    Near-Surface Interface Detection for Coal Mining Applications Using Bispectral Features and GPR

    The use of ground penetrating radar (GPR) for detecting the presence of near-surface interfaces is a scenario of special interest to the underground coal mining industry. The problem is difficult to solve in practice because the radar echo from the near-surface interface is often dominated by unwanted components such as antenna crosstalk and ringing, ground-bounce effects, clutter, and severe attenuation. These nuisance components are also highly sensitive to subtle variations in ground conditions, rendering the application of standard signal pre-processing techniques such as background subtraction largely ineffective in the unsupervised case. As a solution to this detection problem, we develop a novel pattern recognition-based algorithm which utilizes a neural network to classify features derived from the bispectrum of 1D early time radar data. The binary classifier is used to decide between two key cases, namely whether an interface is within, for example, 5 cm of the surface or not. This go/no-go detection capability is highly valuable for underground coal mining operations, such as longwall mining, where the need to leave a remnant coal section is essential for geological stability. The classifier was trained and tested using real GPR data with ground truth measurements. The real data was acquired from a testbed with coal-clay, coal-shale and shale-clay interfaces, which represents a test mine site. We show that, unlike traditional second order correlation based methods such as matched filtering which can fail even in known conditions, the new method reliably allows the detection of interfaces using GPR to be applied in the near-surface region. In this work, we are not addressing the problem of depth estimation, rather confining ourselves to detecting an interface within a particular depth range

    Optical Communication System for Remote Monitoring and Adaptive Control of Distributed Ground Sensors Exhibiting Collective Intelligence

    Comprehensive management of the battle-space has created new requirements in information management, communication, and interoperability as they effect surveillance and situational awareness. The objective of this proposal is to expand intelligent controls theory to produce a uniquely powerful implementation of distributed ground-based measurement incorporating both local collective behavior, and interoperative global optimization for sensor fusion and mission oversight. By using a layered hierarchal control architecture to orchestrate adaptive reconfiguration of autonomous robotic agents, we can improve overall robustness and functionality in dynamic tactical environments without information bottlenecks. In this concept, each sensor is equipped with a miniaturized optical reflectance modulator which is interactively monitored as a remote transponder using a covert laser communication protocol from a remote mothership or operative. Robot data-sharing at the ground level can be leveraged with global evaluation criteria, including terrain overlays and remote imaging data. Information sharing and distributed intelli- gence opens up a new class of remote-sensing applications in which small single-function autono- mous observers at the local level can collectively optimize and measure large scale ground-level signals. AS the need for coverage and the number of agents grows to improve spatial resolution, cooperative behavior orchestrated by a global situational awareness umbrella will be an essential ingredient to offset increasing bandwidth requirements within the net. A system of the type described in this proposal will be capable of sensitively detecting, tracking, and mapping spatial distributions of measurement signatures which are non-stationary or obscured by clutter and inter- fering obstacles by virtue of adaptive reconfiguration. This methodology could be used, for example, to field an adaptive ground-penetrating radar for detection of underground structures in urban environments and to detect chemical species concentrations in migrating plumes.     Ship target recognition

    Includes bibliographical references.In this report the classification of ship targets using a low resolution radar system is investigated. The thesis can be divided into two major parts. The first part summarizes research into the applications of neural networks to the low resolution non-cooperative ship target recognition problem. Three very different neural architectures are investigated and compared, namely; the Feedforward Network with Back-propagation, Kohonen's Supervised Learning Vector Quantization Network, and Simpson's Fuzzy Min-Max neural network. In all cases, pre-processing in the form of the Fourier-Modified Discrete Mellin Transform is used as a means of extracting feature vectors which are insensitive to the aspect angle of the radar. Classification tests are based on both simulated and real data. Classification accuracies of up to 93 are reported. The second part is of a purely investigative nature, and summarizes a body of research aimed at exploring new ground. The crux of this work is centered on the proposal to use synthetic range profiling in order to achieve a much higher range resolution (and hence better classification accuracies). Included in this work is a comprehensive investigation into the use of super-resolution and noise reducing eigendecomposition techniques. Algorithms investigated include the Principal Eigenvector Method, the Total Least Squares Method, and the MUSIC method. A final proposal for future research and development concerns the use of time domain averaging to improve the classification performance of the radar system.     A Comprehensive Survey of Deep Learning in Remote Sensing: Theories, Tools and Challenges for the Community

