Aerial navigation in obstructed environments with embedded nonlinear model predictive control
We propose a methodology for autonomous aerial navigation and obstacle
avoidance of micro aerial vehicles (MAV) using nonlinear model predictive
control (NMPC) and we demonstrate its effectiveness with laboratory
experiments. The proposed methodology can accommodate obstacles of arbitrary,
potentially non-convex, geometry. The NMPC problem is solved using PANOC: a
fast numerical optimization method which is completely matrix-free, is not
sensitive to ill conditioning, involves only simple algebraic operations and is
suitable for embedded NMPC. A C89 implementation of PANOC solves the NMPC
problem at a rate of 20Hz on board a lab-scale MAV. The MAV performs smooth
maneuvers moving around an obstacle. For increased autonomy, we propose a
simple method to compensate for the reduction of thrust over time, which comes
from the depletion of the MAV's battery, by estimating the thrust constant

Motion Planning for Quadrupedal Locomotion:Coupled Planning, Terrain Mapping and Whole-Body Control
Planning whole-body motions while taking into account the terrain conditions is a challenging problem for legged robots since the terrain model might produce many local minima. Our coupled planning method uses stochastic and derivatives-free search to plan both foothold locations and horizontal motions due to the local minima produced by the terrain model. It jointly optimizes body motion, step duration and foothold selection, and it models the terrain as a cost-map. Due to the novel attitude planning method, the horizontal motion plans can be applied to various terrain conditions. The attitude planner ensures the robot stability by imposing limits to the angular acceleration. Our whole-body controller tracks compliantly trunk motions while avoiding slippage, as well as kinematic and torque limits. Despite the use of a simplified model, which is restricted to flat terrain, our approach shows remarkable capability to deal with a wide range of noncoplanar terrains. The results are validated by experimental trials and comparative evaluations in a series of terrains of progressively increasing complexity
Distance estimation and collision prediction for on-line robotic motion planning
An efficient method for computing the minimum distance and predicting collisions between moving objects is presented. This problem has been incorporated in the framework of an in-line motion planning algorithm to satisfy collision avoidance between a robot and moving objects modeled as convex polyhedra. In the beginning the deterministic problem, where the information about the objects is assumed to be certain is examined. If instead of the Euclidean norm, L(sub 1) or L(sub infinity) norms are used to represent distance, the problem becomes a linear programming problem. The stochastic problem is formulated, where the uncertainty is induced by sensing and the unknown dynamics of the moving obstacles. Two problems are considered: (1) filtering of the minimum distance between the robot and the moving object, at the present time; and (2) prediction of the minimum distance in the future, in order to predict possible collisions with the moving obstacles and estimate the collision time
IK-FA, a new heuristic inverse kinematics solver using firefly algorithm
In this paper, a heuristic method based on Firefly Algorithm is proposed for inverse kinematics problems in articulated robotics. The proposal is called, IK-FA. Solving inverse kinematics, IK, consists in finding a set of joint-positions allowing a specific point of the system to achieve a target position. In IK-FA, the Fireflies positions are assumed to be a possible solution for joints elementary motions. For a robotic system with a known forward kinematic model, IK-Fireflies, is used to generate iteratively a set of joint motions, then the forward kinematic model of the system is used to compute the relative Cartesian positions of a specific end-segment, and to compare it to the needed target position. This is a heuristic approach for solving inverse kinematics without computing the inverse model. IK-FA tends to minimize the distance to a target position, the fitness function could be established as the distance between the obtained forward positions and the desired one, it is subject to minimization. In this paper IK-FA is tested over a 3 links articulated planar system, the evaluation is based on statistical analysis of the convergence and the solution quality for 100 tests. The impact of key FA parameters is also investigated with a focus on the impact of the number of fireflies, the impact of the maximum iteration number and also the impact of (a, ß, ¿, d) parameters. For a given set of valuable parameters, the heuristic converges to a static fitness value within a fix maximum number of iterations. IK-FA has a fair convergence time, for the tested configuration, the average was about 2.3394 × 10-3 seconds with a position error fitness around 3.116 × 10-8 for 100 tests. The algorithm showed also evidence of robustness over the target position, since for all conducted tests with a random target position IK-FA achieved a solution with a position error lower or equal to 5.4722 × 10-9.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Scalable Approach to Uncertainty Quantification and Robust Design of Interconnected Dynamical Systems
Development of robust dynamical systems and networks such as autonomous
aircraft systems capable of accomplishing complex missions faces challenges due
to the dynamically evolving uncertainties coming from model uncertainties,
necessity to operate in a hostile cluttered urban environment, and the
distributed and dynamic nature of the communication and computation resources.
Model-based robust design is difficult because of the complexity of the hybrid
dynamic models including continuous vehicle dynamics, the discrete models of
computations and communications, and the size of the problem. We will overview
recent advances in methodology and tools to model, analyze, and design robust
autonomous aerospace systems operating in uncertain environment, with stress on
efficient uncertainty quantification and robust design using the case studies
of the mission including model-based target tracking and search, and trajectory
planning in uncertain urban environment. To show that the methodology is
generally applicable to uncertain dynamical systems, we will also show examples
of application of the new methods to efficient uncertainty quantification of
energy usage in buildings, and stability assessment of interconnected power
networks
Fault-tolerant feature-based estimation of space debris motion and inertial properties
The exponential increase of the needs of people in the modern society and the contextual
development of the space technologies have led to a significant use of the lower Earth’s
orbits for placing artificial satellites. The current overpopulation of these orbits also
increased the interest of the major space agencies in technologies for the removal of at
least the biggest spacecraft that have reached their end-life or have failed their mission.
One of the key functionalities required in a mission for removing a non-cooperative
spacecraft is the assessment of its kinematics and inertial properties. In a few cases, this
information can be approximated by ground observations. However, a re-assessment
after the rendezvous phase is of critical importance for refining the capture strategies
preventing accidents. The CADET program (CApture and DE-orbiting Technologies),
funded by Regione Piemonte and led by Aviospace s.r.l., involved Politecnico di Torino
in the research for solutions to the above issue.
This dissertation proposes methods and algorithms for estimating the location of
the center of mass, the angular rate, and the moments of inertia of a passive object.
These methods require that the chaser spacecraft be capable of tracking several features
of the target through passive vision sensors. Because of harsh lighting conditions in
the space environment, feature-based methods should tolerate temporary failures in
detecting features. The principal works on this topic do not consider this important
aspect, making it a characteristic trait of the proposed methods. Compared to typical

treatments of the estimation problem, the proposed techniques do not depend solely on
state observers. However, methods for recovering missing information, like compressive
sampling techniques, are used for preprocessing input data to support the efficient usage
of state observers. Simulation results showed accuracy properties that are comparable to
those of the best-known methods already proposed in the literature.
The developed algorithms were tested in the laboratory staged by Aviospace s.r.l.,
whose name is CADETLab. The results of the experimental tests suggested the practical
applicability of such algorithms for supporting a real active removal mission
