    Random trees in queueing systems with deadlines

    AbstractWe survey our research on scheduling aperiodic tasks in real-time systems in order to illustrate the benefits of modelling queueing systems by means of random trees. Relying on a discrete-time single-server queueing system, we investigated deadline meeting properties of several scheduling algorithms employed for servicing probabilistically arriving tasks, characterized by arbitrary arrival and execution time distributions and a constant service time deadline T. Taking a non-queueing theory approach (i.e., without stable-stable assumptions) we found that the probability distribution of the random time sT where such a system operates without violating any task's deadline is approximately exponential with parameter λT = 1μT, with the expectation E[sT] = μT growing exponentially in T. The value μT depends on the particular scheduling algorithm, and its derivation is based on the combinatorial and asymptotic analysis of certain random trees. This paper demonstrates that random trees provide an efficient common framework to deal with different scheduling disciplines and gives an overview of the various combinatorial and asymptotic methods used in the appropriate analysis

    The architectural basis for an advanced fault tolerant on-board computer to succeed the current generation of fault tolerant computers is examined. The network error tolerant system architecture is studied with particular attention to intercluster configurations and communication protocols, and to refined reliability estimates. The diagnosis of faults, so that appropriate choices for reconfiguration can be made is discussed. The analysis relates particularly to the recognition of transient faults in a system with tasks at many levels of priority. The demand driven data-flow architecture, which appears to have possible application in fault tolerant systems is described and work investigating the feasibility of automatic generation of aircraft flight control programs from abstract specifications is reported

    Performance analysis of priority queueing systems in discrete time

    The integration of different types of traffic in packet-based networks spawns the need for traffic differentiation. In this tutorial paper, we present some analytical techniques to tackle discrete-time queueing systems with priority scheduling. We investigate both preemptive (resume and repeat) and non-preemptive priority scheduling disciplines. Two classes of traffic are considered, high-priority and low-priority traffic, which both generate variable-length packets. A probability generating functions approach leads to performance measures such as moments of system contents and packet delays of both classes

    For a GI/GI/1 queue, we show that the average sojourn time under the (blind) Randomized Multilevel Feedback algorithm is no worse than that under the Shortest Remaining Processing Time algorithm times a logarithmic function of the system load. Moreover, it is verified that this bound is tight in heavy traffic, up to a constant multiplicative factor. We obtain this result by combining techniques from two disparate areas: competitive analysis and applied probability

    Discrete-time queueing models with priorities

    This PhD-dissertation contains analyses of several discrete-time two-class priority queueing systems. We analyze non-preemptive, preemptive resume as well as preemptive repeat priority queues. The analyses are heavily based on probability generating functions that allow us to calculate moments and tail probabilities of the system contents and packet delays of both classes. The results are applicable in heterogeneous telecommunication networks, when delay-sensitive traffic gets transmission priority over best-effort traffic. Our results predict the influence of priority scheduling on the QoS (Quality-of-Service) of the different types of traffic
