    Eligible earliest deadline first:Server-based scheduling for master-slave industrial wireless networks

    Industrial automation and control systems are increasingly deployed using wireless networks in master-slave, star-type configurations that employ a slotted timeline schedule. In this paper, the scheduling of (re)transmissions to meet real-time constraints in the presence of non-uniform interference in such networks is considered. As packet losses often occur in correlated bursts, it is often useful to insert gaps before attempting retransmissions. In this paper, a quantum Earliest Deadline First (EDF) scheduling framework entitled ‘Eligible EDF’ is suggested for assigning (re)transmissions to available timeline slots by the master node. A simple but effective server strategy is introduced to reclaim unused channel utilization and replenish failed slave transmissions, a strategy which prevents cascading failures and naturally introduces retransmission gaps. Analysis and examples illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Specifically, the proposed framework gives a timely throughput of 99.81% of the timely throughput that is optimally achievable using a clairvoyant scheduler

    Channel adaptive real-time medium access control protocols for industrial wireless networks

    Wireless technology is increasingly finding its way into industrial communication because of the tremendous advantages it is capable of offering. However, the high bit error rate characteristics of wireless channel due to conditions, such as attenuation, noise, channel fading and interference seriously impact the timeliness and reliability guarantee that need to be provided for real-time traffic. Existing wireless protocols either do not adapt well to erroneous channel conditions or do not provide real-time guarantees. The goal of our work is to design and evaluate novel real-time MAC (Medium Access Control) protocols for combined scheduling of periodic and aperiodic messages taking into account the time-varying channel condition.;Our first contribution is the design of a combined scheduling algorithm that exploits both spatial and temporal diversity of the wireless channel through exchange of slots among nodes, to effectively mitigate bursty channel error conditions. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves significant improvements in message success ratio compared to baseline protocols under a wide range of traffic and channel conditions.;The second contribution assumes a two-level hierarchical network in which nodes are grouped into clusters and the communication occurs within each cluster and across clusters. The goal is to maximize the schedulability of intra- and inter-cluster periodic and aperiodic messages with deadline guarantees. In this context, we propose an Adaptive protocol that maximizes the channel utilization by enabling parallel transmissions in a collision-free manner, in conjunction with the use of the slot-exchange technique to actively combat the erroneous channel conditions. Through simulation studies, we show that the proposed Adaptive protocol achieves significant improvement in packet loss performance compared to the baseline protocols that exploit complete parallelism and full exchange, for a wide range of channel conditions.;The future work includes: (i) Formulation of the MAC scheduling problem to a n-level hierarchical network and developing novel scheduling algorithms (ii) Extending the scheduling problem to account for node mobility and developing mobility-aware MAC protocols

    Modelação e simulação de equipamentos de rede para Indústria 4.0

    Currently, the industrial sector has increasingly opted for digital technologies in order to automate all its processes. This development comes from notions like Industry 4.0 that redefines the way these systems are designed. Structurally, all the components of these systems are connected in a complex network known as the Industrial Internet of Things. Certain requirements arise from this concept regarding industrial communication networks. Among them, the need to ensure real-time communications, as well as support for dynamic resource management, are extremely relevant. Several research lines pursued to develop network technologies capable of meeting such requirements. One of these protocols is the Hard Real-Time Ethernet Switch (HaRTES), an Ethernet switch with support for real-time communications and dynamic resource management, requirements imposed by Industry 4.0. The process of designing and implementing industrial networks can, however, be quite time consuming and costly. These aspects impose limitations on testing large networks, whose level of complexity is higher and requires the usage of more hardware. The utilization of network simulators stems from the necessity to overcome such restrictions and provide tools to facilitate the development of new protocols and evaluation of communications networks. In the scope of this dissertation a HaRTES switch model was developed in the OMNeT++ simulation environment. In order to demonstrate a solution that can be employed in industrial real-time networks, this dissertation presents the fundamental aspects of the implemented model as well as a set of experiments that compare it with an existing laboratory prototype, with the objective of validating its implementation.Atualmente o setor industrial tem vindo cada vez mais a optar por tecnologias digitais de forma a automatizar todos os seus processos. Este desenvolvimento surge de noções como Indústria 4.0, que redefine o modo de como estes sistemas são projetados. Estruturalmente, todos os componentes destes sistemas encontram-se conectados numa rede complexa conhecida como Internet Industrial das Coisas. Certos requisitos advêm deste conceito, no que toca às redes de comunicação industriais, entre os quais se destacam a necessidade de garantir comunicações tempo-real bem como suporte a uma gestão dinâmica dos recursos, os quais são de extrema importância. Várias linhas de investigação procuraram desenvolver tecnologias de rede capazes de satisfazer tais exigências. Uma destas soluções é o "Hard Real-Time Ethernet Switch" (HaRTES), um switch Ethernet com suporte a comunicações de tempo-real e gestão dinâmica de Qualidade-de-Serviço (QoS), requisitos impostos pela Indústria 4.0. O processo de projeto e implementação de redes industriais pode, no entanto, ser bastante moroso e dispendioso. Tais aspetos impõem limitações no teste de redes de largas dimensões, cujo nível de complexidade é mais elevado e requer o uso de mais hardware. Os simuladores de redes permitem atenuar o impacto de tais limitações, disponibilizando ferramentas que facilitam o desenvolvimento de novos protocolos e a avaliação de redes de comunicações. No âmbito desta dissertação desenvolveu-se um modelo do switch HaRTES no ambiente de simulação OMNeT++.     New Solutions Based On Wireless Networks For Dynamic Traffic Lights Management: A Comparison Between IEEE 802.15.4 And Bluetooth

