    Comprehensive Review of Opinion Summarization

    The abundance of opinions on the web has kindled the study of opinion summarization over the last few years. People have introduced various techniques and paradigms to solving this special task. This survey attempts to systematically investigate the different techniques and approaches used in opinion summarization. We provide a multi-perspective classification of the approaches used and highlight some of the key weaknesses of these approaches. This survey also covers evaluation techniques and data sets used in studying the opinion summarization problem. Finally, we provide insights into some of the challenges that are left to be addressed as this will help set the trend for future research in this area.unpublishednot peer reviewe

Bielefeld: UniversitÀt Bielefeld; 2020.Everyday, vast amounts of unstructured, textual data are shared online in digital form. Websites such as forums, social media sites, review sites, blogs, and comment sections offer platforms to express and discuss opinions and experiences. Understanding the opinions in these resources is valuable for e.g. businesses to support market research and customer service but also individuals, who can benefit from the experiences and expertise of others. In this thesis, we approach the topic of opinion extraction and classification with neural network models. We regard this area of sentiment analysis as a relation extraction problem in which the sentiment of some opinion holder towards a certain aspect of a product, theme, or event needs to be extracted. In accordance with this framework, our main contributions are the following: 1. We propose a full system addressing all subtasks of relational sentiment analysis. 2. We investigate how semantic web resources can be leveraged in a neural-network-based model for the extraction of opinion targets and the classification of sentiment labels. Specifically, we experiment with enhancing pretrained word embeddings using the lexical resource WordNet. Furthermore, we enrich a purely text-based model with SenticNet concepts and observe an improvement for sentiment classification. 3. We examine how opinion targets can be automatically identified in noisy texts. Customer reviews, for instance, are prone to contain misspelled words and are difficult to process due to their domain-specific language. We integrate information about the character structure of a word into a sequence labeling system using character-level word embeddings and show their positive impact on the system's performance. We reveal encoded character patterns of the learned embeddings and give a nuanced view of the obtained performance differences. 4. Opinion target extraction usually relies on supervised learning approaches. We address the lack of available annotated data for specific languages by proposing a zero-shot cross-lingual approach for the extraction of opinion target expressions. We leverage multilingual word embeddings that share a common vector space across various languages and incorporate these into a convolutional neural network architecture. Our experiments with 5 languages give promising results: We can successfully train a model on annotated data of a source language and perform accurate prediction on a target language without ever using any annotated samples in that target language

    Investigating and extending the methods in automated opinion analysis through improvements in phrase based analysis

    Opinion analysis is an area of research which deals with the computational treatment of opinion statement and subjectivity in textual data. Opinion analysis has emerged over the past couple of decades as an active area of research, as it provides solutions to the issues raised by information overload. The problem of information overload has emerged with the advancements in communication technologies which gave rise to an exponential growth in user generated subjective data available online. Opinion analysis has a rich set of applications which are used to enable opportunities for organisations such as tracking user opinions about products, social issues in communities through to engagement in political participation etc.The opinion analysis area shows hyperactivity in recent years and research at different levels of granularity has, and is being undertaken. However it is observed that there are limitations in the state-of-the-art, especially as dealing with the level of granularities on their own does not solve current research issues. Therefore a novel sentence level opinion analysis approach utilising clause and phrase level analysis is proposed. This approach uses linguistic and syntactic analysis of sentences to understand the interdependence of words within sentences, and further uses rule based analysis for phrase level analysis to calculate the opinion at each hierarchical structure of a sentence. The proposed opinion analysis approach requires lexical and contextual resources for implementation. In the context of this Thesis the approach is further presented as part of an extended unifying framework for opinion analysis resulting in the design and construction of a novel corpus. The above contributions to the field (approach, framework and corpus) are evaluated within the Thesis and are found to make improvements on existing limitations in the field, particularly with regards to opinion analysis automation. Further work is required in integrating a mechanism for greater word sense disambiguation and in lexical resource development

    A Domain Oriented LDA Model for Mining Product Defects from Online Customer Reviews

    Online reviews provide important demand-side knowledge for product manufacturers to improve product quality. However, discovering and quantifying potential products’ defects from large amounts of online reviews is a nontrivial task. In this paper, we propose a Latent Product Defect Mining model that identifies critical product defects. We define domain-oriented key attributes, such as components and keywords used to describe a defect, and build a novel LDA model to identify and acquire integral information about product defects. We conduct comprehensive evaluations including quantitative and qualitative evaluations to ensure the quality of discovered information. Experimental results show that the proposed model outperforms the standard LDA model, and could find more valuable information. Our research contributes to the extant product quality analytics literature and has significant managerial implications for researchers, policy makers, customers, and practitioners

    Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis using Machine Learning and Deep Learning Approaches

    Sentiment analysis (SA) is also known as opinion mining, it is the process of gathering and analyzing people's opinions about a particular service, good, or company on websites like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and blogs, among other places. This article covers a thorough analysis of SA and its levels. This manuscript's main focus is on aspect-based SA, which helps manufacturing organizations make better decisions by examining consumers' viewpoints and opinions of their products. The many approaches and methods used in aspect-based sentiment analysis are covered in this review study (ABSA). The features associated with the aspects were manually drawn out in traditional methods, which made it a time-consuming and error-prone operation. Nevertheless, these restrictions may be overcome as artificial intelligence develops. Therefore, to increase the effectiveness of ABSA, researchers are increasingly using AI-based machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques. Additionally, certain recently released ABSA approaches based on ML and DL are examined, contrasted, and based on this research, gaps in both methodologies are discovered. At the conclusion of this study, the difficulties that current ABSA models encounter are also emphasized, along with suggestions that can be made to improve the efficacy and precision of ABSA systems

    Subjectivity detection is the task of identifying objective and subjective sentences. Objective sentences are those which do not exhibit any sentiment. So, it is desired for a sentiment analysis engine to find and separate the objective sentences for further analysis, e.g., polarity detection. In subjective sentences, opinions can often be expressed on one or multiple topics. Aspect extraction is a subtask of sentiment analysis that consists in identifying opinion targets in opinionated text, i.e., in detecting the specific aspects of a product or service the opinion holder is either praising or complaining about
