerp voorgesteld. Deze algoritmen optimaliseren de plaatsing van de servers of netwerkcaches en bepalen de nodige capaciteit van de servers en netwerklinks. De dynamische plaatsing van de aangeboden bestanden in de verschillende netwerkelementen wordt aangepast aan de heersende staat van het netwerk en aan de variërende aanvraagpatronen van de eindgebruikers. Interference-aware multipath video streaming in vehicular environments
The multipath transmission is one of the suitable transmission methods for high data rate oriented communication such as video streaming. Each video packets are split into smaller frames for parallel transmission via different paths. One path may interfere with another path due to these parallel transmissions. The multipath oriented interference is due to the route coupling which is one of the major challenges in vehicular traffic environments. The route coupling increases channel contention resulting in video packet collision. In this context, this paper proposes an Interference-aware Multipath Video Streaming (I-MVS) framework focusing on link and node disjoint optimal paths. Specifically, a multipath vehicular network model is derived. The model is utilized to develop interference-aware video streaming method considering angular driving statistics of vehicles. The quality of video streaming links is measured based on packet error rate considering non-circular transmission range oriented shadowing effects. Algorithms are developed as a complete operational I-MVS framework. The comparative performance evaluation attests the benefit of the proposed framework considering various video streaming related metrics
