Conceptual Design Support Tool for Subsea Equipment
Conceptual design is the most critical phase of product design and development process. It is the stage where major decisions are made by which will have an impact on the latter stage of design and related manufacturing processes. A tool called Conceptual Design Support Tool (CDST) had been developed to assist designers during conceptual design process. The overall goal of this project is to enhance the current CDST knowledge base. The enhancement will focus on product design in oil and gas domain particularly subsea equipment. In order to achieve this goal, the project will involves familiarization of CDST, study on subsea equipment, expanding CDST knowledge base and demonstration of the enhanced CDST. The enhancements of the CDST are important because the conceptual design can be perform more efficiently as the knowledge base expanded. The knowledge base expansion can also preserve expert's knowledge and train novice designer with the available design concept inside the knowledge base. Towards this goal, design concept for subsea separation system have been collected and stored inside the CDST knowledge base. These design concepts are generated based on the functional decomposition of the subsea separation system

METHOD FOR REFERENCE-BASED MANUFACTURING COST ESTIMATION â EVALUATION STUDY USING A PROTOTYPE
Within product development, manufacturing cost estimation provides a sound basis for design and management decisions. This secures companies profitability, but the effort is high and deep knowledge at the interface of design, manufacturing and costs is needed. These issues can be eased with automation enabled by semantic technologies. Therefore, the authors developed a method for reference-based manufacturing cost estimation and created a prototype. This research evaluates the method and the prototype. Observation, interview and questionnaire were conducted with ten experienced cost engineers at a large German manufacturing company.
Based on its results, the study shows the methods contribution to lower estimation effort, while the impact on transparency and the knowledge base was only partly verified. The method steps show different automation potential, so an incremental automation should be considered. Even though semantic technologies show high potential for identifying reference system elements in this study, the limiting factor for automation in manufacturing cost estimation remains the low availability of product and manufacturing information and missing knowledge of its connection within product development
Models of Furniture Design Using Coconut Wood Based on Local Culture for Global and Domestic Market
This study provides, for creative industries, a convenient overview of
a process that is still rarely used. This study aims to provide a model
of furniture design and production that can compete with the
growth of furniture exports and market demand. Demand is
increasing for furniture that is not mass-produced and is based on
local culture. The design thinking approach was used to produce
this model. This process consists of several steps, such as the study
of references, group discussions with expert participants and the
exploration and development of design products by students; the
products are based on local culture with coconut wood as the main
material. This research improves upon previous models. Building a
knowledge base in the initial phase was very important and
involved the identification and extraction of local resources. This
phase needs to be supported by experiential activities of âdiggingâ
to extract design boundaries, along with other activities involving
the transformation of ideas into visual schemes as sources of design
inspiration. This phase is then followed by interpretation and
execution, including feasibility tests of the design product
Modeling for effective computer support to MEMS product development
Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are miniaturized devices with high functionality. In recent years, MEMS products have become increasingly dominant in every aspect of the commercial market place. As the MEMS technology is in its infant stage and has several unique features compared to macro-scale products, it is faced with several challenges. One of them is that design and fabrication knowledge is very intrigue and thus very difficult to be accessible. An effective computer support to the MEMS product development is thus very important. This thesis study undertakes a thorough investigation into the MEMS product development process and its computer support. Specifically, the study examines the state-of-the-art in computer aided design systems in light of the support of product functionality. It is shown that MEMS product development involves high degree of uncertainty, which calls for an unconventional computer support. At this point, this study proposes an approach to construct a knowledge base in a fairly flexible and real-time manner. This approach is based on the extended function-behavior-structure framework and the template technique proposed in this thesis. The other finding is that the MEMS product development resembles the one-of-a-kind product (OKP) development. Therefore software tools for the OKP product development process can be applied to the MEMS product development process. These tools are examined, and further extensions upon them are proposed. Throughout the thesis, a microdispensing system is used as an example for illustration of concepts described in this thesis
An explorative study of knowledge transfer processes in new product development in the automotive industry
This research builds on three projects that aim to investigate how knowledge transfer takes place in new product development in the automotive industry. The study seeks to picture how product development teams frame and shape new product knowledge, how they interpret such knowledge, and how they apply knowledge to the product development process. From that perspective, product development activities can be seen as transactions that are integrated into an overall system of identifying, assessing, collecting and combining knowledge. Results of my research so far reveal that there are many factors that affect the successful management of knowledge transfer in new product development projects. Based on my first two projects, using the case study approach, it is evident that for successful knowledge transfer to occur, there is a need to distinguish between design knowledge that is embedded in the tacit knowledge domain and that embedded in the or explicit design knowledge domain. The results of project three, using a survey questionnaire approach, provide a powerful demonstration, that knowledge integration, combination and creation in product development need intensive interaction and collaboration. The enormous importance of interaction and collaboration to integrate and combine knowledge has its origin in the nature of design knowledge. For example engineers produced in the survey a 82 % rate of agreement with the statement that they use mainly knowledge that comes from their past work experience as product developers, in order to solve complex design