    Controlling Stochastic Sensitivity by Feedback Regulators in Nonlinear Dynamical Systems with Incomplete Information

    The problem of synthesis of stochastic sensitivity for equilibrium modes in nonlinear randomly forced dynamical systems with incomplete information is considered. We construct a feedback regulator that uses noisy data on some system state coordinates. For parameters of the regulator providing assigned stochastic sensitivity, a quadratic matrix equation is derived. Attainability of the assigned stochastic sensitivity is reduced to the solvability of this equation. We suggest a constructive algorithm for solving this quadratic matrix equation. These general theoretical results are used to solve the problem of stabilizing equilibrium modes of nonlinear stochastic oscillators under conditions of incomplete information. Details of our approach are illustrated on the example of a van der Pol oscillator. © 2021 by the author.     A review on analysis and synthesis of nonlinear stochastic systems with randomly occurring incomplete information

The well-known types of incomplete information include parameter uncertainties and norm-bounded nonlinearities. Recently, in response to the development of network technologies, the phenomenon of randomly occurring incomplete information has become more and more prevalent. Such a phenomenon typically appears in a networked environment. Examples include, but are not limited to, randomly occurring uncertainties, randomly occurring nonlinearities, randomly occurring saturation, randomly missing measurements and randomly occurring quantization. Randomly occurring incomplete information, if not properly handled, would seriously deteriorate the performance of a control system. In this paper, we aim to survey some recent advances on the analysis and synthesis problems for nonlinear stochastic systems with randomly occurring incomplete information. The developments of the filtering, control and fault detection problems are systematically reviewed. Latest results on analysis and synthesis of nonlinear stochastic systems are discussed in great detail. In addition, various distributed filtering technologies over sensor networks are highlighted.     A survey on gain-scheduled control and filtering for parameter-varying systems

First of all, we recall several important algorithms suitable for gain-scheduling method including gain-scheduled proportional-integral derivative (PID) control, H 2, H ∞ and mixed H 2 / H ∞ gain-scheduling methods as well as fuzzy gain-scheduling techniques. Secondly, various important parameter-varying system models are reviewed, for which gain-scheduled control and filtering issues are usually dealt with. In particular, in view of the randomly occurring phenomena with time-varying probability distributions, some results of our recent work based on the probability-dependent gain-scheduling methods are reviewed. Furthermore, some latest progress in this area is discussed.     Variance-constrained multiobjective control and filtering for nonlinear stochastic systems: A survey

    The multiobjective control and filtering problems for nonlinear stochastic systems with variance constraints are surveyed. First, the concepts of nonlinear stochastic systems are recalled along with the introduction of some recent advances. Then, the covariance control theory, which serves as a practical method for multi-objective control design as well as a foundation for linear system theory, is reviewed comprehensively. The multiple design requirements frequently applied in engineering practice for the use of evaluating system performances are introduced, including robustness, reliability, and dissipativity. Several design techniques suitable for the multi-objective variance-constrained control and filtering problems for nonlinear stochastic systems are discussed. In particular, as a special case for the multi-objective design problems, the mixed H 2 / H ∞ control and filtering problems are reviewed in great detail. Subsequently, some latest results on the variance-constrained multi-objective control and filtering problems for the nonlinear stochastic systems are summarized. Finally, conclusions are drawn, and several possible future research directions are pointed out

    Identifying dynamical systems with bifurcations from noisy partial observation

    Dynamical systems are used to model a variety of phenomena in which the bifurcation structure is a fundamental characteristic. Here we propose a statistical machine-learning approach to derive lowdimensional models that automatically integrate information in noisy time-series data from partial observations. The method is tested using artificial data generated from two cell-cycle control system models that exhibit different bifurcations, and the learned systems are shown to robustly inherit the bifurcation structure.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figure

    Tuning Windowed Chi-Squared Detectors for Sensor Attacks

    A model-based windowed chi-squared procedure is proposed for identifying falsified sensor measurements. We employ the widely-used static chi-squared and the dynamic cumulative sum (CUSUM) fault/attack detection procedures as benchmarks to compare the performance of the windowed chi-squared detector. In particular, we characterize the state degradation that a class of attacks can induce to the system while enforcing that the detectors do not raise alarms (zero-alarm attacks). We quantify the advantage of using dynamic detectors (windowed chi-squared and CUSUM detectors), which leverages the history of the state, over a static detector (chi-squared) which uses a single measurement at a time. Simulations using a chemical reactor are presented to illustrate the performance of our tools

    Systems approaches and algorithms for discovery of combinatorial therapies

    Effective therapy of complex diseases requires control of highly non-linear complex networks that remain incompletely characterized. In particular, drug intervention can be seen as control of signaling in cellular networks. Identification of control parameters presents an extreme challenge due to the combinatorial explosion of control possibilities in combination therapy and to the incomplete knowledge of the systems biology of cells. In this review paper we describe the main current and proposed approaches to the design of combinatorial therapies, including the empirical methods used now by clinicians and alternative approaches suggested recently by several authors. New approaches for designing combinations arising from systems biology are described. We discuss in special detail the design of algorithms that identify optimal control parameters in cellular networks based on a quantitative characterization of control landscapes, maximizing utilization of incomplete knowledge of the state and structure of intracellular networks. The use of new technology for high-throughput measurements is key to these new approaches to combination therapy and essential for the characterization of control landscapes and implementation of the algorithms. Combinatorial optimization in medical therapy is also compared with the combinatorial optimization of engineering and materials science and similarities and differences are delineated.Comment: 25 page
