    The Evolution of Stop-motion Animation Technique Through 120 Years of Technological Innovations

    Stop-motion animation history has been put on paper by several scholars and practitioners who tried to organize 120 years of technological innovations and material experiments dealing with a huge literature. Bruce Holman (1975), Neil Pettigrew (1999), Ken Priebe (2010), Stefano Bessoni (2014), and more recently Adrián Encinas Salamanca (2017), provided the most detailed even tough partial attempts of systematization, and designed historical reconstructions by considering specific periods of time, film lengths or the use of stop-motion as special effect rather than an animation technique. This article provides another partial historical reconstruction of the evolution of stop-motion and outlines the main events that occurred in the development of this technique, following criteria based on the innovations in the technology of materials and manufacturing processes that have influenced the fabrication of puppets until the present day. The systematization follows a chronological order and takes into account events that changed the technique of a puppets’ manufacturing process as a consequence of the use of either new fabrication processes or materials. Starting from the accident that made the French film-pioneer Georges Méliès discover the trick of the replacement technique at the end of the nineteenth century, the reconstruction goes through 120 years of experiments and films. “Build up” puppets fabricated by the Russian puppet animator Ladislaw Starevicz with insect exoskeletons, the use of clay puppets and the innovations introduced by LAIKA entertainment in the last decade such as Stereoscopic photography and the 3D computer printed replacement pieces, and then the increasing influence of digital technologies in the process of puppet fabrication are some of the main considered events. Technology transfers, new materials’ features, innovations in the way of animating puppets, are the main aspects through which this historical analysis approaches the previously mentioned events. This short analysis is supposed to remind and demonstrate that stop-motion animation is an interdisciplinary occasion of both artistic expression and technological experimentation, and that its evolution and aesthetic is related to cultural, geographical and technological issues. Lastly, if the technology of materials and processes is a constantly evolving field, what future can be expected for this cinematographic technique? The article ends with this open question and without providing an answer it implicitly states the role of stop-motion as a driving force for innovations that come from other fields and are incentivized by the needs of this specific sector

    The experimental elicitation of motion sickness using a short arm centrifuge or a rotating chair surrounded by a striped cylindrical enclosure failed to reveal any systematic group or consistent individual relationship between changes in heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature and the appearance of symptoms of motion sickness. A study of the influence of vision on susceptability to motion sickness during sudden stop simulation shows that having the eyes open during any part of the sudden stop assessment is more stressful than having them closed throughout the test. Subjects were found to be highly susceptible to motion sickness when tested in free fall and in high force phases of flight. The effect of touch and pressure cues on body orientation during rotation and in parabolic flight are considered as sensory as well as motor adaptation

