    The TerraSAR-X Mission and System Design

    This paper describes the TerraSAR-X Mission Concept within the context of a public-private-partnership (PPP) agreement between the German Aerospace Center DLR and industry. It briefly describes the PPP-concept as well as the overall project organization. The paper then gives an overview of the satellite design, the corresponding Ground Segment as well as the main mission parameters. After a short introduction to the scientific and commercial exploitation scheme, the paper finally focuses on the mission accomplishments achieved so far during the ongoing mission

    High resolution radargrammetry with COSMO-SkyMed, TerraSAR-X and RADARSAT-2 imagery: development and implementation of an image orientation model for Digital Surface Model generation

    Digital Surface and Terrain Models (DSM/DTM) have large relevance in several territorial applications, such as topographic mapping, monitoring engineering, geology, security, land planning and management of Earth's resources. The satellite remote sensing data offer the opportunity to have continuous observation of Earth's surface for territorial application, with short acquisition and revisit times. Meeting these requirements, the SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) high resolution satellite imagery could offer night-and-day and all-weather functionality (clouds, haze and rain penetration). Two different methods may be used in order to generate DSMs from SAR data: the interferometric and the radargrammetric approaches. The radargrammetry uses only the intensity information of the SAR images and reconstructs the 3D information starting from a couple of images similarly to photogrammetry. Radargrammetric DSM extraction procedure consists of two basic steps: the stereo pair orientation and the image matching for the automatic detection of homologous points. The goal of this work is the definition and the implementation of a geometric model in order to orientate SAR imagery in zero Doppler geometry. The radargrammetric model implemented in SISAR (Software per Immagini Satellitari ad Alta Risoluzione - developed at the Geodesy and Geomatic Division - University of Rome "La Sapienza") is based on the equation of radar target acquisition and zero Doppler focalization Moreover a tool for the SAR Rational Polynomial Coefficients (RPCs) generation has been implemented in SISAR software, similarly to the one already developed for the optical sensors. The possibility to generate SAR RPCs starting from a radargrammetric model sounds of particular interest since, at present, the most part of SAR imagery is not supplied with RPCs, although the RPFs model is available in several commercial software. Only RADARSAT-2 data are supplied with vendors RPCs. To test the effectiveness of the implemented RPCs generation tool and the SISAR radargrammetric orientation model the reference results were computed: the stereo pairs were orientated with the two model. The tests were carried out on several test site using COSMO-SkyMed, TerraSAR-X and RADARSAT-2 data. Moreover, to evaluate the advantages and the different accuracy between the orientation models computed without GCPs and the orientation model with GCPs a Monte Carlo test was computed. At last, to define the real effectiveness of radargrammetric technique for DSM extraction and to compare the radrgrammetric tool implemented in a commercial software PCI-Geomatica v. 2012 and SISAR software, the images acquired on Beauport test site were used for DSM extraction. It is important underline that several test were computed. Part of this tests were carried out under the supervision of Prof. Thierry Toutin at CCRS (Canada Centre of Remote Sensing) where the PCI-Geomatica orientation model was developed, in order to check the better parameters solution to extract radargrammetric DSMs. In conclusion, the results obtained are representative of the geometric potentialities of SAR stereo pairs as regards 3D surface reconstruction

    A High-Order Imaging Algorithm for High-Resolution Space-Borne SAR Based on a Modified Equivalent Squint Range Model

    Two challenges have been faced in signal processing of ultrahigh-resolution spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR). The first challenge is constructing a precise range model, and the second one is to develop an efficient imaging algorithm since traditional algorithms fail to process ultrahigh-resolution spaceborne SAR data effectively. In this paper, a novel high-order imaging algorithm for high-resolution spaceborne SAR is presented. First, a modified equivalent squint range model (MESRM) is developed by introducing equivalent radar acceleration into the equivalent squint range model, and it is more suitable for high-resolution spaceborne SAR. The signal model based on the MESRM is also presented. Second, a novel high-order imaging algorithm is derived. The insufficient pulse-repetition frequency problem is solved by an improved subaperture method, and accurate focusing is achieved through an extended hybrid correlation algorithm. Simulations are performed to validate the presented algorithm

    High-Temporal-Resolution High-Spatial-Resolution Spaceborne SAR Based on Continuously Varying PRF

    Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is a well-established and powerful imaging technique for acquiring high-spatial-resolution images of the Earth's surface. With the development of beam steering techniques, sliding spotlight and staring spotlight modes have been employed to support high-spatial-resolution applications. In addition to this strengthened high-spatial-resolution and wide-swath capability, high-temporal-resolution (short repeat-observation interval) represents a key capability for numerous applications. However, conventional SAR systems are limited in that the same patch can only be illuminated for several seconds within a single pass. This paper considers a novel high-squint-angle system intended to acquire high-spatial-resolution spaceborne SAR images with repeat-observation intervals varying from tens of seconds to several minutes within a single pass. However, an exponentially increased range cell migration would arise and lead to a conflict between the receive window and 'blind ranges'. An efficient data acquisition technique for high-temporal-resolution, high-spatial-resolution and high-squint-angle spaceborne SAR, in which the pulse repetition frequency (PRF) is continuously varied according to the changing slant range, is presented in this paper. This technique allows echo data to remain in the receive window instead of conflicting with the transmitted pulse or nadir echo. Considering the precision of hardware, a compromise and practical strategy is also proposed. Furthermore, a detailed performance analysis of range ambiguities is provided with respect to parameters of TerraSAR-X. For strong point-like targets, the range ambiguity of this technique would be better than that of uniform PRF technique. For this innovative technique, a resampling strategy and modified imaging algorithm have been developed to handle the non-uniformly sampled echo data. Simulations are performed to validate the efficiency of the proposed technique and the associated imaging algorithm

    Moving Target Azimuth Velocity Estimation for the MASA Mode Based on Sequential SAR Images

    A novel azimuth velocity estimation method is proposed based on the multiple azimuth squint angles (MASA) imaging mode, acquiring sequential synthetic aperture radar images with different squint angles and time lags. The MASA mode acquisition geometry is given first, and the effect of target motion on azimuth offset and slant range offset is discussed in detail. Then, the azimuth velocity estimation accuracy is analyzed, considering the errors caused by registration, defocusing, and range velocity. Moreover, the interaction between target azimuth velocity and range velocity is studied for a better understanding of the azimuth velocity estimation error caused by the range velocity. With the proposed error compensation step, the new method can achieve a very high accuracy in azimuth velocity estimation, as verified by experimental results based on both simulated data and the TerraSAR-X data

    EO-ALERT: A Novel Architecture for the Next Generation of Earth Observation Satellites Supporting Rapid Civil Alerts

    Satellite Earth Observation (EO) data is ubiquitously used in many applications, providing basic services to society, such as environment monitoring, emergency management and civilian security. Due to the increasing request of EO products by the market, the classical EO data chain generates a severe bottleneck problem, further exacerbated in constellations. A huge amount of EO raw data generated on-board the satellite must be transferred to ground, slowing down the EO product availability, increasing latency, and hampering the growth of applications in accordance with the increased user demand. This paper provides an overview of the results achieved by the EO-ALERT project (http://eo-alert-h2020.eu/), an H2020 European Union research activity led by DEIMOS Space. EO-ALERT proposes the definition and development of the next-generation EO data processing chain, based on a novel flight segment architecture that moves optimised key EO data processing elements from the ground segment to on-board the satellite, with the aim of delivering the EO products to the end user with very low latency (quasi-real-time). EO-ALERT achieves, globally, latencies below five minutes for EO products delivery, reaching latencies below 1 minute in some scenarios. The proposed architecture solves the above challenges through a combination of innovations in the on-board elements of the data chain and the communications. Namely, the architecture introduces innovative technological solutions, including on-board reconfigurable data handling, on-board image generation and processing for the generation of alerts (EO products) using Artificial Intelligence (AI), on-board data compression and encryption using AI, high-speed on-board avionics, and reconfigurable high data rate communication links to ground, including a separate chain for alerts with minimum latency and global coverage. The paper presents the proposed architecture, its performance and hardware, considering two different user scenarios; ship detection and extreme weather observation/nowcasting. The results show that, when implemented using COTS components and available communication links, the proposed architecture can deliver alerts to ground with latency lower than five minutes, for both SAR and Optical missions, demonstrating the viability of the EOALERT concept and architecture. The paper also discusses the implementation on an avionics test bench for testing the architecture with real EO data, with the aim of demonstrating that it can meet the requirements of the considered scenarios in terms of detection performance and provides technologies at a high TRL (4-5). When proven, this will open unprecedented opportunities for the exploitation of civil EO products, especially in latency sensitive scenarios, such as disaster management
