Semantics-Space-Time Cube. A Conceptual Framework for Systematic Analysis of Texts in Space and Time
We propose an approach to analyzing data in which texts are associated with spatial and temporal references with the aim to understand how the text semantics vary over space and time. To represent the semantics, we apply probabilistic topic modeling. After extracting a set of topics and representing the texts by vectors of topic weights, we aggregate the data into a data cube with the dimensions corresponding to the set of topics, the set of spatial locations (e.g., regions), and the time divided into suitable intervals according to the scale of the planned analysis. Each cube cell corresponds to a combination (topic, location, time interval) and contains aggregate measures characterizing the subset of the texts concerning this topic and having the spatial and temporal references within these location and interval. Based on this structure, we systematically describe the space of analysis tasks on exploring the interrelationships among the three heterogeneous information facets, semantics, space, and time. We introduce the operations of projecting and slicing the cube, which are used to decompose complex tasks into simpler subtasks. We then present a design of a visual analytics system intended to support these subtasks. To reduce the complexity of the user interface, we apply the principles of structural, visual, and operational uniformity while respecting the specific properties of each facet. The aggregated data are represented in three parallel views corresponding to the three facets and providing different complementary perspectives on the data. The views have similar look-and-feel to the extent allowed by the facet specifics. Uniform interactive operations applicable to any view support establishing links between the facets. The uniformity principle is also applied in supporting the projecting and slicing operations on the data cube. We evaluate the feasibility and utility of the approach by applying it in two analysis scenarios using geolocated social media data for studying people's reactions to social and natural events of different spatial and temporal scales
Entrograms and coarse graining of dynamics on complex networks
Using an information theoretic point of view, we investigate how a dynamics
acting on a network can be coarse grained through the use of graph partitions.
Specifically, we are interested in how aggregating the state space of a Markov
process according to a partition impacts on the thus obtained lower-dimensional
dynamics. We highlight that for a dynamics on a particular graph there may be
multiple coarse grained descriptions that capture different, incomparable
features of the original process. For instance, a coarse graining induced by
one partition may be commensurate with a time-scale separation in the dynamics,
while another coarse graining may correspond to a different lower-dimensional
dynamics that preserves the Markov property of the original process. Taking
inspiration from the literature of Computational Mechanics, we find that a
convenient tool to summarise and visualise such dynamical properties of a
coarse grained model (partition) is the entrogram. The entrogram gathers
certain information-theoretic measures, which quantify how information flows
across time steps. These information theoretic quantities include the entropy
rate, as well as a measure for the memory contained in the process, i.e., how
well the dynamics can be approximated by a first order Markov process. We use
the entrogram to investigate how specific macro-scale connection patterns in
the state-space transition graph of the original dynamics result in desirable
properties of coarse grained descriptions. We thereby provide a fresh
perspective on the interplay between structure and dynamics in networks, and
the process of partitioning from an information theoretic perspective. We focus
on networks that may be approximated by both a core-periphery or a clustered
organization, and highlight that each of these coarse grained descriptions can
capture different aspects of a Markov process acting on the network.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figue
Power, Techno-economics, and Transatlantic Relations in 1987-1999
This essay suggests that in 1987-1999 European elites, in their efforts of asymmetric balancing against the United States hegemony, decided to trade-off military capability for economic competitiveness. Thus, it documents a correlation between a) the reluctance of especially France and Germany during the 1990s to fully embrace and pursue the US-led RMA; and, b) the European Union's efforts since the late 1980s to challenge America's technological and economic supremacy in the aerospace sector. Two projects (Airbus and Galileo) indicate that the quest for strategic independence and the fear of reduced influence in international affairs were the driving forces behind European efforts to challenge the US commercial and technological supremacy in the aerospace sector in 1987-99. Furthermore, the article tries to identify what role the RMA played in this context (focusing in particular on Germany and France). It argues also that since the late 1980s (and especially during the 1990s), the European Commission and countries such as France and Germany perceived US policies in high-technology sectors (accentuated also by vigorous pursuit of the RMA) as limiting Europe’s abilities to advance its own agenda in international economic and security affairs
The Use of Mobile Social Technology as Transitional Objects Impact on Personality Functioning
The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the impact unlimited connectivity and unlimited access to voice, text, and video communication as well as multimedia content consumption through mobile social technology has on personality integration. The increased use of mobile social technology has changed how the user engages social relationships. Through mobile social technology, the user places importance in an inanimate object for engagement of social relationships. A reliance on the inanimate object as a social relationship is thought to compromise the ability to internalize integrated object relations and develop stable personality organization. This theoretical research uses hermeneutic analysis of Kernberg’s Object Relations theory, Winnicott’s theory on Transitional Objects, Anthropomorphism, and Kohut’s Self Psychology as it pertains to the relationship with mobile social technology. Through the hermeneutic process of understanding the presented experience of each of these theories the aim is to form a clearer picture of how our relationship with mobile social technology impacts personality functioning. Further research is needed to continue to expand our understanding of the impact of our relationship with social technologies. Recent Advances in Transfer Learning for Cross-Dataset Visual Recognition: A Problem-Oriented Perspective
This paper takes a problem-oriented perspective and presents a comprehensive
review of transfer learning methods, both shallow and deep, for cross-dataset
visual recognition. Specifically, it categorises the cross-dataset recognition
into seventeen problems based on a set of carefully chosen data and label
attributes. Such a problem-oriented taxonomy has allowed us to examine how
different transfer learning approaches tackle each problem and how well each
problem has been researched to date. The comprehensive problem-oriented review
of the advances in transfer learning with respect to the problem has not only
revealed the challenges in transfer learning for visual recognition, but also
the problems (e.g. eight of the seventeen problems) that have been scarcely
studied. This survey not only presents an up-to-date technical review for
researchers, but also a systematic approach and a reference for a machine
learning practitioner to categorise a real problem and to look up for a
possible solution accordingly
Visual analysis of document triage data
As part of the information seeking process, a large amount of effort is invested in order to study and understand how information seekers search through documents such that they can assess their relevance. This search and assessment of document relevance, known as document triage, is an important information seeking process, but is not yet well understood. Human-computer interaction (HCI) and digital library scientists have undertaken a series of user studies involving information seeking, collected a large amount of data describing information seekers' behavior during document search. Next to this, we have witnessed a rapid increase in the number of off-the-shelf visualization tools which can benefit document triage study. Here we set out to utilize existing information visualization techniques and tools in order to gain a better understanding of the large amount of user-study data collected by HCI and digital library researchers. We describe the range of available tools and visualizations we use in order to increase our knowledge of document triage. Treemap, parallel coordinates, stack graph, matrix chart, as well as other visualization methods, prove to be insightful in exploring, analyzing and presenting user behavior during document triage.
