Robust stability conditions for remote SISO DMC controller in networked control systems

A two level hierarchy is employed in the design of Networked Control Systems (NCSs) with bounded random transmission delay. At the lower level a local controller is designed to stabilize the plant. At the higher level a remote controller with the Dynamic Matrix Control (DMC) algorithm is implemented to regulate the desirable set-point for the local controller. The conventional DMC algorithm is not applicable due to the unknown transmission delay in NCSs. To meet the requirements of a networked environment, a new remote DMC controller is proposed in this study. Two methods, maximum delayed output feedback and multi-rate sampling, are used to cope with the delayed feedback sensory data. Under the assumption that the closed-loop local system is described by one FIR model of an FIR model family, the robust stability problem of the remote DMC controller is investigated. Applying Jury's dominant coefficient lemma and some stability results of switching discrete-time systems with multiple delays; several stability criteria are obtained in the form of simple inequalities. Finally, some numerical simulations are given to demonstrate the theoretical results

Delay-independent dual-rate PID controller for a packet-based networked control system

[EN] In this paper, a novel delay-independent control structure for a networked control system (NCS) is proposed, where packet-based control strategies with predictor-based and dual-rate control techniques are integrated. The control solution is able to cope with some networked communication problems such as time-varying delays, packet dropouts and packet disorder. In addition, the proposed approach enables to reduce network load, and usage of connected devices, while maintaining a satisfactory control performance. As a delay-independent control solution, no network-induced delay measurement is needed for controller implementation. In addition, the control scheme is applicable to open-loop unstable plants. Control system stability is ensured in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Simulation results show the main benefits of the control approach, which are experimentally validated by means of a Cartesian-robot-based test-bed platform. (C) 2019 Elsevier Inc. Robustness and Stability Analysis of a Predictive PI Controller in WirelessHART Network Characterised by Stochastic Delay

As control over wireless network in the industry is receives increasing attention, its application comes with challenges such as stochastic network delay. The PIDs are ill equipped to handle such challenges while the model based controllers are complex. A settlement between the two is the PPI controller. However, there is no certainty on its ability to preserve closed loop stability under such challenges. While classical robustness measures do not require extensive uncertainty modelling, they do not guarantee stability under simultaneous process and network delay variations. On the other hand, the model uncertainty measures tend to be conservative. Thus, this work uses extended complementary sensitivity function method which handles simultaneously those challenges. Simulation results shows that the PPI controller can guarantee stability even under model and delay uncertainties

Study on State Predictive Controllers for Networked Control System

When different control components of a closed loop control system are connected through a common network channel then the resulting control system is a Networked Control System. This spatially distributed system has several advantages like reduced system wiring, easy fault detection and maintenance capability.Unfortunately the introduction of communication channel results in several disadvantages like network induced delays and packet dropouts leading to loss of synchronism in the control system. The network induced imperfections causes system instability and complexity for the control engineers to design a suitable controller in order to compensate their effect on closed loop control system. In addition to the complexity in design the network induced imperfections should be measured, analysed by incorporating them in the closed loop control system. The project investigates the problem of network induced time delays in a networked control system by studying the behaviour of network induced time delay in a control system controlled by Linear Quadratic controller or a Pole placement controller using the states obtained from discrete Kalman filter state estimation, which estimates the current state in the presence of state and output noises. Further a control augmentation method is used by incorporating network induced delay in the plant model control vector. The time delayed control vector creates difficulty in designing the controller which is solved by time shifting approach. Further a state predictor is designed by using plant model transition matrix to predict the future states from present and past values of control vector and state estimate. Hence an optimal predictive controller is designed wherein the Linear Quadratic or pole placement controller uses the predictive state obtained from the state predictor to compensate the effect of network induced time delay and improve the control system performance
