A design framework for enabling sustainability in the clothing sector
This article discusses general strategies to enable environmental sustainability within the clothing sector, providing a framework for decision makers involved in the development of programs and policies for this sector. It initially revises the environmental impact of the clothing system and determines its key environmental sustainability priorities. The framework involves five evolutionary strategies for enabling sustainable consumption and production: 1) environmental improvement of flows throughout the supply chain; 2) environmental redesign of existing clothes; 3) design of new clothes intrinsically more sustainable; 4) design of cloth-service systems and 5) promoting life styles towards sufficient consumption. The practical implications of each strategy is analysed based on correspondent ex-post-facto case studies identified in Brazil, using data collected through literature review and desktop research

LSS, a problem solving skill for graduates and SMEs: Case Study of investigation in a UK Business School curriculum
Purpose - This research aims to investigate the feasibility of a systematic Lean Six Sigma (LSS) education through the curriculum of business schools to respond to the existing gap between the graduate’s expectation of employability and skill requirements by the Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs).
Design/approach/methodology - One UK business school has been used as a case study to conduct an extensive module and programme review followed by a semi-structured interview with the potentially suitable core and programme-specific module leaders and also the comparative Analysis between content of these modules and the existing LSS high-street training themes.
Findings – The result revealed a high potential of the existing modules in the business schools equivalent to the private sector training providers to increase the level of LSS problem solving knowledge and skill for all graduates and improve their employability and productivity for the SMEs.
Practical implications/limitations – This research has been carried out in a single UK–based Business School through a qualitative approach. A further in-depth analysis in a broader scale is required to investigate the practical implications in a better way.
Originality/Value – The result of this study highlights the role of LSS to reduce the knowledge and skill gap between the business schools as the source of the explicit knowledge, graduates as the knowledge and skill bearer, and SMEs as the knowledge and skill users
Best Practices in Road Transport: An Exploratory Study
Purpose: Road transport aspects are becoming increasingly important due to their high impact on economic, environmental and social sustainability. Considering the triple bottom line approach, best practices play a fundamental role within organisations. The purpose of this paper is to analyse several sustainable initiatives in road transport adopted by companies. Design/methodology/approach: The findings were developed and evaluated based on empirical data captured through a survey of 98 professionals involved in logistics and transport activities. Additionally, key literature on transport initiatives was reviewed to supplement the framework for the implementation of best practices in road transport. Findings: The exploratory study shows the importance of each best practice and determines the level of implementation of each initiative, comparing the results among different dealers (retailers, wholesalers, carriers and manufacturers), type of transport fleet and companies’ revenues. Research limitations/implications: The sample of 98 companies was based on simple search filters and the group is not wholly representative of all sectors. Respondents were mainly managers from Spain involved in logistics and transport activities. Surveyed companies included manufacturing, retailers, wholesalers and third-party logistics providers. Practical implications: The most common best practices in road transport are identified, including initiatives related to: efficiency, reusability, safety, optimization, emissions, waste and recycling. Initiatives that influence road transport are ranked by their degree of implementation in the companies analysed. Social implications: Implementation of some of these best practices may help lessen negative impacts of road transport on society and the environment. Originality/value: The study results indicate which practices are most frequently used and their level of implementation depending on companies’ roles in the supply chain, revenues and types of transport fleet. By implementing the proposed best practices, companies will adopt sustainable behaviors to improve their transport performance.Peer Reviewe

This paper will present a literature review on companies’ practices of sustainability and this relationship with the Lean concept, if there is any. When this relationship is established, normally, it is coined as Lean-Green. In today´s highly competitive markets, with accelerating global development, the increasing resource use and environmental impacts, the business as usual is not a choice for a sustainable future. A true Lean company is a sustainable company by the Lean culture embed, that is “doing more with less”

Lean towards learning: connecting Lean Thinking and human resource management in UK higher education
From its origins in the automotive industry, Lean Thinking is increasingly being seen as a solution to problems of efficiency and quality in other industries and sectors. In recent years attempts have been made to transfer Lean principles and practice to the higher education sector with indications of mixed consequences and debate over its suitability. This paper contributes to the debate by drawing evidence from thirty-four interviews conducted across two UK universities that have implemented Lean in some of their activities and we pay particular attention to the role of the HR function in facilitating its introduction. The findings suggest there are problems in understanding, communicating and transferring Lean Thinking in the higher education context; that, despite HR systems being vital facets of Lean, HR professionals are excluded from participation; and that as a consequence the depth and breadth of Lean application in the two institutions is very limited
Towards an Integration of the Lean Enterprise System, Total Quality Management, Six Sigma and Related Enterprise Process Improvement Methods
The lean enterprise system, total quality management, six sigma, theory of constraints, agile manufacturing,
and business process reengineering have been introduced as universally applicable best methods to improve the
performance of enterprise operations through continuous process improvement and systemic planned enterprise change.
Generally speaking, they represent practice-based, rather than theory-grounded, methods with common roots in
manufacturing. Most of the literature on them is descriptive and prescriptive, aimed largely at a practitioner audience.
Despite certain differences among them, they potentially complement each other in important ways. The lean enterprise
system, total quality management and six sigma, in particular, are tightly interconnected as highly complementary
approaches and can be brought together to define a first-approximation “core” integrated management system, with the
lean enterprise system serving as the central organizing framework. Specific elements of the other approaches can be
selectively incorporated into the “core” enterprise system to enrich its effectiveness. Concrete theoretical and
computational developments in the future through an interdisciplinary research agenda centered on the design and
development of networked enterprises as complex adaptive socio-technical systems, as well as the creation of a readily
accessible observatory of evidence-based management practices, would represent important steps forward
Ergonomic Redesign Model to reduce musculoskeletal disorders in a cluster of SMEs in the clothing accessories sector
The Peruvian manufacturing industry is one of high impact in Latin America with excellent quality materials and massive productive quantities making it an important industry for the country itself. Even so, with this sector being so significant, the prevalence rate of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) remains high for companies with little capital and no investment capacity, such being the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) of the industry. Either due to mishandling of machinery or repetitiveness of labor, musculoskeletal disorders are a prevalent problem for manufacturing industries with little to no information on ergonomic ways of control as well as having a Lean focus to add value to the process. This paper seeks to find the validity of a model to reduce absenteeism and exposure to musculoskeletal disorders using ergonomic and Lean tools to promote safe practices and the preservation of health in turn with work productivity on SMEs from the clothing accessory sector. This model was able to reduce exposure to MSDs by 67.27% and reduced the company's absenteeism rate by 52.85% getting to considering levels for industry standards and validating the effectiveness of similar models
