    Get PDF
This paper seeks to explore the significance of copyright protection in Malaysia’s business environment of the digital era. Copyright law is increasingly being challenged with the intensification of internet use now. Issues of piracy and infringement of rights raise concerns surrounding the enforcement of legal measures for protection of copyrights. Hence the paper aim to understand the role and function of copyright in the digital era, and assessing the Malaysian society’s awareness of cyberspace copyright protection. This is an interpretive research carried out by conducting interviews, on 3 different groups of respondents, which are the dot.com companies, the IP professionals and government officials. The findings indicate there is a difference amongst the three groups in the understanding and awareness of Intellectual Property Rights and copyright protection; and that Malaysian government is not actively and effectively promoting awareness of the copyright issues to the public. Also it is imperative for Malaysian authorities to enhance protection of copyright in cyberspace.

This article analyzes the relationship between the usage of Internet-based technologies, different types of innovation, and performance at the firm level. Data for the empirical investigation originates from a sample of 7,302 European enterprises. The empirical results show that Internet-based technologies were an important enabler of innovation in the year 2003. It was found that all studied types of innovation, including Internet-enabled and non-Internet-enabled product or process innovations, are positively associated with turnover and employment growth. Firms that rely on Internet-enabled innovations are at least as likely to grow as firms that rely on non-Internet-enabled innovations. Finally, it was found that innovative activity is not necessarily associated with higher profitability. Possible reasons for this and implications are discussed.firm performance;innovation;information technology;profitability;e-business

The internet of Things (IoT) is a field with increasing development due to its effect in all aspects of society. Within this context the amount of data and devices that are inte-grated into this new internet is exploding and will continue to do so in the foreseeable fu-ture. One of the main and prevalent challenges to the IoT is the ease of integration be-tween applications and the general infrastructure underneath; namely a simple way of allowing horizontal integration of devices and applications. The most important challenge to accomplish this is the fact that the models for sensors and actuators that face applica-tions are heterogenous, which means that not all sensors provide data in the same for-mat and not all actuators are operated in the same way. From an application¿s point of view this makes any kind of integration an important challenge. Another pain point for integration is the fact that communication protocols used by many devices are many times different, which means that any application hoping to integrate different type devic-es needs to make sure it can work with many protocols, which increases the complexity required. From these challenges the appearance of a middle component that facilitates the interaction of devices and applications is necessary. The work presented here pro-poses a solution to these integration problems by means of a middleware as an interme-diate layer that bridges applications and devices in a transparent way, which in turn al-lows real-time data collection and historic data analysis. To achieve this, we propose the use of a virtual device model that presents a simpler version to the application, while ex-tending its capabilities, such as memory and processing power. Another effect of this virtual device model definition is that it creates a homogenous model that allows the search for devices within the middleware based on specific attributes; for example, it is possible to search for all temperature sensors, irrespective of any other characteristics. All these allow any application to integrate into any IoT network without prior knowledge of the specific devices that exist in it, which fosters greater integrationMestradoTelecomunicações e TelemáticaMestre em Engenharia Elétric

Palavras-chave: redes IP móveis, micromobilidade, gerência de rede, engenharia de tráfegoAbstract: Micro-mobility architectures have been proposed to meet the growing interest in technologies supporting mobility in IP networks. MPA (Mobility Plane Architecture), developed at the FEEC/Unicamp, is a micro-mobility solution based on tunneling of packets that employs only well standardized protocols. When applications for supporting seamless handover and traffic engineering in MPA started to be designed, it was noticed that these applications demand a set of common services. This dissertation presents the MIS (Mobility Infrastructure Services) platform which provides a set of services that meet the common basic features demanded by applications of network management, traffic engineering and mobility management. The proposed platform facilitates the development of these applications when they are targeted to MPA and other micro-mobility architectures. This dissertation reports the design, implementation, ant test of the MIS platform, along with two case studies in mobility management and traffic engineering.
