    A Data-driven Approach to Robust Control of Multivariable Systems by Convex Optimization

    The frequency-domain data of a multivariable system in different operating points is used to design a robust controller with respect to the measurement noise and multimodel uncertainty. The controller is fully parametrized in terms of matrix polynomial functions and can be formulated as a centralized, decentralized or distributed controller. All standard performance specifications like H2H_2, H∞H_\infty and loop shaping are considered in a unified framework for continuous- and discrete-time systems. The control problem is formulated as a convex-concave optimization problem and then convexified by linearization of the concave part around an initial controller. The performance criterion converges monotonically to a local optimal solution in an iterative algorithm. The effectiveness of the method is compared with fixed-structure controllers using non-smooth optimization and with full-order optimal controllers via simulation examples. Finally, the experimental data of a gyroscope is used to design a data-driven controller that is successfully applied on the real system

    Control and structural optimization for maneuvering large spacecraft

    Presented here are the results of an advanced control design as well as a discussion of the requirements for automating both the structures and control design efforts for maneuvering a large spacecraft. The advanced control application addresses a general three dimensional slewing problem, and is applied to a large geostationary platform. The platform consists of two flexible antennas attached to the ends of a flexible truss. The control strategy involves an open-loop rigid body control profile which is derived from a nonlinear optimal control problem and provides the main control effort. A perturbation feedback control reduces the response due to the flexibility of the structure. Results are shown which demonstrate the usefulness of the approach. Software issues are considered for developing an integrated structures and control design environment

    Shaping of molecular weight distribution by iterative learning probability density function control strategies

    A mathematical model is developed for the molecular weight distribution (MWD) of free-radical styrene polymerization in a simulated semi-batch reactor system. The generation function technique and moment method are employed to establish the MWD model in the form of Schultz-Zimmdistribution. Both static and dynamic models are described in detail. In order to achieve the closed-loop MWD shaping by output probability density function (PDF) control, the dynamic MWD model is further developed by a linear B-spline approximation. Based on the general form of the B-spline MWD model, iterative learning PDF control strategies have been investigated in order to improve the MWD control performance. Discussions on the simulation studies show the advantages and limitations of the methodology

    Improved shaping approach to the preliminary design of low-thrust trajectories

    This paper presents a general framework for the development of shape-based approaches to low-thrust trajectory design. A novel shaping method, based on a three-dimensional description of the trajectory in spherical coordinates, is developed within this general framework. Both the exponential sinusoid and the inverse polynomial shaping are demonstrated to be particular two-dimensional cases of the spherical one. The pseudoequinoctial shaping is revisited within the new framework, and the nonosculating nature of the pseudoequinoctial elements is analyzed. A two step approach is introduced to solve the time of flight constraint, related to the design of low-thrust arcs with boundary constraints for both spherical and pseudoequinoctial shaping. The solution derived from the shaping approach is improved with a feedback linear-quadratic controller and compared against a direct collocation method based on finite elements in time. The new shaping approach and the combination of shaping and linear-quadratic controller are tested on three case studies: a mission to Mars, a mission to asteroid 1989ML, a mission to comet Tempel-1, and a mission to Neptune

    Incremental solution of LTMGA transfers transcribed with an advanced shaping approach

    In the last decade the global optimisation of low-thrust multi-gravity assist transfers (LTMGA) has been tackled with different approaches. Some authors proposed to generate a first guess solution by building a multi-gravity assist transfer with impulsive manoeuvres and then using a direct or an indirect method to transcribe the multi-impulse arcs into low-thrust arcs. Other authors, notably Petropoulos et al. (2002), De Pascale et al. (2006), Wall et al. (2008) and SchĂŒtze et al. (2009), proposed the use of several forms of trajectory shaping to model low-thrust arcs. The disadvantage in all these studies is that the swingbys are powered and therefore suggest the use of high thrust propulsion along with the low thrust propulsion on board the spacecraft. The problem generally resides in the lack of flexibility of the low thrust trajectory models to satisfy a variety of boundary conditions. In this paper, a spherical shaping model is used whereby all encountered types of boundary constraints are satisfied analytically. Furthermore, a special incremental pruning of the search space is performed before employing a global optimiser. The process is conceptually equivalent to the approach proposed by Becerra et al. for the search space pruning of multi-gravity assist trajectories and exploits the decoupling of pairs of transfer arcs. Such decoupling removes the dependency of one arc from all those that are two or more before, and allows for pruning the search space in polynomial time. Numerical examples are presented for LTMGA transfers from Earth to asteroid Apollo and Earth to Jupiter

    Feedback MPC for Torque-Controlled Legged Robots

    The computational power of mobile robots is currently insufficient to achieve torque level whole-body Model Predictive Control (MPC) at the update rates required for complex dynamic systems such as legged robots. This problem is commonly circumvented by using a fast tracking controller to compensate for model errors between updates. In this work, we show that the feedback policy from a Differential Dynamic Programming (DDP) based MPC algorithm is a viable alternative to bridge the gap between the low MPC update rate and the actuation command rate. We propose to augment the DDP approach with a relaxed barrier function to address inequality constraints arising from the friction cone. A frequency-dependent cost function is used to reduce the sensitivity to high-frequency model errors and actuator bandwidth limits. We demonstrate that our approach can find stable locomotion policies for the torque-controlled quadruped, ANYmal, both in simulation and on hardware.Comment: Paper accepted to IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS 2019

    Optimisation of the weighting functions of an H<sub>∞</sub> controller using genetic algorithms and structured genetic algorithms

    In this paper the optimisation of the weighting functions for an H&lt;sub&gt;∞&lt;/sub&gt; controller using genetic algorithms and structured genetic algorithms is considered. The choice of the weighting functions is one of the key steps in the design of an H&lt;sub&gt;∞&lt;/sub&gt; controller. The performance of the controller depends on these weighting functions since poorly chosen weighting functions will provide a poor controller. One approach that can solve this problem is the use of evolutionary techniques to tune the weighting parameters. The paper presents the improved performance of structured genetic algorithms over conventional genetic algorithms and how this technique can assist with the identification of appropriate weighting functions' orders
