    Recognition of Similar Shaped Handwritten Marathi Characters Using Artificial Neural Network

    The growing need have handwritten Marathi character recognition in Indian offices such as passport, railways etc has made it vital area of a research. Similar shape characters are more prone to misclassification. In this paper a novel method is provided to recognize handwritten Marathi characters based on their features extraction and adaptive smoothing technique. Feature selections methods avoid unnecessary patterns in an image whereas adaptive smoothing technique form smooth shape of charecters. Combination of both these approaches leads to the better results. Previous study shows that, no one technique achieves 100% accuracy in handwritten character recognition area.     Handwritten Character Recognition of a Vernacular Language: The Odia Script

    Optical Character Recognition, i.e., OCR taking into account the principle of applying electronic or mechanical translation of images from printed, manually written or typewritten sources to editable version. As of late, OCR technology has been utilized in most of the industries for better management of various documents. OCR helps to edit the text, allow us to search for a word or phrase, and store it more compactly in the computer memory for future use and moreover, it can be processed by other applications. In India, a couple of organizations have designed OCR for some mainstream Indic dialects, for example, Devanagari, Hindi, Bangla and to some extent Telugu, Tamil, Gurmukhi, Odia, etc. However, it has been observed that the progress for Odia script recognition is quite less when contrasted with different dialects. Any recognition process works on some nearby standard databases. Till now, no such standard database available in the literature for Odia script. Apart from the existing standard databases for other Indic languages, in this thesis, we have designed databases on handwritten Odia Digit, and character for the simulation of the proposed schemes. In this thesis, four schemes have been suggested, one for the recognition of Odia digit and other three for atomic Odia character. Various issues of handwritten character recognition have been examined including feature extraction, the grouping of samples based on some characteristics, and designing classifiers. Also, different features such as statistical as well as structural of a character have been studied. It is not necessary that the character written by a person next time would always be of same shape and stroke. Hence, variability in the personal writing of different individual makes the character recognition quite challenging. Standard classifiers have been utilized for the recognition of Odia character set. An array of Gabor filters has been employed for recognition of Odia digits. In this regard, each image is divided into four blocks of equal size. Gabor filters with various scales and orientations have been applied to these sub-images keeping other filter parameters constant. The average energy is computed for each transformed image to obtain a feature vector for each digit. Further, a Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) has been employed to classify the samples taking the feature vector as input. In addition, the proposed scheme has also been tested on standard digit databases like MNIST and USPS. Toward the end of this part, an application has been intended to evaluate simple arithmetic equation. viii A multi-resolution scheme has been suggested to extract features from Odia atomic character and recognize them using the back propagation neural network. It has been observed that few Odia characters have a vertical line present toward the end. It helps in dividing the whole dataset into two subgroups, in particular, Group I and Group II such that all characters in Group I have a vertical line and rest are in Group II. The two class classification problem has been tackled by a single layer perceptron. Besides, the two-dimensional Discrete Orthogonal S-Transform (DOST) coefficients are extracted from images of each group, subsequently, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) has been applied to find significant features.     Spiteful Strategies. The ontogeny and the practice of spite in human interaction: an experimental game theory approach and empirical applications

