    A self-mobile skeleton in the presence of external loads

    Multicore clusters provide cost-effective platforms for running CPU-intensive and data-intensive parallel applications. To effectively utilise these platforms, sharing their resources is needed amongst the applications rather than dedicated environments. When such computational platforms are shared, user applications must compete at runtime for the same resource so the demand is irregular and hence the load is changeable and unpredictable. This thesis explores a mechanism to exploit shared multicore clusters taking into account the external load. This mechanism seeks to reduce runtime by finding the best computing locations to serve the running computations. We propose a generic algorithmic data-parallel skeleton which is aware of its computations and the load state of the computing environment. This skeleton is structured using the Master/Worker pattern where the master and workers are distributed on the nodes of the cluster. This skeleton divides the problem into computations where all these computations are initiated by the master and coordinated by the distributed workers. Moreover, the skeleton has built-in mobility to implicitly move the parallel computations between two workers. This mobility is data mobility controlled by the application, the skeleton. This skeleton is not problem-specific and therefore it is able to execute different kinds of problems. Our experiments suggest that this skeleton is able to efficiently compensate for unpredictable load variations. We also propose a performance cost model that estimates the continuation time of the running computations locally and remotely. This model also takes the network delay, data size and the load state as inputs to estimate the transfer time of the potential movement. Our experiments demonstrate that this model takes accurate decisions based on estimates in different load patterns to reduce the total execution time. This model is problem-independent because it considers the progress of all current computations. Moreover, this model is based on measurements so it is not dependent on the programming language. Furthermore, this model takes into account the load state of the nodes on which the computation run. This state includes the characteristics of the nodes and hence this model is architecture-independent. Because the scheduling has direct impact on system performance, we support the skeleton with a cost-informed scheduler that uses a hybrid scheduling policy to improve the dynamicity and adaptivity of the skeleton. This scheduler has agents distributed over the participating workers to keep the load information up to date, trigger the estimations, and facilitate the mobility operations. On runtime, the skeleton co-schedules its computations over computational resources without interfering with the native operating system scheduler. We demonstrate that using a hybrid approach the system makes mobility decisions which lead to improved performance and scalability over large number of computational resources. Our experiments suggest that the adaptivity of our skeleton in shared environment improves the performance and reduces resource contention on nodes that are heavily loaded. Therefore, this adaptivity allows other applications to acquire more resources. Finally, our experiments show that the load scheduler has a low incurred overhead, not exceeding 0.6%, compared to the total execution time

    Support for flexible and transparent distributed computing

    Modern distributed computing developed from the traditional supercomputing community rooted firmly in the culture of batch management. Therefore, the field has been dominated by queuing-based resource managers and work flow based job submission environments where static resource demands needed be determined and reserved prior to launching executions. This has made it difficult to support resource environments (e.g. Grid, Cloud) where the available resources as well as the resource requirements of applications may be both dynamic and unpredictable. This thesis introduces a flexible execution model where the compute capacity can be adapted to fit the needs of applications as they change during execution. Resource provision in this model is based on a fine-grained, self-service approach instead of the traditional one-time, system-level model. The thesis introduces a middleware based Application Agent (AA) that provides a platform for the applications to dynamically interact and negotiate resources with the underlying resource infrastructure. We also consider the issue of transparency, i.e., hiding the provision and management of the distributed environment. This is the key to attracting public to use the technology. The AA not only replaces user-controlled process of preparing and executing an application with a transparent software-controlled process, it also hides the complexity of selecting right resources to ensure execution QoS. This service is provided by an On-line Feedback-based Automatic Resource Configuration (OAC) mechanism cooperating with the flexible execution model. The AA constantly monitors utility-based feedbacks from the application during execution and thus is able to learn its behaviour and resource characteristics. This allows it to automatically compose the most efficient execution environment on the fly and satisfy any execution requirements defined by users. Two policies are introduced to supervise the information learning and resource tuning in the OAC. The Utility Classification policy classifies hosts according to their historical performance contributions to the application. According to this classification, the AA chooses high utility hosts and withdraws low utility hosts to configure an optimum environment. The Desired Processing Power Estimation (DPPE) policy dynamically configures the execution environment according to the estimated desired total processing power needed to satisfy users’ execution requirements. Through the introducing of flexibility and transparency, a user is able to run a dynamic/normal distributed application anywhere with optimised execution performance, without managing distributed resources. Based on the standalone model, the thesis further introduces a federated resource negotiation framework as a step forward towards an autonomous multi-user distributed computing world

