    Design of a High-Speed Architecture for Stabilization of Video Captured Under Non-Uniform Lighting Conditions

    Video captured in shaky conditions may lead to vibrations. A robust algorithm to immobilize the video by compensating for the vibrations from physical settings of the camera is presented in this dissertation. A very high performance hardware architecture on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology is also developed for the implementation of the stabilization system. Stabilization of video sequences captured under non-uniform lighting conditions begins with a nonlinear enhancement process. This improves the visibility of the scene captured from physical sensing devices which have limited dynamic range. This physical limitation causes the saturated region of the image to shadow out the rest of the scene. It is therefore desirable to bring back a more uniform scene which eliminates the shadows to a certain extent. Stabilization of video requires the estimation of global motion parameters. By obtaining reliable background motion, the video can be spatially transformed to the reference sequence thereby eliminating the unintended motion of the camera. A reflectance-illuminance model for video enhancement is used in this research work to improve the visibility and quality of the scene. With fast color space conversion, the computational complexity is reduced to a minimum. The basic video stabilization model is formulated and configured for hardware implementation. Such a model involves evaluation of reliable features for tracking, motion estimation, and affine transformation to map the display coordinates of a stabilized sequence. The multiplications, divisions and exponentiations are replaced by simple arithmetic and logic operations using improved log-domain computations in the hardware modules. On Xilinx\u27s Virtex II 2V8000-5 FPGA platform, the prototype system consumes 59% logic slices, 30% flip-flops, 34% lookup tables, 35% embedded RAMs and two ZBT frame buffers. The system is capable of rendering 180.9 million pixels per second (mpps) and consumes approximately 30.6 watts of power at 1.5 volts. With a 1024×1024 frame, the throughput is equivalent to 172 frames per second (fps). Future work will optimize the performance-resource trade-off to meet the specific needs of the applications. It further extends the model for extraction and tracking of moving objects as our model inherently encapsulates the attributes of spatial distortion and motion prediction to reduce complexity. With these parameters to narrow down the processing range, it is possible to achieve a minimum of 20 fps on desktop computers with Intel Core 2 Duo or Quad Core CPUs and 2GB DDR2 memory without a dedicated hardware

    Learning as a Nonlinear Line of Attraction for Pattern Association, Classification and Recognition

    Development of a mathematical model for learning a nonlinear line of attraction is presented in this dissertation, in contrast to the conventional recurrent neural network model in which the memory is stored in an attractive fixed point at discrete location in state space. A nonlinear line of attraction is the encapsulation of attractive fixed points scattered in state space as an attractive nonlinear line, describing patterns with similar characteristics as a family of patterns. It is usually of prime imperative to guarantee the convergence of the dynamics of the recurrent network for associative learning and recall. We propose to alter this picture. That is, if the brain remembers by converging to the state representing familiar patterns, it should also diverge from such states when presented by an unknown encoded representation of a visual image. The conception of the dynamics of the nonlinear line attractor network to operate between stable and unstable states is the second contribution in this dissertation research. These criteria can be used to circumvent the plasticity-stability dilemma by using the unstable state as an indicator to create a new line for an unfamiliar pattern. This novel learning strategy utilizes stability (convergence) and instability (divergence) criteria of the designed dynamics to induce self-organizing behavior. The self-organizing behavior of the nonlinear line attractor model can manifest complex dynamics in an unsupervised manner. The third contribution of this dissertation is the introduction of the concept of manifold of color perception. The fourth contribution of this dissertation is the development of a nonlinear dimensionality reduction technique by embedding a set of related observations into a low-dimensional space utilizing the result attained by the learned memory matrices of the nonlinear line attractor network. Development of a system for affective states computation is also presented in this dissertation. This system is capable of extracting the user\u27s mental state in real time using a low cost computer. It is successfully interfaced with an advanced learning environment for human-computer interaction