    In recent years, deep learning (DL), a re-branding of neural networks (NNs), has risen to the top in numerous areas, namely computer vision (CV), speech recognition, natural language processing, etc. Whereas remote sensing (RS) possesses a number of unique challenges, primarily related to sensors and applications, inevitably RS draws from many of the same theories as CV; e.g., statistics, fusion, and machine learning, to name a few. This means that the RS community should be aware of, if not at the leading edge of, of advancements like DL. Herein, we provide the most comprehensive survey of state-of-the-art RS DL research. We also review recent new developments in the DL field that can be used in DL for RS. Namely, we focus on theories, tools and challenges for the RS community. Specifically, we focus on unsolved challenges and opportunities as it relates to (i) inadequate data sets, (ii) human-understandable solutions for modelling physical phenomena, (iii) Big Data, (iv) non-traditional heterogeneous data sources, (v) DL architectures and learning algorithms for spectral, spatial and temporal data, (vi) transfer learning, (vii) an improved theoretical understanding of DL systems, (viii) high barriers to entry, and (ix) training and optimizing the DL.Comment: 64 pages, 411 references.     Magnetic and radar sensing for multimodal remote health monitoring

    With the increased life expectancy and rise in health conditions related to aging, there is a need for new technologies that can routinely monitor vulnerable people, identify their daily pattern of activities and any anomaly or critical events such as falls. This paper aims to evaluate magnetic and radar sensors as suitable technologies for remote health monitoring purpose, both individually and fusing their information. After experiments and collecting data from 20 volunteers, numerical features has been extracted in both time and frequency domains. In order to analyse and verify the validation of fusion method for different classifiers, a Support Vector Machine with a quadratic kernel, and an Artificial Neural Network with one and multiple hidden layers have been implemented. Furthermore, for both classifiers, feature selection has been performed to obtain salient features. Using this technique along with fusion, both classifiers can detect 10 different activities with an accuracy rate of approximately 96%. In cases where the user is unknown to the classifier, an accuracy of approximately 92% is maintained

    Application of the fruit fly optimization algorithm to an optimized neural network model in radar target recognition

    With the development of computer technology, there are more and more algorithms and models for data processing and analysis, which brings a new direction to radar target recognition. This study mainly analyzed the recognition of high resolution range profile (HRRP) in radar target recognition and applied the generalized regression neural network (GRNN) model for HRRP recognition. In order to improve the performance of HRRP, the fruit fly optimization algorithm (FOA) algorithm was improved to optimize the parameters of the GRNN model. Simulation experiments were carried out on three types of aircraft. The improved FOA-GRNN (IFOA-GRNN) model was compared with the radial basis function (RBF) and GRNN models. The results showed that the IFOA-GRNN model had a better convergence accuracy, the highest average recognition rate (96.4 %), the shortest average calculation time (275 s), and a good recognition rate under noise in-terference. The experimental results show that the IFOA-GRNN model has a good performance in radar target recognition and can be further promoted and applied in practice

    Toward Deep Learning-Based Human Target Analysis

    In this chapter, we describe methods toward deep learning-based human target analysis. Firstly, human target analysis in 2D and 3D domains of radar signal is introduced. Furthermore, range-Doppler surface for human target analysis using ultra-wideband radar is described. The construction of range-Doppler surface involves range-Doppler imaging, adaptive threshold detection, and isosurface extraction. In comparison with micro-Doppler profiles and high-resolution range profiles, range-Doppler surface contains range, Doppler, and time information simultaneously. An ellipsoid-based human motion model is designed for validation. Range-Doppler surfaces simulated for different human activities are demonstrated and discussed. With the rapid emergence of deep learning, the development of radar target recognition has been accelerated. We describe several deep learning algorithms for human target analysis. Finally, a few future research considerations are listed to spark inspiration