    Penelitian ini bertujuan: 1) untuk mengetahui pengaruh penggunaan stop motion terhadap hasil belajar ranah kognitif di Kelas XI MIA SMA Negeri 10 Garut. 2) Untuk mengetahui pengaruh penggunaan presentasi aplikasi Prezi terhadap hasil belajar ranah kognitif di kelas XI MIA SMA Negeri 10 Garut. 3) Untuk mengetahui perbedaan pengaruh penggunaan stop motion dengan presentasi aplikasi Prezi terhadap hasil belajar ranah kognitif di Kelas XI MIA SMA Negeri 10 Garut. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuasi eksperimen dengan pretest and posttest control group design menggunakan satu kelas eksperimen dan satu kelas kontrol. Instrumen yang digunakan berupa tes tulis. Teknik pengambilan sampel menggunakan random sampel kelas, yaitu menggambil 2 kelas menjadi sampel dari 5 kelas yang menjadi populasi Kesimpulan penelitian yaitu pembelajaran Biologi di Sekolah Menengah Atas dengan menggunakan media stop motion lebih baik daripada siswa yang menggunakan media presentasi aplikasi Prezi. Hal tersebut dapat dilihat dari perolehan hasil belajar pada ranah kognitif siswa kelas eksperimen yang menggunakan media stop motion lebih tinggi apabila dibandingkan dengan hasil belajar siswa yang menggunakan media presentasi aplikasi Prezi yang biasa digunakan oleh guru pada kelas kontrol. Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. Dalam Pembelajaran bahasa Jerman di SMA, siswa terkadang mengalami kesulitan dalam menguasai Wechselpräposition. Salah satu penyebabnya diduga karena masih kurangnya pemahaman siswa, minat belajar dan pemberian latihan. Untuk itu diperlukan media pembelajaran yang dapat mengatasi permasalahan tersebut. Salah satu media yang dapat digunakan adalah video Stop Motion. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui: (1) Kemampuan penguasaan Wechselpräpositionen peserta didik dalam pembelajaran bahasa Jerman sebelum menggunakan media video Stop Motion, (2) Kemampuan penguasaan Wechselpräpositionen peserta didik dalam pembelajaran bahasa Jerman setelah menggunakan media video Stop Motion, (3) Efektivitas media video Stop Motion dalam meningkatkan kemampuan peserta didik terhadap penguasaan Wechselpräpositionen. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode quasi Experiment dengan model One Group Pretest-Posttest. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas XI SMA Plus Asthahannas Subang dan sebagai sampel diambil siswa kelas XI IPA 1 sebanyak 11 orang. Instrumen utama penelitian ini yaitu tes tertulis sebanyak 25 soal, sedangkan instrumen pelengkapnya adalah Rencana Pelaksanaan Pembelajaran. Hasil analisis data menunjukan bahwa: 1) Pada hasil Pretest diperoleh nilai rata-rata sebesar 51,64. Hal ini menunjukan bahwa kemampuan siswa dalam penguasaan materi Wechselprӓposition sebelum penggunaan media video Stop Motion termasuk ke dalam kategori “kurang”, 2) Pada hasil Posttest diperoleh nilai rata-rata sebesar 70,55. Hal ini menunjukan bahwa kemampuan siswa dalam penguasaan materi Wechselprӓposition setelah menggunakan media video Stop Motion termasuk ke dalam kategori “baik”, 3) Berdasarkan hasil uji t diperoleh t hitung 0,01 dengan taraf signifikansi (α) 0,05. Hal tersebut menunjukan bahwa terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan antara hasil Pretest dan Posttest. Um diese Probleme zu lösen, braucht man ein Lernmedien, das man im Unterricht einsetzen kann, ist Stop Motion Video. Die Ziele dieser Untersuchung sind um herauszufinden: (1)die Fähigkeit der Schüller bei der Beherrschung der Wechselprӓposition im Deutschunterricht vor der Anwendung des Videomedien Stop Motion, (2) die Fähigkeit der Schüller bei der Beherrschung der Wechselprӓposition im Deutschunterricht nach der Anwendung des Videomedien Stop Motion, (3) die Effektivität des Videomedien Stop Motion zur Steigerung der Fähigkeit der Schüller bei der Beherrschung der Wechselprӓposition. In dieser Untersuchung wurde die Quasi-Experiment-Methode mit dem One-Group-Pretest-Posttest Design verwendet. Die Population dieser Untersuchung waren alle Schüller der Klasse XI SMA Plus Asthahannas Subang und als Probanden wurden 11 Schüller der Klasse XI IPA 1 genommen. Das Hauptinstrumen war ein schriftlicher Test, der aus 25 Aufgaben besteht, und die Lehrsskizze gilt als zusätzliches Instrumen. Die Ergebnisse dieser Untersuchung zeigen folgendes: 1) Die Durchschnittsnote des Vortestes ist 51,64. Dies bedeutet, dass die Fähigkeit der Schüller bei der Beherrschung der Wechselprӓposition vor der Anwendung des Videomedien Stop Motion zur Kategorie “mangelhaft” gehort, 2) Die Durchschnittsnote des Nachtestes ist 70,55. Dies bedeutet, dass die Fähigkeit der Schüller bei der Beherrschung der Wechselprӓposition nach der Anwendung des Videomedien Stop Motion zur Kategorie “gut” gehort, 3) Das Ergebnis der Berechnung mit dem t- Test zeigte, dass t Rechnung 0,01 mit dem (α) 0,05-signifikanten Wert ist. Dies bedeutet, dass es einen signifikanten Unterschied zwischen dem Ergebnis des Vortestes und dem Ergebnis des Nachtestes gibt. Mit anderen Worten kann man sagen, dass das Videomedien Stop Motion zur Steigerung der Fähigkeit der Schüller bei der Beherrschung der Wechselprӓposition effektiv ist und man das Stop Motion als ein alternatives Medium beim Wechselprӓpositionslernen benutzen kann. Learning German in high school, students sometimes have difficulty in mastering Wechselpräposition. One of the reasons is suspected to be the lack of student understanding, learning interest and training. For this reason learning media that can overcome these problems are needed. One of the media that can be used is Stop Motion video. The purpose of this research is to find out: (1) the capability in mastering Wechselpräposition of students in learning German before using Stop Motion video media, (2) the capability in mastering Wechselpräposition of students in learning German after using Stop Motion video media, (3) the effectiveness of Stop Motion video media in improving students capability towards mastery of Wechselpräpositionen. This study uses a quasi-experimental method with One Group Pretest-Posttest model. The population in this research were all students of class XI Plus High School Asthahannas Subang and the sample of this research were 11 students of class XI IPA 1. The main instrument of this research is a written test of 25 questions, while the additional instrument is Learning Implementation Plan. The results of data analysis show that: 1) In the Pretest results obtained an average value of 51.64. This shows that the ability of students in mastering Wechselprӓposition material before the use of Stop Motion video media is included in the category of "less than statisfactory", 2) On the Posttest results obtained an average value of 70.55. This shows that the ability of students in mastering Wechselprӓposition material after using Stop Motion video media is included in the category of "good", 3) Based on the t test results obtained t count 0.01 with a significance level (α) 0.05. This shows that there are significant differences between Pretest and Posttest results. Based on the result of this research it can be concluded that the Stop Motion video media is effective in increasing students capability in mastering Wechselprӓposition material and can be used as an alternative learning media in mastering Wechselprӓposition

