    FPGA design methodology for industrial control systems—a review

    This paper reviews the state of the art of fieldprogrammable gate array (FPGA) design methodologies with a focus on industrial control system applications. This paper starts with an overview of FPGA technology development, followed by a presentation of design methodologies, development tools and relevant CAD environments, including the use of portable hardware description languages and system level programming/design tools. They enable a holistic functional approach with the major advantage of setting up a unique modeling and evaluation environment for complete industrial electronics systems. Three main design rules are then presented. These are algorithm refinement, modularity, and systematic search for the best compromise between the control performance and the architectural constraints. An overview of contributions and limits of FPGAs is also given, followed by a short survey of FPGA-based intelligent controllers for modern industrial systems. Finally, two complete and timely case studies are presented to illustrate the benefits of an FPGA implementation when using the proposed system modeling and design methodology. These consist of the direct torque control for induction motor drives and the control of a diesel-driven synchronous stand-alone generator with the help of fuzzy logic

    An evolutionary approach to the use of Petri net based models: from parallel controllers to HW/SW co-design

We describe the use of PN models to specify synchronous parallel controllers and how PN speci cations can be extended to include the behavioural description of the data path, by using object-oriented concepts. Some hierarchical mechanisms which deal with the speci cation of complex digital systems are highlighted. It is described a design flow that includes, among others, the automatic generation of VHDL code to synthesize the control unit of the system. The use of PNs as part of a multiple-view model within an object-oriented methodology for hardware/software codesign is debated. The EDgAR-2 platform is considered as the recon gurable target architecture for implementing the systems and its main characteristics are shown

    A proposed synthesis method for Application-Specific Instruction Set Processors

    Due to the rapid technology advancement in integrated circuit era, the need for the high computation performance together with increasing complexity and manufacturing costs has raised the demand for high-performance con fi gurable designs; therefore, the Application-Speci fi c Instruction Set Processors (ASIPs) are widely used in SoC design. The automated generation of software tools for ASIPs is a commonly used technique, but the automated hardware model generation is less frequently applied in terms of fi nal RTL implementations. Contrary to this, the fi nal register-transfer level models are usually created, at least partly, manually. This paper presents a novel approach for automated hardware model generation for ASIPs. The new solution is based on a novel abstract ASIP model and a modeling language (Algorithmic Microarchitecture Description Language, AMDL) optimized for this architecture model. The proposed AMDL-based pre-synthesis method is based on a set of pre-de fi ned VHDL implementation schemes, which ensure the qualities of the automatically generated register-transfer level models in terms of resource requirement and operation frequency.     Verification of Intellectual Property Blocks Using Reconfigurable Hardware

    The purpose of this thesis is to develop a procedure to verify intellectual property (IP)cores on the Pilchard platform which contains reconfigurable hardware. The hardware and tools used for the verification process are documented. Two IP cores are used as examples of how the Pilchard design flow is to be applied. One core that does a simple logical function is implemented to serve as a demonstration of Pilchard read and write operations. To demonstrate the versatility of the hardware platform, a complex core that performs a Fast Fourier Transform operation was also implemented successfully. Results from these IP implementations indicate that for high performance IP cores to be verified on the Pilchard, careful attention must be exercised to minimize the possible timing delay that occurs during place-and-route

In particular, problems related to circuits’ compliance with DO-254 in avionics and other industries are considered. Extensive literature review of the subject is given, including current views on and experiences of chip manufacturers and EDA industry with qualification of hardware design tools, including formal approaches to hardware verification.