    Radar Emitter Classification based on Deep Ensemble

    Dissertation presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Information Management, specialization in Knowledge Management and Business IntelligenceElectronic Support Measures (ESM) systems are designed to classify radar signals, providing information about the presence of threats. This function aids in battlefield situational awareness and the commander's decision on which countermeasures to employ. This dissertation aims to develop a deep ensemble model, recognizing the importance of a fast and precise classification based on a deep forest as an alternative to the parameter matching method. Four deep ensemble models and six of its base learners were built and evaluated to classify 52 emitters, using seven train/test datasets and two test datasets with noise, totalling 420 measurements of accuracy and classification speed. After analyzing these results, two deep ensemble models and their base learners were optimized, each for a different dataset, achieving 100% accuracy in a feature-engineered dataset and up to 98.358% in the original dataset. Regarding classification speed, the fastest models can classify 1000 records in 64ms, which may be acceptable in the real world. The experimental results of this approach reveal several advantages, making it a feasible alternative, including reduced dependency on ESM experts, ease of maintenance, quick to update, and high accuracy

    Autonomous Vehicles: MMW Radar Backscattering Modeling of Traffic Environment, Vehicular Communication Modeling, and Antenna Designs

    77 GHz Millimeter-wave (mmWave) radar serves as an essential component among many sensors required for autonomous navigation. High-fidelity simulation is indispensable for nowadays’ development of advanced automotive radar systems because radar simulation can accelerate the design and testing process and help people to better understand and process the radar data. The main challenge in automotive radar simulation is to simulate the complex scattering behavior of various targets in real time, which is required for sensor fusion with other sensory simulation, e.g. optical image simulation. In this thesis, an asymptotic method based on a fast-wideband physical optics (PO) calculation is developed and applied to get high fidelity radar response of traffic scenes and generate the corresponding radar images from traffic targets. The targets include pedestrians, vehicles, and other stationary targets. To further accelerate the simulation into real time, a physics-based statistical approach is developed. The RCS of targets are fit into statistical distributions, and then the statistical parameters are summarized as functions of range and aspect angles, and other attributes of the targets. For advanced radar with multiple transmitters and receivers, pixelated-scatterer statistical RCS models are developed to represent objects as extend targets and relax the requirement for far-field condition. A real-time radar scene simulation software, which will be referred to as Michigan Automotive Radar Scene Simulator (MARSS), based on the statistical models are developed and integrated with a physical 3D scene generation software (Unreal Engine 4). One of the major challenges in radar signal processing is to detect the angle of arrival (AOA) of multiple targets. A new analytic multiple-sources AOA estimation algorithm that outperforms many well-known AOA estimation algorithms is developed and verified by experiments. Moreover, the statistical parameters of RCS from targets and radar images are used in target classification approaches based on machine learning methods. In realistic road traffic environment, foliage is commonly encountered that can potentially block the line-of-sight link. In the second part of the thesis, a non-line-of-sight (NLoS) vehicular propagation channel model for tree trunks at two vehicular communication bands (5.9 GHz and 60 GHz) is proposed. Both near-field and far-field scattering models from tree trunk are developed based on modal expansion and surface current integral method. To make the results fast accessible and retractable, a macro model based on artificial neural network (ANN) is proposed to fit the path loss calculated from the complex electromagnetic (EM) based methods. In the third part of the thesis, two broadband (bandwidth > 50%) omnidirectional antenna designs are discussed to enable polarization diversity for next-generation communication systems. The first design is a compact horizontally polarized (HP) antenna, which contains four folded dipole radiators and utilizing their mutual coupling to enhance the bandwidth. The second one is a circularly polarized (CP) antenna. It is composed of one ultra-wide-band (UWB) monopole, the compact HP antenna, and a dedicatedly designed asymmetric power divider based feeding network.