    Implementation of Stop Motion Graphic Animation Video as Learning Media to Improve Students' Ecoliteracy Ability on the Subject Matter of Environmental Change

    This study aimed to determine the increase in student’s ecoliteracy skills through the implementation of stop motion graphic animation video as the learning media on the subject matter of environmental change. In conducting the study, it used the Pre-experiment method in the form of a quasi-experiment, one group pretest-posttest. The results of this study showed that, there was a significant increase in students’ ecoliteracy skills obtained in pretest by students before implementing the stop motion graphic animation media as 71.2. Meanwhile, the implementationof it showed an increase as the result of the posttestobtained an increased average value of 90.1. The use of stop motion graphic animation was applicable to be used as one of the learning media in biology. This was because it fostered students’ interest in the learning process. Therefore, based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that the stop motion graphic animation video can be used to improve students’ ecoliteracy skills significantlyPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui peningkatan kemampuan ekoliterasi siswa melalui implementasi media video stop motion animation pada materi perubahan lingkungan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode Pree-eksperimen , desain penelitian ini berupa Quasi-eksperiment , One Group Pretest-Posttest . Hasil penelitian ini adalah (1) terdapat peningkatan yang signifikan terhadap kemampuan ekoliterasi siswa pada materi perubahan lingkungan, dilihat dari nilai rata-rata pretest yang diperoleh siswa sebelum diterapkan media pembelajaran video stop motion graphic animation yaitu 71,2, setelah diterapkan media pembelajaran rata -rata rata nilai hasil posttestsiswa meningkat menjadi 90,1. (2) penggunaan video stop motion graphic animation layak dijadikan sebagai salah satu media dalam pembelajaran biologi menumbuhkan ketertarikan siswa dalam proses belajar mengajar. Berdasarkan kedua fakta tersebut dapat disimpulkan bahwa media stop motion animation dapat meningkatkan kemampuan ekoliterasi siswa secara signifikan

    Universal flow-density relation of single-file bicycle, pedestrian and car motion

    The relation between flow and density is an essential quantitative characteristic to describe the efficiency of traffic systems. We have performed experiments with single-file motion of bicycles and compare the results with previous studies for car and pedestrian motion in similar setups. In the space-time diagrams we observe three different states of motion (free flow state, jammed state and stop-and-go waves) in all these systems. Despite of their obvious differences they are described by a universal fundamental diagram after proper rescaling of space and time which takes into account the size and free velocity of the three kinds of agents. This indicates that the similarities between the systems go deeper than expected.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
