    Break up of heavy fermions at an antiferromagnetic instability

    We present results of high-resolution, low-temperature measurements of the Hall coefficient, thermopower, and specific heat on stoichiometric YbRh2Si2. They support earlier conclusions of an electronic (Kondo-breakdown) quantum critical point concurring with a field induced antiferromagnetic one. We also discuss the detachment of the two instabilities under chemical pressure. Volume compression/expansion (via substituting Rh by Co/Ir) results in a stabilization/weakening of magnetic order. Moderate Ir substitution leads to a non-Fermi-liquid phase, in which the magnetic moments are neither ordered nor screened by the Kondo effect. The so-derived zero-temperature global phase diagram promises future studies to explore the nature of the Kondo breakdown quantum critical point without any interfering magnetism.Comment: minor changes, accepted for publication in JPS

    Galactic Cosmic Ray Origins and OB Associations: Evidence from SuperTIGER Observations of Elements 26_{26}Fe through 40_{40}Zr

    We report abundances of elements from 26_{26}Fe to 40_{40}Zr in the cosmic radiation measured by the SuperTIGER (Trans-Iron Galactic Element Recorder) instrument during 55 days of exposure on a long-duration balloon flight over Antarctica. These observations resolve elemental abundances in this charge range with single-element resolution and good statistics. These results support a model of cosmic-ray origin in which the source material consists of a mixture of 196+11^{+11}_{-6}\% material from massive stars and \sim81\% normal interstellar medium (ISM) material with solar system abundances. The results also show a preferential acceleration of refractory elements (found in interstellar dust grains) by a factor of \sim4 over volatile elements (found in interstellar gas) ordered by atomic mass (A).     Resolved Spectroscopy of Gravitationally-Lensed Galaxies: Recovering Coherent Velocity Fields in Sub-Luminous z~2-3 Galaxies

    We present spatially-resolved dynamics for six strongly lensed star-forming galaxies at z=1.7-3.1, each enlarged by a linear magnification factor ~8. Using the Keck laser guide star AO system and the OSIRIS integral field unit spectrograph we resolve kinematic and morphological detail in our sample with an unprecedented fidelity, in some cases achieving spatial resolutions of ~100 pc. With one exception our sources have diameters ranging from 1-7 kpc, star formation rates of 2-40 Msun/yr (uncorrected for extinction) and dynamical masses of 10^(9.7-10.3) Msun. With this exquisite resolution we find that four of the six galaxies display coherent velocity fields consistent with a simple rotating disk model, which can only be recovered with the considerably improved spatial resolution and sampling from the combination of adaptive optics and strong gravitational lensing. Our model fits imply ratios for the systemic to random motion, V sin(i)/sigma, ranging from 0.5-1.3 and Toomre disk parameters Q<1. The large fraction of well-ordered velocity fields in our sample is consistent with data analyzed for larger, more luminous sources at this redshift. Our high resolution data further reveal that all six galaxies contain multiple giant star-forming HII regions whose resolved diameters are in the range 300 pc - 1.0 kpc, consistent with the Jeans length expected in the case of dispersion support. The density of star formation in these regions is ~100 times higher than observed in local spirals; such high values are only seen in the most luminous local starbursts. The global dynamics and demographics of star formation in these HII regions suggest that vigorous star formation is primarily governed by gravitational instability in primitive rotating disks.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, submitted to MNRA

    Giant photoinduced lattice distortion in oxygen-vacancy ordered SrCoO2.5 thin films

    Despite of the tremendous efforts spent on the oxygen vacancy migration in determining the property optimization of oxygen-vacancy enrichment transition metal oxides, few has focused on their dynamic behaviors non-equilibrium states. In this work, we performed multi-timescale ultrafast X-ray diffraction measurements by using picosecond synchrotron X-ray pulses and femtosecond table-top X-ray pulses to monitor the structural dynamics in the oxygen-vacancy ordered SrCoO2.5 thin films. A giant photoinduced strain ({\Delta}c/c > 1%) was observed, whose distinct correlation with the pump photon energy indicates a non-thermal origin of the photoinduced strain. The sub-picosecond resolution X-ray diffraction reveals the formation and propagation of the coherent acoustic phonons inside the film. We also simulate the effect of photoexcited electron-hole pairs and the resulting lattice changes using the Density Function Theory method to obtain further insight on the microscopic mechanism of the measured photostriction effect. Comparable photostrictive responses and the strong dependence on excitation wavelength are predicted, revealing a bonding to anti-bonding charge transfer or high spin to intermediate spin crossover induced lattice expansion in the oxygen-vacancy films.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, support materia

    Dealing with inconsistent judgments in multiple criteria sorting models.

    Sorting models consist in assigning alternatives evaluated on several criteria to ordered categories. To implement such models it is necessary to set the values of the preference parameters used in the model. Rather than fixing the values of these parameters directly, a usual approach is to infer these values from assignment examples provided by the decision maker (DM), i.e., alternatives for which (s)he specifies a required category. However, assignment examples provided by DMs can be inconsistent, i.e., may not match the sorting model. In such situations, it is necessary to support the DMs in the resolution of this inconsistency. In this paper, we extend algorithms from Mousseau et al.(2003) that calculate different ways to remove assignment examples so that the information can be represented in the sorting model. The extension concerns the possibility to relax (rather than to delete) assignment examples. These algorithms incorporate information about the confidence attached to each assignment example, hence providing inconsistency resolutions that the DMs are most likely to accept.Multicriteria decision aiding; Inconsistency analysis; Sorting problem;

    Interaction of toxic and non-toxic HypF-N oligomers with lipid bilayers investigated at high resolution with atomic force microscopy

    Protein misfolded oligomers are considered the most toxic species amongst those formed in the process of amyloid formation and the molecular basis of their toxicity, although not completely understood, is thought to originate from the interaction with the cellular membrane. Here, we sought to highlight the molecular determinants of oligomer-membrane interaction by atomic force microscopy. We monitored the interaction between multiphase supported lipid bilayers and two types of HypF-N oligomers displaying different structural features and cytotoxicities. By our approach we imaged with unprecedented resolution the ordered and disordered lipid phases of the bilayer and different oligomer structures interacting with either phase. We identified the oligomers and lipids responsible for toxicity and, more generally, we established the importance of the membrane lipid component in mediating oligomer toxicity. Our findings support the importance of GM1 ganglioside in mediating the oligomer-bilayer interaction and support a mechanism of oligomer cytotoxicity involving bilayer destabilization by globular oligomers within GM1-rich ordered raft regions rather than by annular oligomers in the surrounding disordered membrane domains

    An analysis of the morphology and preservation of a part of the Roman Aqueduct of Tongeren (prov. of Limburg) using Lidar measurements and erosion modelling. Between 2000 and 2004 the Flemish government ordered the creation of the so-called DTM-Flanders, mainly to support Flanders flood prevention policy. The DTM, based on lidar data, is available for the whole of Flanders, with a resolution of one measure point per 20 m². This article discusses the use of this instrument and a number of derivative products (water-, tillageand combined erosion models, flow accumulation modelling), combined with other geodata (aerial photographs, soil map) and earlier archaeological observations, for the evaluation of the preservation of the Roman aqueduct of Tongeren
