Creativity and Autonomy in Swarm Intelligence Systems
This work introduces two swarm intelligence algorithms -- one mimicking the behaviour of one species of ants (\emph{Leptothorax acervorum}) foraging (a `Stochastic Diffusion Search', SDS) and the other algorithm mimicking the behaviour of birds flocking (a `Particle Swarm Optimiser', PSO) -- and outlines a novel integration strategy exploiting the local search properties of the PSO with global SDS behaviour. The resulting hybrid algorithm is used to sketch novel drawings of an input image, exploliting an artistic tension between the local behaviour of the `birds flocking' - as they seek to follow the input sketch - and the global behaviour of the `ants foraging' - as they seek to encourage the flock to explore novel regions of the canvas. The paper concludes by exploring the putative `creativity' of this hybrid swarm system in the philosophical light of the `rhizome' and Deleuze's well known `Orchid and Wasp' metaphor
Multi-objective discrete particle swarm optimisation algorithm for integrated assembly sequence planning and assembly line balancing
In assembly optimisation, assembly sequence planning and assembly line balancing have been extensively studied because both activities are directly linked with assembly efficiency that influences the final assembly costs. Both activities are categorised as NP-hard and usually performed separately. Assembly sequence planning and assembly line balancing optimisation presents a good opportunity to be integrated, considering the benefits such as larger search space that leads to better solution quality, reduces error rate in planning and speeds up time-to-market for a product. In order to optimise an integrated assembly sequence planning and assembly line balancing, this work proposes a multi-objective discrete particle swarm optimisation algorithm that used discrete procedures to update its position and velocity in finding Pareto optimal solution. A computational experiment with 51 test problems at different difficulty levels was used to test the multi-objective discrete particle swarm optimisation performance compared with the existing algorithms. A statistical test of the algorithm performance indicates that the proposed multi-objective discrete particle swarm optimisation algorithm presents significant improvement in terms of the quality of the solution set towards the Pareto optimal set
Parameter Optimisation of a Virtual Synchronous Machine in a Microgrid
Parameters of a virtual synchronous machine in a small microgrid are
optimised. The dynamical behaviour of the system is simulated after a
perturbation, where the system needs to return to its steady state. The cost
functional evaluates the system behaviour for different parameters. This
functional is minimised by Parallel Tempering. Two perturbation scenarios are
investigated and the resulting optimal parameters agree with analytical
predictions. Dependent on the focus of the optimisation different optima are
obtained for each perturbation scenario. During the transient the system leaves
the allowed voltage and frequency bands only for a short time if the
perturbation is within a certain range.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figure
Social interaction as a heuristic for combinatorial optimization problems
We investigate the performance of a variant of Axelrod's model for
dissemination of culture - the Adaptive Culture Heuristic (ACH) - on solving an
NP-Complete optimization problem, namely, the classification of binary input
patterns of size by a Boolean Binary Perceptron. In this heuristic,
agents, characterized by binary strings of length which represent possible
solutions to the optimization problem, are fixed at the sites of a square
lattice and interact with their nearest neighbors only. The interactions are
such that the agents' strings (or cultures) become more similar to the low-cost
strings of their neighbors resulting in the dissemination of these strings
across the lattice. Eventually the dynamics freezes into a homogeneous
absorbing configuration in which all agents exhibit identical solutions to the
optimization problem. We find through extensive simulations that the
probability of finding the optimal solution is a function of the reduced
variable so that the number of agents must increase with the fourth
power of the problem size, , to guarantee a fixed probability
of success. In this case, we find that the relaxation time to reach an
absorbing configuration scales with which can be interpreted as the
overall computational cost of the ACH to find an optimal set of weights for a
Boolean Binary Perceptron, given a fixed probability of success
Creative or Not? Birds and Ants Draw with Muscle
In this work, a novel approach of merging two swarm intelligence algorithms is considered â one mimicking the behaviour of ants foraging (Stochastic Diffusion Search [5]) and the other algorithm simulating the behaviour of birds flocking (Particle Swarm Optimisation [17]). This hybrid algorithm is assisted by a mechanism inspired from the behaviour of skeletal muscles activated by motor neurons. The operation of the swarm intelligence algorithms is first introduced via metaphor before the new hybrid algorithm is defined. Next, the novel behaviour of the hybrid algorithm is reflected through a cooperative attempt to make a drawing, followed by a discussion about creativity in general and the âcomputational creativityâ of the swarm
Stigmergic epistemology, stigmergic cognition
To know is to cognize, to cognize is to be a culturally bounded, rationality-bounded and environmentally located agent. Knowledge and cognition are thus dual aspects of human sociality. If social epistemology has the formation, acquisition, mediation, transmission and dissemination of knowledge in complex communities of knowers as its subject matter, then its third party character is essentially stigmergic. In its most generic formulation, stigmergy is the phenomenon of indirect communication mediated by modiďŹcations of the environment. Extending this notion one might conceive of social stigmergy as the extra-cranial analog of an artiďŹcial neural network providing epistemic structure. This paper recommends a stigmergic framework for social epistemology to account for the supposed tension between individual action, wants and beliefs and the social corpora. We also propose that the so-called "extended mind" thesis oďŹers the requisite stigmergic cognitive analog to stigmergic knowledge. Stigmergy as a theory of interaction within complex systems theory is illustrated through an example that runs on a particle swarm optimization algorithm
Facility layout problem: Bibliometric and benchmarking analysis
Facility layout problem is related to the location of departments in a facility area, with the aim of determining the most effective configuration. Researches based on different approaches have been published in the last six decades and, to prove the effectiveness of the results obtained, several instances have been developed. This paper presents a general overview on the extant literature on facility layout problems in order to identify the main research trends and propose future research questions. Firstly, in order to give the reader an overview of the literature, a bibliometric analysis is presented. Then, a clusterization of the papers referred to the main instances reported in literature was carried out in order to create a database that can be a useful tool in the benchmarking procedure for researchers that would approach this kind of problems
Comparative Studies on Decentralized Multiloop PID Controller Design Using Evolutionary Algorithms
Decentralized PID controllers have been designed in this paper for
simultaneous tracking of individual process variables in multivariable systems
under step reference input. The controller design framework takes into account
the minimization of a weighted sum of Integral of Time multiplied Squared Error
(ITSE) and Integral of Squared Controller Output (ISCO) so as to balance the
overall tracking errors for the process variables and required variation in the
corresponding manipulated variables. Decentralized PID gains are tuned using
three popular Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) viz. Genetic Algorithm (GA),
Evolutionary Strategy (ES) and Cultural Algorithm (CA). Credible simulation
comparisons have been reported for four benchmark 2x2 multivariable processes.Comment: 6 pages, 9 figure
