    Cryogenic transfer options for exploration missions

    The literature of in-space cryogenic transfer is reviewed in order to propose transportation concepts to support the Space Exploration Initiative (SEI). Forty-nine references are listed and key findings are synopsized. An assessment of the current maturity of cryogenic transfer system technology is made. Although the settled transfer technique is the most mature technology, the No-Vent Fill technology is maturing rapidly. Future options for development of cryogenic transfer technology are also discussed

    A SOCIOTECHNICAL MODEL FOR UNDERSTANDING ORGANIZATIONAL TECHNOLOGY AND KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER

    Traditional technology transfer strategies tend to focus on physical organizational assets. However, these strategies tend to ignore essential social aspects of technology transfer which are key for organizations to harness the full benefits of these valuable yet usually underperforming partnerships. This paper will introduce a sociotechnical model for understanding technology transfer as an emergent result of key interactions between social and technical elements of both organizations involved. Applying a sociotechnical framework to technology transfer will allow for the application of sociotechnical concepts and tools with the potential of improving the learning quality of technology transfer efforts in which both parties will be able to learn from the other within a sociotechnical context. The paper will begin with a discussion of sociotechnical concepts within the context of knowledge and technology transfer. Recommendations for using the information in this paper to improve organizational technology transfer and absorption will be offered towards the end of the paper. This paper is mainly aimed at managers and knowledge management professionals although academics interested in technology and knowledge transfer within a sociotechnical context would also benefit from this paper

    Low lift-to-drag aero-assisted orbit transfer vehicles

    The results of systems analysis conducted on low life drag ratio (L/D) aero-assisted orbit transfer vehicle (AOTV's) are presented. The objectives for this class of vehicle and formulate technology development plans and funding levels to bring the required technologies to readiness levels, as well as develop a credible decision data base encompassing the entire range of low L/D concepts for use in future NASA Aeroassist Orbit Transfer Vehicles studies. Each candidate low L/D concept, the aerobrake, the lifting brake, and the aeromaneuvering concept could be made to work with technologies achievable by the early 1990's. All concepts require flexible structure with flexible thermal protection system (TPS) to be successfully integrated into the shuttle orbiter for launch, all required improvements in guidance and control to fly the dispersed atmospheres at high altitude, and all concepts had potential to evolve from ground-based to space-based operations

    NASA has a continuing mission to develop and transfer advanced technologies for the benefit of government space programs, the aerospace industry and the nation\u27s economy. In October, 1992, the NASA Administrator created a new Office of Advanced Concepts and Technology (OACT) that is comprised of both the former NASA Office of Commercial Programs (OCP) and the Space Technology Directorate of the Office of Aeronautics and Space Technology (OAST). The purposes of this new office include the development of innovative new technologies and concepts, and the rapid and effective transfer of technology into and from NASA as well as other organizations participating in the U.S. civil space program. In this paper, the character and interrelationships of OACT programs and plans will be summarized, including overarching strategic planning (e.g. the Integrated Technology Plan, ITP); space technology development efforts (for example, the NASA base and focused space research and technology programs); special technology innovation efforts (such as the Small Business Innovative Research, SBIR, program); and, efforts to promote commercial space development (e.g. the Centers for Commercial Development of Space, CCDSs). Particular emphasis will be given to technology transfer programs and efforts to improve technology transfer (such as the on-going development of the national technology transfer network). This paper will describe both existing technology transfer programs and current planning, as well as assessment and analysis activities aimed at enabling OACT to refine and energize NASA\u27s approaches to technology transfer. It will also evaluate recent recommendations made by internal and external review teams and others concerning technology transfer for the civil space program. These include a 1992 workshop on Technology Transfer and the Civil Space Program, as well as the results of two internal NASA-wide teams. Finally, the paper will identify options for the future of civil space technology transfer improvements

    Liner environment effects study

    The Liner Environment Effects Study Program is aimed at establishing a broad heat transfer data base under controlled experimental conditions by quantifying the effects of the combustion system conditions on the combustor liner thermal loading and on the flame radiation characteristics. Five liner concepts spanning the spectrum of liner design technology from the very simple to the most advanced concepts are investigated. These concepts comprise an uncooled liner, a conventional film cooled liner, an impingement/film cooled liner, a laser drilled liner approaching the concept of a porous wall, and a siliconized silicon carbide ceramic liner. Effect of fuel type is covered by using fuels containing 11.8, 12.8, and 14% hydrogen. Tests at 100, 200, and 300 psia provide a basis for evaluating the effect of pressure on the heat transfer. The effects of the atomization quality and spray characteristics are examined by varying the fuel spray Sauter mean diameter and the spray angle. Additional varied parameters include reference velocity, a wide range of equivalence ratio, cooling flow rate, coolant temperature and the velocity of the coolant stream on the backside of the liner

    Technology transfer from academic and scientific institutions has been transformed into a strategic variable for companies and nations who wish to cope with the challenges of a global economy. Since the early 1970s, many technology transfer models have tried to introduce key factors in the process. Previous studies have shown that technology transfer is influenced by various elements. This study is based on a review of two recent technology transfer models that we have used as basic concepts for developing our own conceptual model. Researcher–firm networks have been considered as key elements in the technology transfer process between public universities and firms. The conceptual model proposed could be useful to improve the efficiency of existing technology transfer mechanisms

    China’s technological performance as reflected in patents

    Various concepts for the comparison of countries by patent indicators have been developed for the comparison of countries based on patent indicators. These concepts are generally based on the application of patents in several important markets or the family size of patent applications. A specific observation is the limited transfer of PCT applications of Chinese origin, affecting all these concepts. Transnational patents prove to be a convenient and appropriate tool for making country comparisons by technology, particularly with respect to adequately consider China’s specific patent behaviour. Therefore the phenomenon of limited transfer of China’s PCT applications is analysed for transnational patents. This observation can be associated with lower patent values or with a decreasing export dynamic. The Chinese transfer rates vary considerably by technology as well as by the reason for lower transfer rates. It proves to be more adequate to take limited transfer rates into account. © 2021, The Author(s)