    Since convolutional neural network (CNN) was first implemented by Yann LeCun et al. in 1989, CNN and its variants have been widely implemented to numerous topics of pattern recognition, and have been considered as the most crucial techniques in the field of artificial intelligence and computer vision. This dissertation not only demonstrates the implementation aspect of CNN, but also lays emphasis on the methodology of neural network (NN) based classifier. As known to many, one general pipeline of NN-based classifier can be recognized as three stages: pre-processing, inference by models, and post-processing. To demonstrate the importance of pre-processing techniques, this dissertation presents how to model actual problems in medical pattern recognition and image processing by introducing conceptual abstraction and fuzzification. In particular, a transformer on the basis of self-attention mechanism, namely beat-rhythm transformer, greatly benefits from correct R-peak detection results and conceptual fuzzification. Recently proposed self-attention mechanism has been proven to be the top performer in the fields of computer vision and natural language processing. In spite of the pleasant accuracy and precision it has gained, it usually consumes huge computational resources to perform self-attention. Therefore, realtime global attention network is proposed to make a better trade-off between efficiency and performance for the task of image segmentation. To illustrate more on the stage of inference, we also propose models to detect polyps via Faster R-CNN - one of the most popular CNN-based 2D detectors, as well as a 3D object detection pipeline for regressing 3D bounding boxes from LiDAR points and stereo image pairs powered by CNN. The goal for post-processing stage is to refine artifacts inferred by models. For the semantic segmentation task, the dilated continuous random field is proposed to be better fitted to CNN-based models than the widely implemented fully-connected continuous random field.     Energy efficient enabling technologies for semantic video processing on mobile devices

    Semantic object-based processing will play an increasingly important role in future multimedia systems due to the ubiquity of digital multimedia capture/playback technologies and increasing storage capacity. Although the object based paradigm has many undeniable benefits, numerous technical challenges remain before the applications becomes pervasive, particularly on computational constrained mobile devices. A fundamental issue is the ill-posed problem of semantic object segmentation. Furthermore, on battery powered mobile computing devices, the additional algorithmic complexity of semantic object based processing compared to conventional video processing is highly undesirable both from a real-time operation and battery life perspective. This thesis attempts to tackle these issues by firstly constraining the solution space and focusing on the human face as a primary semantic concept of use to users of mobile devices. A novel face detection algorithm is proposed, which from the outset was designed to be amenable to be offloaded from the host microprocessor to dedicated hardware, thereby providing real-time performance and reducing power consumption. The algorithm uses an Artificial Neural Network (ANN), whose topology and weights are evolved via a genetic algorithm (GA). The computational burden of the ANN evaluation is offloaded to a dedicated hardware accelerator, which is capable of processing any evolved network topology. Efficient arithmetic circuitry, which leverages modified Booth recoding, column compressors and carry save adders, is adopted throughout the design. To tackle the increased computational costs associated with object tracking or object based shape encoding, a novel energy efficient binary motion estimation architecture is proposed. Energy is reduced in the proposed motion estimation architecture by minimising the redundant operations inherent in the binary data. Both architectures are shown to compare favourable with the relevant prior art

    Design and implementation of a digital neural processor for detection applications

    The main focus of this research is to develop a digital neural network (processor) and hardware (VLSI) implementation of the same for detection applications, for example in the distance protection of power transmission lines. Using a hardware neural processor will improve the protection system performance over software implementations in terms of speed of operation, response time for faults etc. The main aspects of this research are software design, performance analysis, hardware design and hardware implementation of the digital neural processor. The software design is carried out by developing an object oriented neural network simulator with backpropagation training using C++ language. A preliminary analysis shows that the inputs to the neural network need to be preprocessed. Two filters have been developed for this purpose, based on the analysis of the training data available. The performance analysis involves studying quantization effects (determination of precision requirements) in the network. -- The hardware design involves design of the neural network and the preprocessors. The neural processor consists of three types of processing elements (neurons): input, hidden and output neurons. The input neurons form the input layer of the processor which receive input from the preprocessors. The input layer can be configured to directly receive external input by changing the mode of operation. The output layer gives the signal to the relay for tripping the line under fault. Each neuron consists of datapath and local control unit. Datapath consists of the components for forward and backward passes of the processor and the register file. The local control unit controls the flow of data within a neuron and co-ordinates with the global control unit which controls the flow of data between layers. The neurons and the layers are pipelined for improving the throughput of the processor. The neural processor and the filters are implemented in VLSI using hardware description language (VHDL) and Synopsys / Cadence CAD tools. All the components are individually verified and tested for their functionality and implemented using 0.5 μ CMOS technology
