    Get PDF
Fire is both beneficial to man and his environment as well as destructive and deadly among all the natural disasters. A fire Accident occurs very rarely, but once it crops up its consequences will be devastating. The early detection of fire will help to avoid further consequences and saves the life of people. During the fire accidents, it is also important to guide people within the building to exit safely. Because of this, the paper gives a review of literature related to recent advancements in building fire detection and emergency evacuation system. It is intended to provide details about fire simulation tools with features, suitable hardware, communication methods, and effective user interface

Cloud Computing can bring multiple benefits for Smart Cities. It permits the easy creation of centralized knowledge bases, thus straightforwardly enabling that multiple embedded systems (such as sensor or control devices) can have a collaborative, shared intelligence. In addition to this, thanks to its vast computing power, complex tasks can be done over low-spec devices just by offloading computation to the cloud, with the additional advantage of saving energy. In this work, cloud’s capabilities are exploited to implement and test a cloud-based surveillance system. Using a shared, 3D symbolic world model, different devices have a complete knowledge of all the elements, people and intruders in a certain open area or inside a building. The implementation of a volumetric, 3D, object-oriented, cloud-based world model (including semantic information) is novel as far as we know. Very simple devices (orange Pi) can send RGBD streams (using kinect cameras) to the cloud, where all the processing is distributed and done thanks to its inherent scalability. A proof-of-concept experiment is done in this paper in a testing lab with multiple cameras connected to the cloud with 802.11ac wireless technology. Our results show that this kind of surveillance system is possible currently, and that trends indicate that it can be improved at a short term to produce high performance vigilance system using low-speed devices. In addition, this proof-of-concept claims that many interesting opportunities and challenges arise, for example, when mobile watch robots and fixed cameras would act as a team for carrying out complex collaborative surveillance strategies.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TEC2016-77785-PJunta de Andalucía P12-TIC-130

The Intelligent Home Automation System (IHAS) is usually a cell phone web-based application that enables end users in order to keep track of in addition to manage home/office appliance using their mobile system. The main objective of this system is developed to facilitate home users, especially domestic electrical appliances with simple controls. In addition, it can save the cost of electricity for lighting can be controlled to suit the user. Generally, most home appliances controlled from a distance using a remote control. Has created a system for controlling home lighting from a certain distance, which replaces the remote control using mobile smartphone. To make the smartphone to function as a remote control, an application was developed using Android technology. App Inventor software used for designing applications intended. Hardware microcontroller Arduino UNO R3 which is used to connect the smartphone to the electrical equipment. The system has been tested by developing a mini model and take into account the situation in the domestic home. The test is based on the level of control for wirelessly using Bluetooth and the distance between the lamp and the smartphone. The results of this test, the system can be used on equipment or other home appliances for the purpose of controlling or adjustment. In addition, the security system was also highlighted in a typical system, using the global system for mobile (GSM), it can be warned and notified to the consumer where there is a gas leak or the presence of a person in the vicinity of the residence

The developments of the internet of things (IoT) technologies fascinated the universe and provided great opportunities to introduce these innovations in smart house networks. Smart home automation is highly required these days. Smart home automation is a collection of electronic devices connected to monitor and control in the market home appliance remotely. However, it is still needed to design a friendly and reliable system since the system mainly depends on the devices used and the environment of the network. NETPI and BLYNK are IoT frameworks used for hardware-agnostic with smartphones, websites, private clouds, system security, data mining, and deep learning. The results confirmed that NETPI provides flexibility to deal with several NODEMCU controllers in a single control framework. The proposed system shows its applicability in monitoring and controlling home appliances remotely

Home security has been a major national issue as crimes remain rampant in our society and it is now becoming uncontrollable. In the past all measures used seems not to be very effective, therefore, people want to take preventive measures to curb this menace and protect their homes  by using modern day technology. This system is GSM based which uses wireless technology to revolutionize the security system and standard of living. This paper therefore, focuses on the home security vis-à-vis controlling the home appliances remotely while the owner is away. This system provides ideal solution to the problems faced by home owners in daily life. Since it is a wireless device, it is therefore more adaptable and cost effective. Fire can be made useful for various purposes. However, uncontrollable fire may result in property damage and human death. The major factor of fire deaths is due to excessive smoke inhalation. Therefore, early detection of fire is crucial in fire detection systems. The conventional fire detection system does not come with a false alarm prevention system. Besides, the system is unable to tell the exact location of the fire. In this project, an Internet of Things (IoT) based fire safety system is developed to overcome these problems. The proposed system consists of three major parts which are the detector, processing unit and surveillance. The detector unit is an integration of ESP32, carbon monoxide sensor, ionization smoke detector, buzzer, temperature and humidity sensor. As the processing unit, Raspberry Pi is used to run the Node-RED application, which processes the data and performs monitoring. The communication between the detector and processing unit is based on the Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol. A surveillance unit is where a camera is installed to monitor the condition of the surrounding. The response of the system is based upon the sensor’s values or the user’s response.  Once the fire breakout is confirmed, the system will immediately sound the alarm, and Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates and floor plan of the accommodation will send to the nearby fire station. The floor plan is developed to track the exact location of the fire. Experiments are carried out on the proposed fire safety system, and encouraging results are produced

Neural network and genetic algorithm techniques for energy efficient relay node placement in smart grid

Smart grid (SG) is an intelligent combination of computer science and electricity system whose main characteristics are measurement and real-time monitoring for utility and consumer behavior. SG is made of three main parts: Home Area Network (HAN), Field Area Network (FAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN). There are several techniques used for monitoring SG such as fiber optic but very costly and difficult to maintain. One of the ways to solve the monitoring problem is use of Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). WSN is widely researched because of its easy deployment, low maintenance requirements, small hardware and low costs. However, SG is a harsh environment with high level of magnetic field and background noise and deploying WSN in this area is challenging since it has a direct effect on WSN link quality. An optimal relay node placement which has not yet worked in a smart grid can improve the link quality significantly. To solve the link quality problem and achieve optimum relay node placement, network life-time must be calculated because a longer life-time indicates better relay placement. To calculate this life-time, it is necessary to estimate packet reception rate (PRR). In this research, to achieve optimal relay node placement, firstly, a mathematical formula to measure link quality of the network in smart grid environment is proposed. Secondly, an algorithm based on neural network to estimate the network life-time has been developed. Thirdly, an algorithm based on genetic algorithm for efcient positioning of relay nodes under different conditions to increase the life-time of neural network has also been developed. Results from simulation showed that life-time prediction of neural network has a 91% accuracy. In addition, there was an 85% improvement of life-time compared to binary integer linear programming and weight binary integer linear programming. The research has shown that relay node placement based on the developed genetic algorithms have increased the network life-time, addressed the link quality problem and achieved optimum relay node placement
