    Three-bit representation of three-dimensional range data

    Our previous research has shown that 3D range data sizes can be substantially reduced if they are converted into regular 2D images using the Holoimage technique. Yet, this technique requires all 24 bits of a standard image to represent one 3D point, making it impossible for a regular 2D image to carry 2D texture information as well. This paper proposes an approach to represent 3D range data with 3 bits, further reducing the data size. We demonstrate that more than an 8.2∶1compression ratio can be achieved with compression root-mean-square error of only 0.34%. Moreover, we can use another bit to represent a black-and-white 2D texture, and thus both 3D data and 2D texture images can be stored into an 8 bit grayscale image. Both simulation and experiments are presented to verify the performance of the proposed technique

In order to establish the background and lay down terminology, fundamental concepts of color perception and measurement are first presented us-ing vector-space notation and terminology. Present-day color recording and reproduction systems are reviewed along with the common mathematical models used for representing these devices. Algorithms for processing color images for display and communication are surveyed, and a forecast of research trends is attempted. An extensive bibliography is provided

    New methods for digital halftoning and inverse halftoning

    Halftoning is the rendition of continuous-tone pictures on bi-level displays. Here we first review some of the halftoning algorithms which have a direct bearing on our paper and then describe some of the more recent advances in the field. Dot diffusion halftoning has the advantage of pixel-level parallelism, unlike the popular error diffusion halftoning method. We first review the dot diffusion algorithm and describe a recent method to improve its image quality by taking advantage of the Human Visual System function. Then we discuss the inverse halftoning problem: The reconstruction of a continuous tone image from its halftone. We briefly review the methods for inverse halftoning, and discuss the advantages of a recent algorithm, namely, the Look Up Table (LUT)Method. This method is extremely fast and achieves image quality comparable to that of the best known methods. It can be applied to any halftoning scheme. We then introduce LUT based halftoning and tree-structured LUT (TLUT)halftoning. We demonstrate how halftone image quality in between that of error diffusion and Direct Binary Search (DBS)can be achieved depending on the size of tree structure in TLUT algorithm while keeping the complexity of the algorithm much lower than that of DBS

    Detail and contrast enhancement in images using dithering and fusion

    This thesis focuses on two applications of wavelet transforms to achieve image enhancement. One of the applications is image fusion and the other one is image dithering. Firstly, to improve the quality of a fused image, an image fusion technique based on transform domain has been proposed as a part of this research. The proposed fusion technique has also been extended to reduce temporal redundancy associated with the processing. Experimental results show better performance of the proposed methods over other methods. In addition, achievements have been made in terms of enhancing image contrast, capturing more image details and efficiency in processing time when compared to existing methods. Secondly, of all the present image dithering methods, error diffusion-based dithering is the most widely used and explored. Error diffusion, despite its great success, has been lacking in image enhancement aspects because of the softening effects caused by this method. To compensate for the softening effects, wavelet-based dithering was introduced. Although wavelet-based dithering worked well in removing the softening effects, as the method is based on discrete wavelet transform, it lacked in aspects like poor directionality and shift invariance, which are responsible for making the resultant images look sharp and crisp. Hence, a new method named complex wavelet-based dithering has been introduced as part of this research to compensate for the softening effects. Image processed by the proposed method emphasises more on details and exhibits better contrast characteristics in comparison to the existing methods
