Projective-anticipating, projective, and projective-lag synchronization of time-delayed chaotic systems on random networks
We study projective-anticipating, projective, and projective-lag
synchronization of time-delayed chaotic systems on random networks. We relax
some limitations of previous work, where projective-anticipating and
projective-lag synchronization can be achieved only on two coupled chaotic
systems. In this paper, we can realize projective-anticipating and
projective-lag synchronization on complex dynamical networks composed by a
large number of interconnected components. At the same time, although previous
work studied projective synchronization on complex dynamical networks, the
dynamics of the nodes are coupled partially linear chaotic systems. In this
paper, the dynamics of the nodes of the complex networks are time-delayed
chaotic systems without the limitation of the partial-linearity. Based on the
Lyapunov stability theory, we suggest a generic method to achieve the
projective-anticipating, projective, and projective-lag synchronization of
time-delayed chaotic systems on random dynamical networks and find both the
existence and sufficient stability conditions. The validity of the proposed
method is demonstrated and verified by examining specific examples using Ikeda
and Mackey-Glass systems on Erdos-Renyi networks.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure
Enhancing synchronization in chaotic oscillators by induced heterogeneity
We report enhancing of complete synchronization in identical chaotic
oscillators when their interaction is mediated by a mismatched oscillator. The
identical oscillators now interact indirectly through the intermediate relay
oscillator. The induced heterogeneity in the intermediate oscillator plays a
constructive role in reducing the critical coupling for a transition to
complete synchronization. A common lag synchronization emerges between the
mismatched relay oscillator and its neighboring identical oscillators that
leads to this enhancing effect. We present examples of one-dimensional open
array, a ring, a star network and a two-dimensional lattice of dynamical
systems to demonstrate how this enhancing effect occurs. The paradigmatic
R\"ossler oscillator is used as a dynamical unit, in our numerical experiment,
for different networks to reveal the enhancing phenomenon.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure
Synchronization of chaotic networks with time-delayed couplings: An analytic study
Networks of nonlinear units with time-delayed couplings can synchronize to a
common chaotic trajectory. Although the delay time may be very large, the units
can synchronize completely without time shift. For networks of coupled
Bernoulli maps, analytic results are derived for the stability of the chaotic
synchronization manifold. For a single delay time, chaos synchronization is
related to the spectral gap of the coupling matrix. For networks with multiple
delay times, analytic results are obtained from the theory of polynomials.
Finally, the analytic results are compared with networks of iterated tent maps
and Lang-Kobayashi equations which imitate the behaviour of networks of
semiconductor lasers
Collective Almost Synchronization in Complex Networks
This work introduces the phenomenon of Collective Almost Synchronization
(CAS), which describes a universal way of how patterns can appear in complex
networks even for small coupling strengths. The CAS phenomenon appears due to
the existence of an approximately constant local mean field and is
characterized by having nodes with trajectories evolving around periodic stable
orbits. Common notion based on statistical knowledge would lead one to
interpret the appearance of a local constant mean field as a consequence of the
fact that the behavior of each node is not correlated to the behaviors of the
others. Contrary to this common notion, we show that various well known weaker
forms of synchronization (almost, time-lag, phase synchronization, and
generalized synchronization) appear as a result of the onset of an almost
constant local mean field. If the memory is formed in a brain by minimising the
coupling strength among neurons and maximising the number of possible patterns,
then the CAS phenomenon is a plausible explanation for it.Comment: 3 figure
Mechanisms of Zero-Lag Synchronization in Cortical Motifs
Zero-lag synchronization between distant cortical areas has been observed in
a diversity of experimental data sets and between many different regions of the
brain. Several computational mechanisms have been proposed to account for such
isochronous synchronization in the presence of long conduction delays: Of
these, the phenomenon of "dynamical relaying" - a mechanism that relies on a
specific network motif - has proven to be the most robust with respect to
parameter mismatch and system noise. Surprisingly, despite a contrary belief in
the community, the common driving motif is an unreliable means of establishing
zero-lag synchrony. Although dynamical relaying has been validated in empirical
and computational studies, the deeper dynamical mechanisms and comparison to
dynamics on other motifs is lacking. By systematically comparing
synchronization on a variety of small motifs, we establish that the presence of
a single reciprocally connected pair - a "resonance pair" - plays a crucial
role in disambiguating those motifs that foster zero-lag synchrony in the
presence of conduction delays (such as dynamical relaying) from those that do
not (such as the common driving triad). Remarkably, minor structural changes to
the common driving motif that incorporate a reciprocal pair recover robust
zero-lag synchrony. The findings are observed in computational models of
spiking neurons, populations of spiking neurons and neural mass models, and
arise whether the oscillatory systems are periodic, chaotic, noise-free or
driven by stochastic inputs. The influence of the resonance pair is also robust
to parameter mismatch and asymmetrical time delays amongst the elements of the
motif. We call this manner of facilitating zero-lag synchrony resonance-induced
synchronization, outline the conditions for its occurrence, and propose that it
may be a general mechanism to promote zero-lag synchrony in the brain.Comment: 41 pages, 12 figures, and 11 supplementary figure
Synchronization of unidirectional time delay chaotic networks and the greatest common divisor
We present the interplay between synchronization of unidirectional coupled
chaotic nodes with heterogeneous delays and the greatest common divisor (GCD)
of loops composing the oriented graph. In the weak chaos region and for GCD=1
the network is in chaotic zero-lag synchronization, whereas for GCD=m>1
synchronization of m-sublattices emerges. Complete synchronization can be
achieved when all chaotic nodes are influenced by an identical set of delays
and in particular for the limiting case of homogeneous delays. Results are
supported by simulations of chaotic systems, self-consistent and mixing
arguments, as well as analytical solutions of Bernoulli maps.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Synchronizing noisy nonidentical oscillators by transient uncoupling
Synchronization is the process of achieving identical dynamics among coupled
identical units. If the units are different from each other, their dynamics
cannot become identical; yet, after transients, there may emerge a functional
relationship between them -- a phenomenon termed "generalized synchronization."
Here, we show that the concept of transient uncoupling, recently introduced for
synchronizing identical units, also supports generalized synchronization among
nonidentical chaotic units. Generalized synchronization can be achieved by
transient uncoupling even when it is impossible by regular coupling. We
furthermore demonstrate that transient uncoupling stabilizes synchronization in
the presence of common noise. Transient uncoupling works best if the units stay
uncoupled whenever the driven orbit visits regions that are locally diverging
in its phase space. Thus, to select a favorable uncoupling region, we propose
an intuitive method that measures the local divergence at the phase points of
the driven unit's trajectory by linearizing the flow and subsequently
suppresses the divergence by uncoupling
