A review of convex approaches for control, observation and safety of linear parameter varying and Takagi-Sugeno systems
This paper provides a review about the concept of convex systems based on Takagi-Sugeno, linear parameter varying (LPV) and quasi-LPV modeling. These paradigms are capable of hiding the nonlinearities by means of an equivalent description which uses a set of linear models interpolated by appropriately defined weighing functions. Convex systems have become very popular since they allow applying extended linear techniques based on linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) to complex nonlinear systems. This survey aims at providing the reader with a significant overview of the existing LMI-based techniques for convex systems in the fields of control, observation and safety. Firstly, a detailed review of stability, feedback, tracking and model predictive control (MPC) convex controllers is considered. Secondly, the problem of state estimation is addressed through the design of proportional, proportional-integral, unknown input and descriptor observers. Robust Fault Detection of Switched Linear Systems with State Delays
This correspondence deals with the problem of robust fault detection for discrete-time switched systems with state delays under an arbitrary switching signal. The fault detection filter is used as the residual generator, in which the filter parameters are dependent on the system mode. Attention is focused on designing the robust fault detection filter such that, for unknown inputs, control inputs, and model uncertainties, the estimation error between the residuals and faults is minimized. The problem of robust fault detection is converted into an H infin-filtering problem. By a switched Lyapunov functional approach, a sufficient condition for the solvability of this problem is established in terms of linear matrix inequalities. A numerical example is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method
Time-and event-driven communication process for networked control systems: A survey

This is an open access article distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited.In recent years, theoretical and practical research topics on networked control systems (NCSs) have gained an increasing interest from many researchers in a variety of disciplines owing to the extensive applications of NCSs in practice. In particular, an urgent need has arisen to understand the effects of communication processes on system performances. Sampling and protocol are two fundamental aspects of a communication process which have attracted a great deal of research attention. Most research focus has been on the analysis and control of dynamical behaviors under certain sampling procedures and communication protocols. In this paper, we aim to survey some recent advances on the analysis and synthesis issues of NCSs with different sampling procedures (time-and event-driven sampling) and protocols (static and dynamic protocols). First, these sampling procedures and protocols are introduced in detail according to their engineering backgrounds as well as dynamic natures. Then, the developments of the stabilization, control, and filtering problems are systematically reviewed and discussed in great detail. Filtering for nonlinear genetic regulatory networks with stochastic disturbances
In this paper, the filtering problem is investigated for nonlinear genetic regulatory networks with stochastic disturbances and time delays, where the nonlinear function describing the feedback regulation is assumed to satisfy the sector condition, the stochastic perturbation is in the form of a scalar Brownian motion, and the time delays exist in both the translation process and the feedback regulation process. The purpose of the addressed filtering problem is to estimate the true concentrations of the mRNA and protein. Specifically, we are interested in designing a linear filter such that, in the presence of time delays, stochastic disturbances as well as sector nonlinearities, the filtering dynamics of state estimation for the stochastic genetic regulatory network is exponentially mean square stable with a prescribed decay rate lower bound beta. By using the linear matrix inequality (LMI) technique, sufficient conditions are first derived for ensuring the desired filtering performance for the gene regulatory model, and the filter gain is then characterized in terms of the solution to an LMI, which can be easily solved by using standard software packages. A simulation example is exploited in order to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed design procedures

H∞ fault estimation with randomly occurring uncertainties, quantization effects and successive packet dropouts: The finite-horizon case
In this paper, the finite-horizon H∞ fault estimation problem is investigated for a class of uncertain nonlinear time-varying systems subject to multiple stochastic delays. The randomly occurring uncertainties (ROUs) enter into the system due to the random fluctuations of network conditions. The measured output is quantized by a logarithmic quantizer before being transmitted to the fault estimator. Also, successive packet dropouts (SPDs) happen when the quantized signals are transmitted through an unreliable network medium. Three mutually independent sets of Bernoulli-distributed white sequences are introduced to govern the multiple stochastic delays, ROUs and SPDs. By employing the stochastic analysis approach, some sufficient conditions are established for the desired finite-horizon fault estimator to achieve the specified H∞ performance. The time-varying parameters of the fault estimator are obtained by solving a set of recursive linear matrix inequalities. Finally, an illustrative numerical example is provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed fault estimation approach
Filter Design for Positive T-S Fuzzy Continuous-Time Systems with Time Delay Using Piecewise-Linear Membership Functions

The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.This work focuses on the filtering problem and stability analysis for positive Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy systems with time delay under L1-induced performance. Due to the importance of estimation of system states but the few filter design results on positive nonlinear systems, it is an attractive and meaningful topic well worth studying. In order to fully exploit and take advantage of the positivity of positive T-S fuzzy systems, many commonly used methods, for instance free-weighting matrix approach and similarity transformation are probably not suitable for positive systems. To address the hard-nut-to-crack problem, an auxiliary variable is introduced so that the augmentation approach can be employed to carry out the positivity and stability analysis of filtering error systems. In addition, another obstacle that cannot be ignored is the existence of non-convex terms in the stability and positivity conditions. For getting around this barrier, some iterative linear matrix inequality (ILMI) algorithms have been proposed in the literature. However, considering the weakness that these methods cannot guarantee the convergence to a numerical solution and the iterative process is exhaustive, we present an effective matrix decoupling method to convert the nonconvex conditions into convex ones in this paper. Furthermore, a linear co-positive Lyapunov function which incorporates the positivity of system states and time delay at the same time is chosen so that the positivity characteristic of filtering error systems can be captured further. However, because of plenty of valuable information of membership functions (MFs) being ignored, hence, the obtained results are conservative. For the sake of relaxing the conservativeness, the advanced piecewise-linear membership functions (PLMFs) approximate method is utilized to facilitate the stability and positivity analysis. Therefore, the relaxed stability and positivity conditions which are cast as sum of squares (SOS) are obtained and can be solved numerically. Finally, the effectiveness of the designed fuzzy filtering strategy with satisfying L1-induced performance are demonstrated by a simulation example
