    Climbing and Walking Robots

    With the advancement of technology, new exciting approaches enable us to render mobile robotic systems more versatile, robust and cost-efficient. Some researchers combine climbing and walking techniques with a modular approach, a reconfigurable approach, or a swarm approach to realize novel prototypes as flexible mobile robotic platforms featuring all necessary locomotion capabilities. The purpose of this book is to provide an overview of the latest wide-range achievements in climbing and walking robotic technology to researchers, scientists, and engineers throughout the world. Different aspects including control simulation, locomotion realization, methodology, and system integration are presented from the scientific and from the technical point of view. This book consists of two main parts, one dealing with walking robots, the second with climbing robots. The content is also grouped by theoretical research and applicative realization. Every chapter offers a considerable amount of interesting and useful information

    Design of novel adaptive magnetic adhesion mechanism for climbing robots in ferric structures

    The work presented in this thesis proposes a novel adaptive magnetic adhesion mechanism that can be implemented in most locomotion mechanisms employed in climbing robots for ferric structures. This novel mechanism has the capability to switch OFF and ON its magnetic adhesion with minimal power consumption, and remain at either state after the excitation is removed. Furthermore, the proposed adhesion mechanism has the ability to adapt the strength of the adhesive force to a desired magnitude. These capabilities make the proposed adhesion mechanism a potential solution in the field of wall climbing robots. The novel contributions of the proposed mechanism include the switching of the adhesive force, selectivity of the adhesive force magnitude; determination of the parameters that have an impact in the final adhesive force. Finally, a final prototype is constructed with customised components and it is subject to a set of simulations and experiments to validate its performance

    Developing integrated data fusion algorithms for a portable cargo screening detection system

    Towards having a one size fits all solution to cocaine detection at borders; this thesis proposes a systematic cocaine detection methodology that can use raw data output from a fibre optic sensor to produce a set of unique features whose decisions can be combined to lead to reliable output. This multidisciplinary research makes use of real data sourced from cocaine analyte detecting fibre optic sensor developed by one of the collaborators - City University, London. This research advocates a two-step approach: For the first step, the raw sensor data are collected and stored. Level one fusion i.e. analyses, pre-processing and feature extraction is performed at this stage. In step two, using experimentally pre-determined thresholds, each feature decides on detection of cocaine or otherwise with a corresponding posterior probability. High level sensor fusion is then performed on this output locally to combine these decisions and their probabilities at time intervals. Output from every time interval is stored in the database and used as prior data for the next time interval. The final output is a decision on detection of cocaine. The key contributions of this thesis includes investigating the use of data fusion techniques as a solution for overcoming challenges in the real time detection of cocaine using fibre optic sensor technology together with an innovative user interface design. A generalizable sensor fusion architecture is suggested and implemented using the Bayesian and Dempster-Shafer techniques. The results from implemented experiments show great promise with this architecture especially in overcoming sensor limitations. A 5-fold cross validation system using a 12 13 - 1 Neural Network was used in validating the feature selection process. This validation step yielded 89.5% and 10.5% true positive and false alarm rates with 0.8 correlation coefficient. Using the Bayesian Technique, it is possible to achieve 100% detection whilst the Dempster Shafer technique achieves a 95% detection using the same features as inputs to the DF system

    Manned Mars System Study (MMSS): Mars transportation and facility infrastructure study. Volume 2: Technical report

    The Manned Mars System Study (MMSS) was conducted for the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) over the 35 month period between May 15, 1987 and April 30, 1990. During the course of the study, the NASA Office of Exploration (OEXP; Code Z) was created and MSFC was subsequently designated the Transportation Integration Agent (TIA) for support of the OEXP Mission Analysis and Systems Engineering (MASE) team. As a result of this action, modifications to the contract redirected the efforts to be consistent with NASA's overall objectives, including lunar transportation system design. A large number of written submittals were required in order to provide TIA support to MASE. A list summarizing the documents which have been prepared and delivered by Martin Marietta under this contract during the course of this work is presented. In nearly all cases, full sets of view-graphs were also provided to the MSFC COTR, and in several cases magnetic media were provided as well. To incorporate all of these materials (more than 2,000 pages) into the present report would obviously produce an extremely unwieldy and confusing document. Therefore, a summary of key findings are presented in this final report, supplemented by other material produced under this contract but not already available in the widespread literature

    The study topics cover a broad range of potential space and aeronautics projects which could be undertaken during a 20-30 year period beginning with the Space Station Initial Operating Configuration scheduled for the mid 1990's. Both manned and unmanned endeavors are embraced, and the systems approach to the design problem is emphasized. The student teams pursue the chosen problem during their senior year in a one or two semester capstone design course and submit a comprehensive written report at the conclusion of the project. Finally, student representatives from each of the universities summarize their work in oral presentations at the annual Summer Conference, held at one of the NASA centers and attended by the university faculty, NASA and USRA personnel, and aerospace industry representatives
