    Describing and Simulating Dynamic Reconfiguration in SystemC Exemplified by a Dedicated 3D Collision Detection Hardware

    The ongoing trend towards development of parallel software and the increased flexibility of state-of-the-art programmable logic devices are currently converging in the field of reconfigurable hardware. On the other hand there is the traditional hardware market, with its increasingly short development cycles, which is mainly driven by high-level prototyping of products. To enable the design community to conveniently develop reconfigurable architectures in a short time-to-market, this thesis introduces the library ReChannel, which extends SystemC with advanced language constructs for high level reconfiguration modelling. It combines IP reuse and high-level modelling with reconfiguration. The proposed methodology was tested on a hierarchical FPGA-based 3D collision detection accelerator, is also presented. To enable implementation of such a complex algorithm in FPGA logic it had to be implemented using fixed-point arithmetic. Therefore a special method was derived that enables rounding of the used bounding-volumes without incurring the correctness of the non-intersection reports. This guarantees a correct overall result. A bound on the rounding error was derived that gives a measure of the number of false intersection reports, and thus on the run-time.     A Field Programmable Gate Array Architecture for Two-Dimensional Partial Reconfiguration

    Reconfigurable machines can accelerate many applications by adapting to their needs through hardware reconfiguration. Partial reconfiguration allows the reconfiguration of a portion of a chip while the rest of the chip is busy working on tasks. Operating system models have been proposed for partially reconfigurable machines to handle the scheduling and placement of tasks. They are called OS4RC in this dissertation. The main goal of this research is to address some problems that come from the gap between OS4RC and existing chip architectures and the gap between OS4RC models and practical applications. Some existing OS4RC models are based on an impractical assumption that there is no data exchange channel between IP (Intellectual Property) circuits residing on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) chip and between an IP circuit and FPGA I/O pins. For models that do not have such an assumption, their inter-IP communication channels have severe drawbacks. Those channels do not work well with 2-D partial reconfiguration. They are not suitable for intensive data stream processing. And frequently they are very complicated to design and very expensive. To address these problems, a new chip architecture that can better support inter-IP and IP-I/O communication is proposed and a corresponding OS4RC kernel is then specified. The proposed FPGA architecture is based on an array of clusters of configurable logic blocks, with each cluster serving as a partial reconfiguration unit, and a mesh of segmented buses that provides inter-IP and IP-I/O communication channels. The proposed OS4RC kernel takes care of the scheduling, placement, and routing of circuits under the constraints of the proposed architecture. Features of the new architecture in turns reduce the kernel execution times and enable the runtime scheduling, placement and routing. The area cost and the configuration memory size of the new chip architecture are calculated and analyzed. And the efficiency of the OS4RC kernel is evaluated via simulation using three different task models

    Modelling and analysis of next generation home networks

    As Home Networking grows over the next 20 years the need for accurate models for both the network and the hardware becomes apparent. In this work, these two areas are considered together to develop a combined hardware and network model for a HomePlug power line based network. This change of focus is important when the type of devices that will be running on tomorrow's home network is considered. It will have evolved from a simple network of PCs sharing an Internet connection to a large heterogeneous structure of embedded System-on-Chip devices communicating on a variety of linked network technologies.This work presents a novel combined hardware and network modelling tool that address the following areas: 1. Development of a system level model of a HomePlug power-line based network, including the fundamental network protocols, the SoC hardware and the physical channel. 2. Use the developed model to explore various system scenarios. 3. Development of alternative hardware algorithms within the design. The model developed uses a Discrete Event simulation method to allow designers to explore areas such as: 1. How does the networking hardware (i.e. the components on the SoC) interact, and what are the issues of changing the algorithms. 2.