    Abstract The Wireless Sensor Networks are widely used to detect and exchange information and in recent years they have been increasingly involved in Intelligent Transportation System applications, especially in dynamic management of signalized intersections. In fact, the real-time knowledge of information concerning traffic light junctions represents a valid solution to congestion problems. In this paper, a wireless network architecture, based on IEEE 802.15.4 or Bluetooth, in order to monitor vehicular traffic flows near to traffic lights, is introduced. Moreover, an innovative algorithm is proposed in order to determine dynamically green times and phase sequence of traffic lights, based on measured values of traffic flows. Several simulations compare IEEE 802.15.4 and Bluetooth protocols in order to identify the more suitable communication protocol for ITS applications. Furthermore, in order to confirm the validity of the proposed algorithm for the dynamic management of traffic lights, some case studies have been considered and several simulations have been performed

    Feedback Control Goes Wireless: Guaranteed Stability over Low-power Multi-hop Networks

    Closing feedback loops fast and over long distances is key to emerging applications; for example, robot motion control and swarm coordination require update intervals of tens of milliseconds. Low-power wireless technology is preferred for its low cost, small form factor, and flexibility, especially if the devices support multi-hop communication. So far, however, feedback control over wireless multi-hop networks has only been shown for update intervals on the order of seconds. This paper presents a wireless embedded system that tames imperfections impairing control performance (e.g., jitter and message loss), and a control design that exploits the essential properties of this system to provably guarantee closed-loop stability for physical processes with linear time-invariant dynamics. Using experiments on a cyber-physical testbed with 20 wireless nodes and multiple cart-pole systems, we are the first to demonstrate and evaluate feedback control and coordination over wireless multi-hop networks for update intervals of 20 to 50 milliseconds.Comment: Accepted final version to appear in: 10th ACM/IEEE International Conference on Cyber-Physical Systems (with CPS-IoT Week 2019) (ICCPS '19), April 16--18, 2019, Montreal, QC, Canad

    An Optimal Medium Access Control with Partial Observations for Sensor Networks

    We consider medium access control (MAC) in multihop sensor networks, where only partial information about the shared medium is available to the transmitter. We model our setting as a queuing problem in which the service rate of a queue is a function of a partially observed Markov chain representing the available bandwidth, and in which the arrivals are controlled based on the partial observations so as to keep the system in a desirable mildly unstable regime. The optimal controller for this problem satisfies a separation property: we first compute a probability measure on the state space of the chain, namely the information state, then use this measure as the new state on which the control decisions are based. We give a formal description of the system considered and of its dynamics, we formalize and solve an optimal control problem, and we show numerical simulations to illustrate with concrete examples properties of the optimal control law. We show how the ergodic behavior of our queuing model is characterized by an invariant measure over all possible information states, and we construct that measure. Our results can be specifically applied for designing efficient and stable algorithms for medium access control in multiple-accessed systems, in particular for sensor networks

    The Car and The Cloud: Automotive Architectures for 2020

    Three trends are emerging in drivers’ expectations for their vehicle: (1) continuous connectivity with both the infrastructure (e.g., smart traffic intersections) and other commuters, (2) enhanced levels of productivity and entertainment for the duration of travel, and (3) reduction in cognitive load through semiautonomous operation and automated congestion-aware route planning. To address these demands, vehicles should become more programmable so that almost every aspect of engine control, cabin comfort, connectivity, navigation, and safety will be remotely upgradable and designed to evolve over the lifetime of the vehicle. Progress toward the vehicle of the future will entail new approaches in the design and sustainability of vehicles so that they are connected to networked traffic systems and are programmable over the course of their lifetime. To that end, our automotive research team at the University of Pennsylvania is devel- oping an in-vehicle programmable system, AutoPlug, an automotive architecture for remote diagnostics, testing, and code updates for dispatch from a datacenter to vehicle electronic controller units. For connected vehicles, we are implementing a networked vehicle platform, GrooveNet, that allows communication between real and simulated vehicles to evaluate the feasibility and application of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication; the focus in this paper is on its application to safety. Finally, we are working on a tool for large-scale traffic congestion analysis, AutoMatrix, capable of simulating over 16 million vehicles on any US street map and computing real-time fastest paths for a large subset of vehicles.
