    Coulometer battery state-of-charge indicator

    Get PDF
Mercury-column electrochemical coulometer is a linear ampere-hour integrating device consisting of a sealed glass tube containing two columns of mercury separated by a gap containing an electrolyte. The drive circuit uses operational amplifier techniques to match nonlinear charge-discharge characteristics of an alkaline battery

    Vehicle lead-acid battery state-of-charge meter

We describe a state-of-charge, or “residual-capacity” meter for lead-acid batteries that intelligently synthesizes coulometric and terminal-voltage methods in a new algorithm to provide reliable, continuous readout of remaining capacity. Novel electronic circuit design eliminates the need to install a shunt in the vehicle. The meter learns the characteristics of a battery to which it is attached, removing the need for setup, customisation, programming or calibration at time of installation or battery replacement. The meter can thus be installed by unqualified personnel. Initial measurements suggest the design to be robust and accurate

Topological Dislocations and Mixed State of Charge Density Waves

We discuss the possibility of the ``mixed state'' in incommensurate charge density waves with three-dimensional order. It is shown that the mixed state can be created by applying an electric field perpendicular to the chains. This state consists of topological dislocations induced by the external field and is therefore similar to the mixed states of superfluids (type-II superconductor or liquid Helium II). However, the peculiar coupling of charge density waves with the electric field strongly modifies the nature of the mixed state compared to the conventional superfluids. The field and temperature dependence of the properties of the mixed state are studied, and some experimental aspects are discussed.Comment: 10 pages, Revtex format, no figures, to appear in Phys. Smart and Accurate State-of-Charge Indication in Portable Applications

    Get PDF
Accurate State-of-Charge (SoC) and remaining run-time indication for portable devices is important for the user-convenience and to prolong the lifetime of batteries. However, the known methods of SoC indication in portable applications are not accurate enough under all practical conditions. The method presented in this paper aims at designing and testing an SoC indication system capable of predicting the remaining capacity of the battery and the remaining run-time with an accuracy of 1 minute or better under all realistic user conditions, including a wide variety of load currents and a wide temperature range. At the moment Li-ion is the most commonly used battery chemistry in portable applications. Therefore, the focus is on SoC indication for Li-ion batteries. The basis of the proposed algorithm is current measurement and integration during charge and discharge state and voltage measurement during equilibrium state. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the presented novel approach for improving the accuracy of the SoC indication

Kalman-variant estimators for state of charge in lithium-sulfur batteries

    Get PDF
Lithium-sulfur batteries are now commercially available, offering high specific energy density, low production costs and high safety. However, there is no commercially-available battery management system for them, and there are no published methods for determining state of charge in situ. This paper describes a study to address this gap. The properties and behaviours of lithium-sulfur are briefly introduced, and the applicability of ‘standard’ lithium-ion state-of-charge estimation methods is explored. Open-circuit voltage methods and ‘Coulomb counting’ are found to have a poor fit for lithium-sulfur, and model-based methods, particularly recursive Bayesian filters, are identified as showing strong promise. Three recursive Bayesian filters are implemented: an extended Kalman filter (EKF), an unscented Kalman filter (UKF) and a particle filter (PF). These estimators are tested through practical experimentation, considering both a pulse-discharge test and a test based on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). Experimentation is carried out at a constant temperature, mirroring the environment expected in the authors' target automotive application. It is shown that the estimators, which are based on a relatively simple equivalent-circuit–network model, can deliver useful results. If the three estimators implemented, the unscented Kalman filter gives the most robust and accurate performance, with an acceptable computational effort

Automating Estimation of Battery State of Charge Using Experimental Data in MatLab

    Get PDF
This paper explains how to estimate the state of charge (SOC) of a battery using implementation of characteristics governing equations and and lookup table. Look up table containing experimental data like charging resistance, discharging resistance and battery voltage in an excel sheet. Estimation of state of charge as a function of voltage is simulated with the help of experimental data in the form of lookup table in Matlab simulink and mscript. A 4V battery was charged and discharged at a 2.3 ampere for an hour. Matlab simulunk model with m.scipt is developed to determine terminal voltage and state of charge is obtained at any given time