    Building Scalable and Consistent Distributed Databases Under Conflicts

    Distributed databases, which rely on redundant and distributed storage across multiple servers, are able to provide mission-critical data management services at large scale. Parallelism is the key to the scalability of distributed databases, but concurrent queries having conflicts may block or abort each other when strong consistency is enforced using rigorous concurrency control protocols. This thesis studies the techniques of building scalable distributed databases under strong consistency guarantees even in the face of high contention workloads. The techniques proposed in this thesis share a common idea, conflict mitigation, meaning mitigating conflicts by rescheduling operations in the concurrency control in the first place instead of resolving contending conflicts. Using this idea, concurrent queries under conflicts can be executed with high parallelism. This thesis explores this idea on both databases that support serializable ACID (atomic, consistency, isolation, durability) transactions, and eventually consistent NoSQL systems. First, the epoch-based concurrency control (ECC) technique is proposed in ALOHA-KV, a new distributed key-value store that supports high performance read-only and write-only distributed transactions. ECC demonstrates that concurrent serializable distributed transactions can be processed in parallel with low overhead even under high contention. With ECC, a new atomic commitment protocol is developed that only requires amortized one round trip for a distributed write-only transaction to commit in the absence of failures. Second, a novel paradigm of serializable distributed transaction processing is developed to extend ECC with read-write transaction processing support. This paradigm uses a newly proposed database operator, functors, which is a placeholder for the value of a key, which can be computed asynchronously in parallel with other functor computations of the same or other transactions. Functor-enabled ECC achieves more fine-grained concurrency control than transaction level concurrency control, and it never aborts transactions due to read-write or write-write conflicts but allows transactions to fail due to logic errors or constraint violations while guaranteeing serializability. Lastly, this thesis explores consistency in the eventually consistent system, Apache Cassandra, for an investigation of the consistency violation, referred to as "consistency spikes". This investigation shows that the consistency spikes exhibited by Cassandra are strongly correlated with garbage collection, particularly the "stop-the-world" phase in the Java virtual machine. Thus, delaying read operations arti cially at servers immediately after a garbage collection pause can virtually eliminate these spikes. All together, these techniques allow distributed databases to provide scalable and consistent storage service

    Conformance Checking and Simulation-based Evolutionary Optimization for Deployment and Reconfiguration of Software in the Cloud

    Many SaaS providers nowadays want to leverage the cloud's capabilities also for their existing applications, for example, to enable sound scalability and cost-effectiveness. This thesis provides the approach CloudMIG that supports SaaS providers to migrate those applications to IaaS and PaaS-based cloud environments. CloudMIG consists of a step-by-step process and focuses on two core components. (1) Restrictions imposed by specific cloud environments (so-called cloud environment constraints (CECs)), such as a limited file system access or forbidden method calls, can be validated by an automatic conformance checking approach. (2) A cloud deployment option (CDO) determines which cloud environment, cloud resource types, deployment architecture, and runtime reconfiguration rules for exploiting a cloud's elasticity should be used. The implied performance and costs can differ in orders of magnitude. CDOs can be automatically optimized with the help of our simulation-based genetic algorithm CDOXplorer. Extensive lab experiments and an experiment in an industrial context show CloudMIG's applicability and the excellent performance of its two core components