tasks. The underlying assumption of this finding is, that engineers are therefore mostly forced to transfer tacit design knowledge to solve complex design tasks. The research showed that a remarkable under-performance exists in knowledge identification and knowledge articulation in new product development in the automotive industry. In vehicle development, non-routine tasks are highly complex. This requires team members to have an understanding of the complete product system architecture. To create such an understanding, engineers need to identify and articulate knowledge. These activities can be seen as a pre-knowledge creation. The result is a shared product knowledge base, which makes it possible for people engaged in the vehicle development process to use different kinds of knowledge to capture and link new technologies into innovative products. This may require a cultural shift by vehicle manufacturers in terms of how they steer and allocate resources to future vehicle development programmes. Building on four years engagement with knowledge transfer research, I conclude that organisations in the automotive sector still rely on methods and processes that were successful in the past and strictly directed at exploiting tangible assets. To integrate preknowledge creation, as a new found discipline in product development projects creates an enormous potential to integrate and combine knowledge in an efficient way for future product development projects.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

Requirement driven knowledge management system design to support automotive product development
Nowadays, New Product Development (NPD) has become a business priority in manufacturing companies due to international competition in terms of meeting higher and changing customer requirements, generating high profit at low cost, and maintaining sustainable development and growth. Through literature review and industrial investigations, it has been recognised that NPD is an information and knowledge intensive process. However, in current practice, enterprise knowledge is not properly managed or easily accessible. Many service providers have not followed the good practice of considering business objectives and end usersâ requirements as main drivers of knowledge management system development and implementation.
This doctoral thesis presents a methodology for the design and development of Knowledge Management (KM) systems to support NPD based on Enterprise Architecture Frameworks (EAFs). The project focuses on IT system specifications
generation driven by business and knowledge usersâ requirements in the automotive industry. Current EAFs have been developed by researchers and practitioners to help enterprises to design their information systems based on business objectives and user requirements. However, these frameworks are mainly proposed to manage information and data such as finances, resources, management and engineering
documents, not for the increasingly important enterprise knowledge, especially tacit and unstructured knowledge.
This project aims to extend the capabilities of the latest enterprise architecture frameworks so that not only data and information, but also enterprise knowledge can be managed. A guideline in the form of a flowchart has been developed, which provides a process that can be followed and used by system developers and implementation. The extended EAF has been implemented as easy-to-use folders for the development of a structured knowledge base. A case study in an automotive company proved that the methodology can be used to produce the functional specifications of their IT systems to include knowledge management capability. The system specification can then be used, either to assess a companyâs existing information systems and direct its future system development and implementation; or to develop/implement a complete new information system from scratch
Reframing the value of virtual prototyping: Intermediary virtual prototyping - the evolving approach of virtual environments based virtual prototyping in the context of new product development and low volume production
This thesis studies how the evolving approach of virtual environments-based virtual prototyping can be evaluated in the context of product design and development in the manufacturing industry. The entry point for this research is the relatively long experience in applied research in virtual prototyping with industry. As the virtual prototyping technology has become more mature, the focus of research and development has extended from technology demonstrations towards utilization in product design and development processes. However, lack of scientific and practical knowledge of real benefits and the value of virtual prototyping has seemed to be a deterrent to its wider adoption of industry. The aim of this thesis is by means of scientific research to increase the knowledge of the value contribution of virtual prototyping as well as its impacts in a practical industrial context. This problem was approached from the science base by formulating an expanded theory framework for value modelling, and from the problem base by an empirical case study in one manufacturing company. The research approach was constructive and exploratory. The research results consist of three types of knowledge. Firstly, the scientific theoretical foundation was elaborated for initiating value modelling of virtual prototyping and virtual environments. Secondly, new knowledge on the value of virtual prototyping within new product development was created in an industrial case study. Finally, knowledge on how virtual prototyping (VP) impacts the company was reported. The impact was discussed in the dimensions of process, social and technological implications. This research contributed to engineering design science by conceptualizing virtual prototyping in the context of product design and development expanding to the dimensions of human factors and management theory. Thus, the contribution is also manifested by constructing the expanded theory framework for virtual prototyping value modelling in four dimensions with causal justification from virtual reality technology to business value elements which led to the new concept of Intermediary Virtual Prototyping (IVP). The discussed concept of IVP underscores the many layers from technical advantages of virtual reality to the expanded mediating object of product development activity system. The discussion was carried on from the perspective of a partially configurable products and manual work-intensive variant production mode. This perspective is novel compared to the majority of virtual prototyping and virtual environments literature. It is proposed that IVP is particularly beneficial in this context, where human skills and knowledge contribute to the flexibility of production system.IVP should be considered as a strategic investment that will produce income in the long run. IVP contributes to the co-creation and variant production paradigms by involving human creativity at an early product design and development phase, thus increasing flexibility. IVP creates value in use, but in turn it impacts the company in all the four dimensions mentioned
