Synthetic aperture radar/LANDSAT MSS image registration
Algorithms and procedures necessary to merge aircraft synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and LANDSAT multispectral scanner (MSS) imagery were determined. The design of a SAR/LANDSAT data merging system was developed. Aircraft SAR images were registered to the corresponding LANDSAT MSS scenes and were the subject of experimental investigations. Results indicate that the registration of SAR imagery with LANDSAT MSS imagery is feasible from a technical viewpoint, and useful from an information-content viewpoint
Modeling of dislocations and relaxation of functionals on 1-currents with discrete multiplicity
In the modeling of dislocations one is lead naturally to energies
concentrated on lines, where the integrand depends on the orientation and on
the Burgers vector of the dislocation, which belongs to a discrete lattice. The
dislocations may be identified with divergence-free matrix-valued measures
supported on curves or with 1-currents with multiplicity in a lattice. In this
paper we develop the theory of relaxation for these energies and provide one
physically motivated example in which the relaxation for some Burgers vectors
is nontrivial and can be determined explicitly. From a technical viewpoint the
key ingredients are an approximation and a structure theorem for 1-currents
with multiplicity in a lattice
Issues about the Adoption of Formal Methods for Dependable Composition of Web Services
Web Services provide interoperable mechanisms for describing, locating and
invoking services over the Internet; composition further enables to build
complex services out of simpler ones for complex B2B applications. While
current studies on these topics are mostly focused - from the technical
viewpoint - on standards and protocols, this paper investigates the adoption of
formal methods, especially for composition. We logically classify and analyze
three different (but interconnected) kinds of important issues towards this
goal, namely foundations, verification and extensions. The aim of this work is
to individuate the proper questions on the adoption of formal methods for
dependable composition of Web Services, not necessarily to find the optimal
answers. Nevertheless, we still try to propose some tentative answers based on
our proposal for a composition calculus, which we hope can animate a proper
discussion
Data-driven Design of Engineering Processes with COREPROModeler
Enterprises increasingly demand IT support for the coordination of their engineering processes, which often consist of hundreds up to thousands of sub-processes. From a technical viewpoint, these sub-processes have to be concurrently executed and synchronized considering numerous interdependencies.
So far, this coordination has mainly been accomplished manually, which has resulted in errors and inconsistencies. In order to deal with this problem, we have to better understand the interdependencies between the subprocesses to be coordinated. In particular, we can benefit from the fact that sub-processes are often correlated to the assembly of a product (represented by a product data structure). This information can be utilized for the modeling and execution of so-called data-driven process structures. In this paper, we present the COREPRO demonstrator that supports the data-driven modeling of these process structures. The approach explicitly establishes a close linkage between product data structures and engineering processes

Enhancing IT investments productivity: Integrating network QOS and it indirect costs
Increasing productivity is considered one of the major driving factors for a successful business. From an Information Technology (IT) infrastructure perspective, obtaining an optimised performance of resources is expected to improve productivity. From a technical viewpoint, the introduction of Quality of Service (QoS) models have been perceived to optimise the performance of the organisation network backbone. These models aim to provide an acceptable level of service assurance to the newly introduced applications and services such as voice and video. In addition, it aims to identify the relationship between network QoS and IT indirect costs. Such integration demonstrates how network QoS strategy can be used to control IT indirect costs as well as enhancing network performance

The Necessity for Non-Challenge Visits
YesIn the discussions that have taken place over the past six years since the establishment by the Third Review Conference1 in 1991 of the Ad Hoc Group of Governmental Experts,known as VEREX, to identify and examine potential verification measures from a scientific and technical viewpoint, there has been an increasing debate about the role of non-challenge
visits in a regime for a strengthened Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BTWC). The arguments as to why on-site investigations are an essential and central element to such a strengthened regime were addressed in the Briefing Paper issued2 in July 1997. In this Briefing Paper, the necessity for non-challenge visits is addressed drawing upon the previous VEREX, Ad Hoc Group (AHG), Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and United Nations Special Commission (UNSCOM) experience. The advantages and disadvantages of a regime containing non-challenge visits are considered and the conclusion is reached that the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages and that non-challenge visits are an important element which could contribute significantly to the effectiveness of a future legally binding instrument to strengthen the BTWC
Some Experiments on Fitting of Gielis Curves by Simulated Annealing and Particle Swarm Methods of Global Optimization
In this paper an attempt has been made to fit the Gielis curves (modified by various functions) to simulated data. The estimation has been done by two methods - the Classical Simulated Annealing (CSA) and the Particle Swarm (PS) methods - of global optimization. The Repulsive Particle Swarm (RPS) optimization algorithm has been used. It has been found that both methods are quite successful in fitting the modified Gielis curves to the data. However, the lack of uniqueness of Gielis parameters to data (from which they are estimated) is corroborated. From a technical viewpoint, this exercise may be considered as an application of CSA and RPS to extremely nonlinear least-squares curve-fitting to data that may exhibit a large number of local optima.Gielis curves; superformula; nonlinear curve-fitting; Least squares; multi-modal; local optima; global optimization; simulated annealing; particle swarm; parameters estimation
