    Efficient mechanisms to provide fault tolerance in interconnection networks for pc clusters

    Actualmente, los clusters de PC son un alternativa rentable a los computadores paralelos. En estos sistemas, miles de componentes (procesadores y/o discos duros) se conectan a travĂ©s de redes de interconexiĂłn de altas prestaciones. Entre las tecnologĂ­as de red actualmente disponibles para construir clusters, InfiniBand (IBA) ha emergido como un nuevo estĂĄndar de interconexiĂłn para clusters. De hecho, ha sido adoptado por muchos de los sistemas mĂĄs potentes construidos actualmente (lista top500). A medida que el nĂșmero de nodos aumenta en estos sistemas, la red de interconexiĂłn tambiĂ©n crece. Junto con el aumento del nĂșmero de componentes la probabilidad de averĂ­as aumenta dramĂĄticamente, y asĂ­, la tolerancia a fallos en el sistema en general, y de la red de interconexiĂłn en particular, se convierte en una necesidad. Desafortunadamente, la mayor parte de las estrategias de encaminamiento tolerantes a fallos propuestas para los computadores masivamente paralelos no pueden ser aplicadas porque el encaminamiento y las transiciones de canal virtual son deterministas en IBA, lo que impide que los paquetes eviten los fallos. Por lo tanto, son necesarias nuevas estrategias para tolerar fallos. Por ello, esta tesis se centra en proporcionar los niveles adecuados de tolerancia a fallos a los clusters de PC, y en particular a las redes IBA. En esta tesis proponemos y evaluamos varios mecanismos adecuados para las redes de interconexiĂłn para clusters. El primer mecanismo para proporcionar tolerancia a fallos en IBA (al que nos referimos como encaminamiento tolerante a fallos basado en transiciones; TFTR) consiste en usar varias rutas disjuntas entre cada par de nodos origen-destino y seleccionar la ruta apropiada en el nodo fuente usando el mecanismo APM proporcionado por IBA.     Dynamic mission planning for communication control in multiple unmanned aircraft teams

A multi-UAV system relies on communications to operate. Failure to communicate remotely sensed mission data to the base may render the system ineffective, and the inability to exchange command and control messages can lead to system failures. This thesis presents a unique method to control communications through distributed mission planning to engage under-utilized UAVs to serve as communication relays and to ensure that the network supports mission tasks. The distributed algorithm uses task assignment information, including task location and proposed execution time, to predict the network topology and plan support using relays. By explicitly coupling task assignment and relay creation processes the team is able to optimize the use of agents to address the needs of dynamic complex missions. The framework is designed to consider realistic network communication dynamics including path loss, stochastic fading, and information routing. The planning strategy is shown to ensure agents support both data-rate and interconnectivity bit-error- rate requirements during task execution. In addition, a method is provided for UAVs to estimate the network performance during times of uncertainty, adjust their plans to acceptable levels of risk, and adapt the planning behavior to changes in the communication environment. The system performance is verified through multiple experiments conducted in simulation. Finally, the work developed is implemented in outdoor flight testing with a team of up to four UAVs to demonstrate real-time capability and robustness to imperfections in the environment. The results validate the proposed framework, but highlight some of the challenges these systems face when operating in outdoor uncontrolled environments.by Andrew N. Kopeikin.S.M

    The manufacturing world is being deeply challenged with a set of ever demanding constraints where from one side, the costumers are requiring products to be more customizable, with higher quality at lower prices, and on other side, companies have to deal on a daily basis with internal disturbances that range from machine breakdown to worker absence and from demand fluctuation to frequent production changes. This dissertation proposes a manufacturing control architecture, following the holonic principles developed in the ADAptive holonic COntrol aRchitecture (ADACOR) and extending it taking inspiration in evolutionary theories and making use of self- organization mechanisms. The use of evolutionary theories enrich the proposed control architecture by allowing evolution in two distinct ways, responding accordingly to the type and degree of the disturbance that appears. The first component, named behavioural self- organization, allows each system’s entity to dynamically adapt its internal behaviour, addressing small disturbances. The second component, named structural self-organization, addresses bigger disturbances by allowing the system entities to re-arrange their rela- tionships, and consequently changing the system in a structural manner. The proposed self-organized holonic manufacturing control architecture was validated at a AIP-PRIMECA flexible manufacturing cell. The achieved experimental results have also shown an improvement of the key performance indicators over the hierarchical and heterarchical control architecture.Le monde des entreprises est profondĂ©ment soumis Ă  un ensemble de contraintes toujours plus exigeantes provenant d’une part des clients, exigeant des produits plus personnalisables, de qualitĂ© supĂ©rieure et Ă  faible coĂ»t, et d’autre part des alĂ©as internes auxentreprises, comprenant les pannes machines, les dĂ©faillances humaines, la fluctuation de la demande, les frĂ©quentes variations de production.     Fuelling the zero-emissions road freight of the future: routing of mobile fuellers

