    RGBD Datasets: Past, Present and Future

    Since the launch of the Microsoft Kinect, scores of RGBD datasets have been released. These have propelled advances in areas from reconstruction to gesture recognition. In this paper we explore the field, reviewing datasets across eight categories: semantics, object pose estimation, camera tracking, scene reconstruction, object tracking, human actions, faces and identification. By extracting relevant information in each category we help researchers to find appropriate data for their needs, and we consider which datasets have succeeded in driving computer vision forward and why. Finally, we examine the future of RGBD datasets. We identify key areas which are currently underexplored, and suggest that future directions may include synthetic data and dense reconstructions of static and dynamic scenes.Comment: 8 pages excluding references (CVPR style

    Deep Learning for Face Anti-Spoofing: A Survey

    Face anti-spoofing (FAS) has lately attracted increasing attention due to its vital role in securing face recognition systems from presentation attacks (PAs). As more and more realistic PAs with novel types spring up, traditional FAS methods based on handcrafted features become unreliable due to their limited representation capacity. With the emergence of large-scale academic datasets in the recent decade, deep learning based FAS achieves remarkable performance and dominates this area. However, existing reviews in this field mainly focus on the handcrafted features, which are outdated and uninspiring for the progress of FAS community. In this paper, to stimulate future research, we present the first comprehensive review of recent advances in deep learning based FAS. It covers several novel and insightful components: 1) besides supervision with binary label (e.g., '0' for bonafide vs. '1' for PAs), we also investigate recent methods with pixel-wise supervision (e.g., pseudo depth map); 2) in addition to traditional intra-dataset evaluation, we collect and analyze the latest methods specially designed for domain generalization and open-set FAS; and 3) besides commercial RGB camera, we summarize the deep learning applications under multi-modal (e.g., depth and infrared) or specialized (e.g., light field and flash) sensors.     A study of deep learning and its applications to face recognition techniques

    El siguiente trabajo es el resultado de la tesis de maestría de Fernando Suzacq. La tesis se centró alrededor de la investigación sobre el reconocimiento facial en 3D, sin la reconstrucción de la profundidad ni la utilización de modelos 3D genéricos. Esta investigación resultó en la escritura de un paper y su posterior publicación en IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence. Mediante el uso de iluminación activa, se mejora el reconocimiento facial en 2D y se lo hace más robusto a condiciones de baja iluminación o ataques de falsificación de identidad. La idea central del trabajo es la proyección de un patrón de luz de alta frecuencia sobre la cara de prueba. De la captura de esta imagen, nos es posible recuperar información real 3D, que se desprende de las deformaciones de este patrón, junto con una imagen 2D de la cara de prueba. Este proceso evita tener que lidiar con la difícil tarea de reconstrucción 3D. En el trabajo se presenta la teoría que fundamenta este proceso, se explica su construcción y se proveen los resultados de distintos experimentos realizados que sostienen su validez y utilidad. Para el desarrollo de esta investigación, fue necesario el estudio de la teoría existente y una revisión del estado del arte en este problema particular. Parte del resultado de este trabajo se presenta también en este documento, como marco teórico sobre la publicación

    Anti-spoofing using challenge-response user interaction

    2D facial identification has attracted a great amount of attention over the past years, due to its several advantages including practicality and simple requirements. However, without its capability to recognize a real user from an impersonator, face identification system becomes ineffective and vulnerable to spoof attacks. With the great evolution of smart portable devices, more advanced sorts of attacks have been developed, especially the replayed videos spoofing attempts that are becoming more difficult to recognize. Consequently, several studies have investigated the types of vulnerabilities a face biometric system might encounter and proposed various successful anti-spoofing algorithms. Unlike spoofing detection for passive or motionless authentication methods that were profoundly studied, anti-spoofing systems applied on interactive user verification methods were broadly examined as a potential robust spoofing prevention approach. This study aims first at comparing the performance of the existing spoofing detection techniques on passive and interactive authentication methods using a more balanced collected dataset and second proposes a fusion scheme that combines both texture analysis with interaction in order to enhance the accuracy of spoofing detection

    Biometric Liveness Detection Using Gaze Information

    This thesis is concerned with liveness detection for biometric systems and in particular for face recognition systems. Biometric systems are well studied and have the potential to provide satisfactory solutions for a variety of applications. However, presentation attacks (spoofng), where an attempt is made at subverting them system by making a deliberate presentation at the sensor is a serious challenge to their use in unattended applications. Liveness detection techniques can help with protecting biometric systems from attacks made through the presentation of artefacts and recordings at the sensor. In this work novel techniques for liveness detection are presented using gaze information. The notion of natural gaze stability is introduced and used to develop a number of novel features that rely on directing the gaze of the user and establishing its behaviour. These features are then used to develop systems for detecting spoofng attempts. The attack scenarios considered in this work include the use of hand held photos and photo masks as well as video reply to subvert the system. The proposed features and systems based on them were evaluated extensively using data captured from genuine and fake attempts. The results of the evaluations indicate that gaze-based features can be used to discriminate between genuine and imposter. Combining features through feature selection and score fusion substantially improved the performance of the proposed features
