    Contrastive Label Disambiguation for Self-Supervised Terrain Traversability Learning in Off-Road Environments

    Discriminating the traversability of terrains is a crucial task for autonomous driving in off-road environments. However, it is challenging due to the diverse, ambiguous, and platform-specific nature of off-road traversability. In this paper, we propose a novel self-supervised terrain traversability learning framework, utilizing a contrastive label disambiguation mechanism. Firstly, weakly labeled training samples with pseudo labels are automatically generated by projecting actual driving experiences onto the terrain models constructed in real time. Subsequently, a prototype-based contrastive representation learning method is designed to learn distinguishable embeddings, facilitating the self-supervised updating of those pseudo labels. As the iterative interaction between representation learning and pseudo label updating, the ambiguities in those pseudo labels are gradually eliminated, enabling the learning of platform-specific and task-specific traversability without any human-provided annotations. Experimental results on the RELLIS-3D dataset and our Gobi Desert driving dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figure

    A Cross-Season Correspondence Dataset for Robust Semantic Segmentation

    In this paper, we present a method to utilize 2D-2D point matches between images taken during different image conditions to train a convolutional neural network for semantic segmentation. Enforcing label consistency across the matches makes the final segmentation algorithm robust to seasonal changes. We describe how these 2D-2D matches can be generated with little human interaction by geometrically matching points from 3D models built from images. Two cross-season correspondence datasets are created providing 2D-2D matches across seasonal changes as well as from day to night. The datasets are made publicly available to facilitate further research. We show that adding the correspondences as extra supervision during training improves the segmentation performance of the convolutional neural network, making it more robust to seasonal changes and weather conditions.Comment: In Proc.     Study of Mobile Robot Operations Related to Lunar Exploration

    Mobile robots extend the reach of exploration in environments unsuitable, or unreachable, by humans. Far-reaching environments, such as the south lunar pole, exhibit lighting conditions that are challenging for optical imagery required for mobile robot navigation. Terrain conditions also impact the operation of mobile robots; distinguishing terrain types prior to physical contact can improve hazard avoidance. This thesis presents the conclusions of a trade-off that uses the results from two studies related to operating mobile robots at the lunar south pole. The lunar south pole presents engineering design challenges for both tele-operation and lidar-based autonomous navigation in the context of a near-term, low-cost, short-duration lunar prospecting mission. The conclusion is that direct-drive tele-operation may result in improved science data return. The first study is on demonstrating lidar reflectance intensity, and near-infrared spectroscopy, can improve terrain classification over optical imagery alone. Two classification techniques, Naive Bayes and multi-class SVM, were compared for classification errors. Eight terrain types, including aggregate, loose sand and compacted sand, are classified using wavelet-transformed optical images, and statistical values of lidar reflectance intensity. The addition of lidar reflectance intensity was shown to reduce classification errors for both classifiers. Four types of aggregate material are classified using statistical values of spectral reflectance. The addition of spectral reflectance was shown to reduce classification errors for both classifiers. The second study is on human performance in tele-operating a mobile robot over time-delay and in lighting conditions analogous to the south lunar pole. Round-trip time delay between operator and mobile robot leads to an increase in time to turn the mobile robot around obstacles or corners as operators tend to implement a `wait and see\u27 approach. A study on completion time for a cornering task through varying corridor widths shows that time-delayed performance fits a previously established cornering law, and that varying lighting conditions did not adversely affect human performance. The results of the cornering law are interpreted to quantify the additional time required to negotiate a corner under differing conditions, and this increase in time can be interpreted to be predictive when operating a mobile robot through a driving circuit

    TrackletMapper: Ground Surface Segmentation and Mapping from Traffic Participant Trajectories

