General Douglas MacArthur is one of the United States Military’s most controversial commanders as well as one of its most celebrated. Despite being highly decorated for his many years of service, his legacy is marred by criticisms of his tactical skill and accusations of arrogance. This essay presents a psychohistorical examination of MacArthur\u27s personality and its effect on his career. It supports the claims that his actions and attitudes fit the criteria for narcissistic personality disorder and that this disorder led to his eventual firing

General Douglas MacArthur, one of the most controversial figures in the twentieth-century history of the United States, was, until the end of his military service (1951), mostly praised as an army commander and champion of democracy. Then, doubts arose, and in the era of the dominance of the so-called New Left, he was denied all achievements in the military fields. The disclosure of new documents at the end of the twentieth century brought a gradual and at least partial rehabilitation of his person. Ujawnienie nowych dokumentów u schyłku XX w. przyniosło stopniową i przynajmniej częściową rehabilitację

MacArthur and Frozen Chosin: An Analysis of the Press Coverage of Douglas MacArthur during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir

The Korean war included the rapid deterioration of the military career of one of America\u27s most decorated generals. During the cold Korean November of 1950, General Douglas MacArthur’s 8th Army and X Corps army units were in a race along the Korean coasts toward the border with China. Unlike previous endeavors, MacArthur’s “Home by Christmas” offensive ended in defeat, with the United Nation’s forces retreating back over the 38th Parallel after a Chinese counter attack. The Battle of Chosin Reservoir took place during this offensive and lasted from 27 November to 13 December, 1950. Most scholars agree that in retrospect MacArthur’s advance was overzealous, while some maintain that it was the only move, which would have brought the war to a swift and decisive conclusion. The goal of this paper was to investigate how the major press in the United States was writing about General MacArthur during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. The press coverage during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir helped to ensure that MacArthur’s legacy included debate and polarization rather than his unanimous admiration as a war hero

Unity and Diversity in International Law

The primordial Greek sea-god Proteus could alter his shape at will, notwithstanding that his divine substance remained the same. Reinventing himself by adapting to new circumstances, Proteus still stayed unchanged in essence. Unlike the sea-god’s protean nature, the substance of international law may well undergo alterations when examined through the telescope of legal culture, or with predispositions of divergent educational backgrounds. For the thoughtful reader, scholarly speculation on such variations will be triggered by reading Is International Law International?. In that book, Professor Anthea Roberts explores a variety of elements in the teaching and practice of international law, viewed through the lenses of scholars and judges from different parts of the world

Douglas MacArthur\u27s Nation-Building: The Reconstruction of Japan

At the end of World War II, Japan was militarily and economically devastated; Hiroshima and Nagasaki were radiated ruins; and the people were on the brink of starvation. Japan’s situation in 1945 looked very bleak as its people slowly began to rebuild their lives and move past years of bloody war. Transforming Japan meant replacing a military state focused on expansion with a parliamentary democracy focused on economic prosperity through innovation, industry, and peace. The American occupation lasted eight years and by the 1960s the Japanese economy was well on its ways to becoming the third largest in the world. General Douglas MacArthur was the man most responsible for Japan’s reconstruction. The Japanese willingness to restructure their political system, economy, and society combined with the leadership of MacArthur and the autonomy he wielded as Supreme Commander, brought the country into a new era of peaceful prosperity, innovation, industrial strength, and stability

The Role of Spatial Networks in the Historic Urban Landscape: Learning from Venice in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries

The 2011 Historic Urban Landscape Recommendation (HUL) by UNESCO defines cities as dynamic environments subject to cultural processes, tangible/intangible heritage and community values, leaving some key questions open. Is the heritage sector better defining historic places, or because their complexity defies verbal description, it re-iterates simplified concepts? Are existing boundaries between disciplines such as architecture, planning and landscape design enriching or constraining heritage? This paper analyses the urban morphology of Venice and the Piazza San Marco, a key context in which architecture emerges as legitimised vehicle for urban regeneration in early modernity. Looking at the relationship between the Piazza and the urban networks of Venice alongside intangible spatial practices and symbols, the paper makes three contributions to urban conservation: a) it defines the HUL as the interrelationship of the anonymous city with the authored products of design, b) it revisits the foundations of early modern consciousness about architecture, urban conservation and innovation in order to better understand interdisciplinary knowledge in the heritage sector and c) it approaches heritage as social construction, involving the selection of structures, from buildings to entire areas, and from legal documents and political instruments to ideologies through which societies are seen from dominant positions, often disguising conflict

Swords into Plowshares: A Pilgrimage for the CSS Alabama

During the American Civil War, Britain sold ships to the Southern Confederacy in breach of neutrality obligations, triggering a dispute with the United States carrying threats of armed conflict. Some American politicians saw the dispute as an opportunity to annex Canada, then a weak assemblage of British colonies. Ultimately, arbitration in Geneva averted war, opening an era of long Anglo-American cooperation. The historical consequence of this landmark 1872 arbitration remains difficult to overstate. In addition to its diplomatic importance, the case introduced significant procedural precedents for international arbitration, including dissenting options, reasoned awards, party-appointed arbitrators, collegial deliberations, and arbitrators’ declarations on their own jurisdiction. The saga of the CSS Alabama, the vessel from which the arbitration took its name, provides a narrative as griping in detail as the arbitral proceedings prove meaningful in legal legacy