    As estratégias de malevolência implicam que um indivíduo pague um custo para infligir um custo superior a um oponente. Como um dos comportamentos fundamentais da sociobiologia, a malevolência tem recebido menos atenção que os seus pares o egoísmo e a cooperação. Contudo, foi estabelecido que a malevolência é uma estratégia viável em populações pequenas quando usada contra indivíduos negativamente geneticamente relacionados pois este comportamento pode i) ser eliminado naturalmente, ou ii) manter-se em equilíbrio com estratégias cooperativas devido à disponibilidade da parte de indivíduos malevolentes de pagar um custo para punir. Esta tese propõe compreender se a propensão para a malevolência nos humanos é inerente ou se esta se desenvolve com a idade. Para esse efeito, considerei duas experiências de teoria de jogos em crianças em ambiente escolar com idades entre os 6 e os 22 anos. A primeira, um jogo 2x2 foi testada com duas variantes: 1) um prémio foi atribuído a ambos os jogadores, proporcionalmente aos pontos acumulados; 2), um prémio foi atribuído ao jogador com mais pontos. O jogo foi desenhado com o intuito de causar o seguinte dilema a cada jogador: i) maximizar o seu ganho e arriscar ter menos pontos que o adversário; ou ii) decidir não maximizar o seu ganho, garantindo que este não era inferior ao do seu adversário. A segunda experiência consistia num jogo do ditador com duas opções: uma escolha egoísta/altruísta (A), onde o ditador recebia mais ganho, mas o seu recipiente recebia mais que ele e uma escolha malevolente (B) que oferecia menos ganhos ao ditador que a A mas mais ganhos que o recipiente. O dilema era que se as crianças se comportassem de maneira egoísta, obtinham mais ganho para si, ao mesmo tempo que aumentavam o ganho do seu colega. Se fossem malevolentes, então prefeririam ter mais ganho que o seu colega ao mesmo tempo que tinham menos para eles próprios. As experiências foram efetuadas em escolas de duas áreas distintas de Portugal (continente e Açores) para perceber se as preferências malevolentes aumentavam ou diminuíam com a idade. Os resultados na primeira experiência sugerem que (1) os alunos compreenderam a primeira variante como um jogo de coordenação e comportaram-se como maximizadores, copiando as jogadas anteriores dos seus adversários; (2) que os alunos repetentes se comportaram preferencialmente como malevolentes, mais frequentemente que como maximizadores, com especial ênfase para os alunos de 14 anos; (3) maioria dos alunos comportou-se reciprocamente desde os 12 até aos 16 anos de idade, após os quais começaram a desenvolver uma maior tolerância às escolhas dos seus parceiros. Os resultados da segunda experiência sugerem que (1) as estratégias egoístas eram prevalentes até aos 6 anos de idade, (2) as tendências altruístas emergiram até aos 8 anos de idade e (3) as estratégias de malevolência começaram a emergir a partir dos 8 anos de idade. Estes resultados complementam a literatura relativamente escassa sobre malevolência e sugerem que este comportamento está intimamente ligado a preferências de consideração sobre os outros, o paroquialismo e os estágios de desenvolvimento das crianças.************************************************************Spite is defined as an act that causes loss of payoff to an opponent at a cost to the actor. As one of the four fundamental behaviours in sociobiology, it has received far less attention than its counterparts selfishness and cooperation. It has however been established as a viable strategy in small populations when used against negatively related individuals. Because of this, spite can either i) disappear or ii) remain at equilibrium with cooperative strategies due to the willingness of spiteful individuals to pay a cost in order to punish. This thesis sets out to understand whether propensity for spiteful behaviour is inherent or if it develops with age. For that effect, two game-theoretical experiments were performed with schoolboys and schoolgirls aged 6 to 22. The first, a 2 x 2 game, was tested in two variants: 1) a prize was awarded to both players, proportional to accumulated points; 2), a prize was given to the player with most points. Each player faced the following dilemma: i) to maximise pay-off risking a lower pay-off than the opponent; or ii) not to maximise pay-off in order to cut down the opponent below their own. The second game was a dictator experiment with two choices, (A) a selfish/altruistic choice affording more payoff to the donor than B, but more to the recipient than to the donor, and (B) a spiteful choice that afforded less payoff to the donor than A, but even lower payoff to the recipient. The dilemma here was that if subjects behaved selfishly, they obtained more payoff for themselves, while at the same time increasing their opponent payoff. If they were spiteful, they would rather have more payoff than their colleague, at the cost of less for themselves. Experiments were run in schools in two different areas in Portugal (mainland and Azores) to understand whether spiteful preferences varied with age. Results in the first experiment suggested that (1) students understood the first variant as a coordination game and engaged in maximising behaviour by copying their opponent’s plays; (2) repeating students preferentially engaged in spiteful behaviour more often than maximising behaviour, with special emphasis on 14 year-olds; (3) most students engaged in reciprocal behaviour from ages 12 to 16, as they began developing higher tolerance for their opponent choices. Results for the second experiment suggested that (1) selfish strategies were prevalent until the age of 6, (2) altruistic tendencies emerged since then, and (3) spiteful strategies began being chosen more often by 8 year-olds. These results add to the relatively scarce body of literature on spite and suggest that this type of behaviour is closely tied with other-regarding preferences, parochialism and the children’s stages of development

    Tailoring Organic Matter: from Molecular Design to Functional Supramolecular Species

    Chemistry beyond the molecule, supramolecular chemistry, has become an essential tool in developing complex chemical systems by mastering intermolecular noncovalent forces. Supramolecular chemistry is considered a key step in the evolution of chemistry to an information science. By appropriate manipulation of noncovalent interactions, the information stored at the molecular level can operate through retrieval, transfer and processing at the supramolecular level. The work presented in this thesis aims at the design of programs, or molecular recognition patterns (hydrogen bonding, donor-acceptors and metal-ion coordination), that operate by spontaneous self-assembly into well-defined and complex supramolecular architectures. Appropriate encoding of the single subunits and processing give access to a variety of systems. Specifically, by integrating active components, functional supramolecular devices are easily accessible. Combination of components that operate with photons or electrons yields photoactive or electroactive devices capable of electron or energy exchange/transfer processes that paved the way to supramolecular photonics and electronics. Additionally, being intrinsically dynamic, supramolecular chemistry provides potential properties such as self-healing, error correction and sensitivity to external stimulus. Self-organization has offered a striking new and chemical approach to the bottom-up nanofabrication and top-down miniaturization approaches in nanoscience and technology, avoiding laborious implementation of physical procedures

    The impact of customer satisfaction on purchase intention in Malaysian takaful industry

    To date the study of customer satisfaction and purchase intention have dominated the services literature. This study is aimed to investigate the impact of customer satisfaction on purchase intention among Takaful participants in Malaysia. A self-administered questionnaire is distributed to eight Takaful companies in Malaysia as a study setting for this study. Out of the total 600 distributed questionnaires 390 were finally selected for data analyses. It is expected that findings from this study will contribute to the existing literature to both theoretical and managerial approaches in order to better understand the pattern of customer satisfaction and purchase intention in Takaful industry settings