    Robustly classifying ground infrastructure such as roads and street crossings is an essential task for mobile robots operating alongside pedestrians. While many semantic segmentation datasets are available for autonomous vehicles, models trained on such datasets exhibit a large domain gap when deployed on robots operating in pedestrian spaces. Manually annotating images recorded from pedestrian viewpoints is both expensive and time-consuming. To overcome this challenge, we propose TrackletMapper, a framework for annotating ground surface types such as sidewalks, roads, and street crossings from object tracklets without requiring human-annotated data. To this end, we project the robot ego-trajectory and the paths of other traffic participants into the ego-view camera images, creating sparse semantic annotations for multiple types of ground surfaces from which a ground segmentation model can be trained. We further show that the model can be self-distilled for additional performance benefits by aggregating a ground surface map and projecting it into the camera images, creating a denser set of training annotations compared to the sparse tracklet annotations. We qualitatively and quantitatively attest our findings on a novel large-scale dataset for mobile robots operating in pedestrian areas.     A Comparison of RBF Neural Network Training Algorithms for Inertial Sensor Based Terrain Classification

    This paper introduces a comparison of training algorithms of radial basis function (RBF) neural networks for classification purposes. RBF networks provide effective solutions in many science and engineering fields. They are especially popular in the pattern classification and signal processing areas. Several algorithms have been proposed for training RBF networks. The Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm is a new, very simple and robust population based optimization algorithm that is inspired by the intelligent behavior of honey bee swarms. The training performance of the ABC algorithm is compared with the Genetic algorithm, Kalman filtering algorithm and gradient descent algorithm. In the experiments, not only well known classification problems from the UCI repository such as the Iris, Wine and Glass datasets have been used, but also an experimental setup is designed and inertial sensor based terrain classification for autonomous ground vehicles was also achieved. Experimental results show that the use of the ABC algorithm results in better learning than those of others

    A comprehensive survey of unmanned ground vehicle terrain traversability for unstructured environments and sensor technology insights

    This article provides a detailed analysis of the assessment of unmanned ground vehicle terrain traversability. The analysis is categorized into terrain classification, terrain mapping, and cost-based traversability, with subcategories of appearance-based, geometry-based, and mixed-based methods. The article also explores the use of machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL) and reinforcement learning (RL) and other based end-to-end methods as crucial components for advanced terrain traversability analysis. The investigation indicates that a mixed approach, incorporating both exteroceptive and proprioceptive sensors, is more effective, optimized, and reliable for traversability analysis. Additionally, the article discusses the vehicle platforms and sensor technologies used in traversability analysis, making it a valuable resource for researchers in the field. Overall, this paper contributes significantly to the current understanding of traversability analysis in unstructured environments and provides insights for future sensor-based research on advanced traversability analysis

    Mavora : development of a planning process for reconciliation of interests in wilderness

Geographically, the Mavora is intermediate between an acknowledged zone of preservation and a zone of land development. Historically it represents a zone of interaction between different agency interests, notably those of the New Zealand Forest Service and those of both the nature conservation and pastoral administration and development arms of the Department of Lands and Survey. Extensive pastoralism as private enterprise has yielded ground in the district to pastoral development and farm settlement. The limits to this process have tended to be set by progressive experience on the land available for farm settlement. A working plan had been drafted for the adjacent Snowdon Forest. More active management planning for lands administered separately by these two major central government agencies served to bring into sharper contrast any differences between such development proposals if they remained ineffectively co-ordinated. Meanwhile the long-valued fishery resource of the Mavora Lakes and the Mararoa River has itself commanded greater attention because of increased use by anglers and the improved road access to the area which has itself increased boating and other shoreline recreation. While discharge from the lakes in the Mararoa River is being directed down-stream into Manapouri for power production, some thought has been given to using it in part to augment the summer low flows of the Oreti to Invercargill. Different communities of interest show varying degrees of support and aversion for the different kinds of resource use outlined above. Decisions are needed to determine the optimal use of resources before any further development which may irreversibly change the resources and their character

    Terrain Classification from Body-mounted Cameras during Human Locomotion

    Abstract—This paper presents a novel algorithm for terrain type classification based on monocular video captured from the viewpoint of human locomotion. A texture-based algorithm is developed to classify the path ahead into multiple groups that can be used to support terrain classification. Gait is taken into account in two ways. Firstly, for key frame selection, when regions with homogeneous texture characteristics are updated, the fre-quency variations of the textured surface are analysed and used to adaptively define filter coefficients. Secondly, it is incorporated in the parameter estimation process where probabilities of path consistency are employed to improve terrain-type estimation. When tested with multiple classes that directly affect mobility a hard surface, a soft surface and an unwalkable area- our proposed method outperforms existing methods by up to 16%, and also provides improved robustness.
