    3D video coding and transmission

    The capture, transmission, and display of 3D content has gained a lot of attention in the last few years. 3D multimedia content is no longer con fined to cinema theatres but is being transmitted using stereoscopic video over satellite, shared on Blu-RayTMdisks, or sent over Internet technologies. Stereoscopic displays are needed at the receiving end and the viewer needs to wear special glasses to present the two versions of the video to the human vision system that then generates the 3D illusion. To be more e ffective and improve the immersive experience, more views are acquired from a larger number of cameras and presented on di fferent displays, such as autostereoscopic and light field displays. These multiple views, combined with depth data, also allow enhanced user experiences and new forms of interaction with the 3D content from virtual viewpoints. This type of audiovisual information is represented by a huge amount of data that needs to be compressed and transmitted over bandwidth-limited channels.     Multiple description video coding for stereoscopic 3D

    In this paper, we propose an MDC schemes for stereoscopic 3D video. In the literature, MDC has previously been applied in 2D video but not so much in 3D video. The proposed algorithm enhances the error resilience of the 3D video using the combination of even and odd frame based MDC while retaining good temporal prediction efficiency for video over error-prone networks. Improvements are made to the original even and odd frame MDC scheme by adding a controllable amount of side information to improve frame interpolation at the decoder. The side information is also sent according to the video sequence motion for further improvement. The performance of the proposed algorithms is evaluated in error free and error prone environments especially for wireless channels. Simulation results show improved performance using the proposed MDC at high error rates compared to the single description coding (SDC) and the original even and odd frame MDC

    Adaptive protection scheme for MVC-encoded stereoscopic video streaming in IP-based networks

    We present an adaptive unequal error protection (UEP) strategy built on the 1-D interleaved parity Application Layer Forward Error Correction (AL-FEC) code for protecting the transmission of stereoscopic 3D video content encoded with Multiview Video Coding (MVC) through IP-based networks. Our scheme targets the minimization of quality degradation produced by packet losses during video transmission in time-sensitive application scenarios. To that end, based on a novel packet-level distortion model, it selects in real time the most suitable packets within each Group of Pictures (GOP) to be protected and the most convenient FEC technique parameters, i.e., the size of the FEC generator matrix. In order to make these decisions, it considers the relevance of the packet, the behavior of the channel, and the available bitrate for protection purposes. Simulation results validate both the distortion model introduced to estimate the importance of packets and the optimization of the FEC technique parameter values

    Comparing objective visual quality impairment detection in 2D and 3D video sequences

    The skill level of teleoperator plays a key role in the telerobotic operation. However, plenty of experiments are required to evaluate the skill level in a conventional assessment. In this paper, a novel brain-based method of skill assessment is introduced, and the relationship between the teleoperator's brain states and skill level is first investigated based on a kernel canonical correlation analysis (KCCA) method. The skill of teleoperator (SoT) is defined by a statistic method using the cumulative probability function (CDF). Five indicators are extracted from the electroencephalo-graph (EEG) of the teleoperator to represent the brain states during the telerobotic operation. By using the KCCA algorithm in modeling the relationship between the SoT and the brain states, the correlation has been proved. During the telerobotic operation, the skill level of teleoperator can be well predicted through the brain states. © 2013 IEEE.Link_to_subscribed_fulltex