    The future of zero-emissions road freight is closely tied to the sufficient availability of new and clean fuel options such as electricity and Hydrogen. In goods distribution using Electric Commercial Vehicles (ECVs) and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles (HFCVs) a major challenge in the transition period would pertain to their limited autonomy and scarce and unevenly distributed refuelling stations. One viable solution to facilitate and speed up the adoption of ECVs/HFCVs by logistics, however, is to get the fuel to the point where it is needed (instead of diverting the route of delivery vehicles to refuelling stations) using "Mobile Fuellers (MFs)". These are mobile battery swapping/recharging vans or mobile Hydrogen fuellers that can travel to a running ECV/HFCV to provide the fuel they require to complete their delivery routes at a rendezvous time and space. In this presentation, new vehicle routing models will be presented for a third party company that provides MF services. In the proposed problem variant, the MF provider company receives routing plans of multiple customer companies and has to design routes for a fleet of capacitated MFs that have to synchronise their routes with the running vehicles to deliver the required amount of fuel on-the-fly. This presentation will discuss and compare several mathematical models based on different business models and collaborative logistics scenarios

    African Handbook of Climate Change Adaptation

    This open access book discusses current thinking and presents the main issues and challenges associated with climate change in Africa. It introduces evidences from studies and projects which show how climate change adaptation is being - and may continue to be successfully implemented in African countries. Thanks to its scope and wide range of themes surrounding climate change, the ambition is that this book will be a lead publication on the topic, which may be regularly updated and hence capture further works. Climate change is a major global challenge. However, some geographical regions are more severly affected than others. One of these regions is the African continent. Due to a combination of unfavourable socio-economic and meteorological conditions, African countries are particularly vulnerable to climate change and its impacts. The recently released IPCC special report "Global Warming of 1.5Âș C" outlines the fact that keeping global warming by the level of 1.5Âș C is possible, but also suggested that an increase by 2Âș C could lead to crises with crops (agriculture fed by rain could drop by 50% in some African countries by 2020) and livestock production, could damage water supplies and pose an additonal threat to coastal areas. The 5th Assessment Report produced by IPCC predicts that wheat may disappear from Africa by 2080, and that maize— a staple—will fall significantly in southern Africa. Also, arid and semi-arid lands are likely to increase by up to 8%, with severe ramifications for livelihoods, poverty eradication and meeting the SDGs. Pursuing appropriate adaptation strategies is thus vital, in order to address the current and future challenges posed by a changing climate. It is against this background that the "African Handbook of Climate Change Adaptation" is being published. It contains papers prepared by scholars, representatives from social movements, practitioners and members of governmental agencies, undertaking research and/or executing climate change projects in Africa, and working with communities across the African continent. Encompassing over 100 contribtions from across Africa, it is the most comprehensive publication on climate change adaptation in Africa ever produced

    Knowledge and Management Models for Sustainable Growth

    In the last years sustainability has become a topic of global concern and a key issue in the strategic agenda of both business organizations and public authorities and organisations. Significant changes in business landscape, the emergence of new technology, including social media, the pressure of new social concerns, have called into question established conceptualizations of competitiveness, wealth creation and growth. New and unaddressed set of issues regarding how private and public organisations manage and invest their resources to create sustainable value have brought to light. In particular the increasing focus on environmental and social themes has suggested new dimensions to be taken into account in the value creation dynamics, both at organisations and communities level. For companies the need of integrating corporate social and environmental responsibility issues into strategy and daily business operations, pose profound challenges, which, in turn, involve numerous processes and complex decisions influenced by many stakeholders. Facing these challenges calls for the creation, use and exploitation of new knowledge as well as the development of proper management models, approaches and tools aimed to contribute to the development and realization of environmentally and socially sustainable business strategies and practices
