    Studying the impact of CI on pull request delivery time in open source projects - a conceptual replication

    Nowadays, continuous integration (CI) is indispensable in the software development process. A central promise of adopting CI is that new features or bug fixes can be delivered more quickly. A recent repository mining study by Bernardo, da\ua0Costa & Kulesza (2018) found that only about half of the investigated open source projects actually deliver pull requests (PR) faster after adopting CI, with small effect sizes. However, there are some concerns regarding the methodology used by Bernardo et al., which may potentially limit the trustworthiness of this finding. Particularly, they do not explicitly control for normal changes in the pull request delivery time during a project’s lifetime (independently of CI introduction). Hence, in our work, we conduct a conceptual replication of this study. In a first step, we replicate their study results using the same subjects and methodology. In a second step, we address the same core research question using an adapted methodology. We use a different statistical method (regression discontinuity design, RDD) that is more robust towards the confounding factor of projects potentially getting faster in delivering PRs over time naturally, and we introduce a control group of comparable projects that never applied CI. Finally, we also evaluate the generalizability of the original findings on a set of new open source projects sampled using the same methodology. We find that the results of the study by Bernardo et al. largely hold in our replication. Using RDD, we do not find robust evidence of projects getting faster at delivering PRs without CI, and we similarly do not see a speed-up in our control group that never introduced CI. Further, results obtained from a newly mined set of projects are comparable to the original findings. In conclusion, we consider the replication successful

    Investigating the Impact of Continuous Integration Practices on the Productivity and Quality of Open-Source Projects

    Background: Much research has been conducted to investigate the impact of Continuous Integration (CI) on the productivity and quality of open-source projects. Most of studies have analyzed the impact of adopting a CI server service (e.g, Travis-CI) but did not analyze CI sub-practices. Aims: We aim to evaluate the impact of five CI sub-practices with respect to the productivity and quality of GitHub open-source projects. Method: We collect CI sub-practices of 90 relevant open-source projects for a period of 2 years. We use regression models to analyze whether projects upholding the CI sub-practices are more productive and/or generate fewer bugs. We also perform a qualitative document analysis to understand whether CI best practices are related to a higher quality of projects. Results: Our findings reveal a correlation between the Build Activity and Commit Activity sub-practices and the number of merged pull requests. We also observe a correlation between the Build Activity, Build Health and Time to Fix Broken Builds sub-practices and number of bug-related issues. The qualitative analysis reveals that projects with the best values for CI sub-practices face fewer CI-related problems compared to projects that exhibit the worst values for CI sub-practices.     A Framework of DevSecOps for Software Development Teams

    This master's thesis explores a broad evaluation of automated security testing in the context of DevOps practices. The primary objective of this study is to propose a framework that facilitates the seamless integration of security scanning tools within DevOps practices. The thesis will focus on examining the existing set of tools and their effective integration into fully automated DevOps CI/CD pipelines. The thesis starts by examining the theoretical concepts of DevOps and provides guidelines for integrating security within DevOps methodologies. Furthermore, it assesses the current state of security by analysing the OWASP Web API top 10 security vulnerability list and evaluating existing security automation tools. Additionally, the research investigates the performance and efficacy of these tools across various stages of the SDLC and investigates ongoing research and development activities. A fully automated DevOps CI/CD pipeline is implemented to integrate security scanning tools, enforcing complete security checks throughout the SDLC. Azure DevOps build and release pipelines, along with Snyk, were used to create a comprehensive automated security scanning framework. The study considerably investigates the integration of these security scanning tools and assesses their influence on the overall security posture of the developed applications. The finding of the study reveals that security scanning tools can be efficiently integrated into fully automated DevOps practices. Based on the results, recommendations are provided for the selection of suitable tools and techniques to achieve a DevSecOps practice. In conclusion, this thesis provides valuable insights into security integration in DevOps practices, highlighting the effectiveness of security automation tools. The research also recommends areas for further improvements to meet the industry's evolving requirements

    Nüüdisaegses tarkvaraarenduses kasutatakse avatud lähtekoodiga tarkvara komponente, et vähendada korratava töö hulka. Tarkvaraarendajad lisavad vaba lähtekoodiga komponente oma projektidesse, omamata ülevaadet kasutatud komponentide arendamisest ja hooldamisest. Selle töö eesmärk on analüüsida tarkvaraprojektide vearaporteid ja sõltuvuste haldamist ning arendada välja kohased meetodid. Tarkvaraprojektides kasutatakse töö organiseerimiseks veahaldussüsteeme, mille abil hallatakse tööülesandeid, vearaporteid ja uusi kasutajanõudeid. Enamat kui 4000 avatud lähtekoodiga projekti analüüsides selgus, et paljud vearaportid jäävad pikaks ajaks lahendamata. Muu hulgas võib nii ka mõni kriitiline turvaviga parandamata jääda. Doktoritöös arendatakse välja meetod, mis võimaldab automaatselt hinnata vearaporti lahendamiseks kuluvat aega. Meetod põhineb veahaldussüsteemi talletunud andmete analüüsil. Vearaporti eluaja hindamine aitab projektiosalistel prioriseerida tööülesandeid ja planeerida ressursse. Töö teises osas uuritakse, kuidas avatud lähtekoodiga projektide koodis kolmanda poole komponente kasutatakse. Tarkvaraarendajad kasutavad varem väljaarendatud komponente, et kiirendada arendust ja vähendada korratava töö hulka. Samamoodi kasutavad spetsiifilised komponendid veel omakorda teisi komponente, misläbi moodustub komponentide vaheliste seoste kaudu sõltuvuslik võrgustik. Selles doktoritöös analüüsitakse sõltuvuste võrgustikku populaarsete programmeerimiskeelte näidetel. Töö käigus arendatud meetod on rakendatav sõltuvuste võrgustiku struktuuri ja kasvu analüüsimiseks. Töös demonstreeritakse, kuidas võrgustiku struktuuri analüüsi abil saab hinnata tarkvaraprojektide riski hõlmata sõltuvusahela kaudu mõni turvaviga. Doktoritöös arendatud meetodid ja tulemused aitavad avatud lähtekoodiga projektide vearaportite ja tehniliste sõltuvuste haldamise praktikat läbipaistvamaks muuta.Modern software development relies on open-source software to facilitate reuse and reduce redundant work. Software developers use open-source packages in their projects without having insights into how these components are being developed and maintained. The aim of this thesis is to develop approaches for analyzing issue and dependency management in software projects. Software projects organize their work with issue trackers, tools for tracking issues such as development tasks, bug reports, and feature requests. By analyzing issue handling in more than 4,000 open-source projects, we found that many issues are left open for long periods of time, which can result in bugs and vulnerabilities not being fixed in a timely manner. This thesis proposes a method for predicting the amount of time it takes to resolve an issue by using the historical data available in issue trackers. Methods for predicting issue lifetime can help software project managers to prioritize issues and allocate resources accordingly. Another problem studied in this thesis is how software dependencies are used. Software developers often include third-party open-source software packages in their project code as a dependency. The included dependencies can also have their own dependencies. A complex network of dependency relationships exists among open-source software packages. This thesis analyzes the structure and the evolution of dependency networks of three popular programming languages. We propose an approach to measure the growth and the evolution of dependency networks. This thesis demonstrates that dependency network analysis can quantify what is the likelihood of acquiring vulnerabilities through software packages and how it changes over time. The approaches and findings developed here could help to bring transparency into open-source projects with respect to how issues are handled, or dependencies are updated
