Editorial: Computers & Graphics journal special section on cultural heritage

Editorial special sectionAn increasing number of Cultural Heritage professionals are using Computer Graphics technology to unlock and document the secrets of humanity's legacy. Earlier this year, a recent special issue of this journal published some of the important results from the intersection of these two fields [1]. The level of interest and the quality of submissions was such that an additional special section is necessary to showcase three further exciting results. Andujar et al. [2] discuss the design of the user interface for the virtual inspection of the entrance of the Ripoll Monastery in Spain. The authors analyze the requirements from museum curators and discuss the main interface design decisions. Results of a user study comparing the proposed user interface with alternative approaches are provided together with a discussion of its benefits to the Cultural Heritage Community. Adán et al. [3] propose a semi-automatic approach for the reconstruction of archeological pieces through the integration of a set of only a few segments of the original piece. This highly complex problem is tackled by considering hybrid human/computer strategies. Hypotheses, models and integration solutions originating from both humans and computers are continuously updated until an agreement is reached. This restoration approach has been tested on a set of ancient fractured pieces belonging to the remains of Roman sculptures at the well known Mérida site. Finally, Ritz et al. [4] present a novel 3D geometry acquisition technique at high resolution based on structured light reconstruction with a low-cost projector-camera system. The proposed setup allows reconstruction of the finest details of small cultural heritage objects and enables accurate height field measurements which can be used as input to physically based renderers. The cooperation between the diverse fields of cultural heritage and computer graphics is maturing. Researchers and practitioners in both fields now regularly work closely together. Many more high quality publications are expected as the synergies between the two disciplines are realized in future collaborations

Looted and illegally acquired African objects in European museums: issues of restitution and repatriation in Ghana

Ghana’s post-independence governments have made a number of requests for the return of looted and illegally acquired Ghanaian cultural objects in the collections of European museums. While the majority of those requests were denied, a few were honoured. This paper assesses three of the demands and the aftermath of their return. It also examines the preparedness of heritage institutions and museums in Ghana inrelation to issues of restitution and repatriation. The paper identifies the numerous challenges confronting the museum and heritage sector in Ghana and concludes by calling on policy makers, traditional authorities, universities and the government of Ghana to deepen public awareness of cultural heritage, invest more in museums and heritage institutions to function well and revisit earlier demands that were denied

Obtención de mapas 2.5D mediante RTI (Reflectance Transformation Imaging) para su aplicación en el Patrimonio Escultórico, Arqueológico, Arquitectónico y Urbano.

Desde los orígenes, el ser humano ha tratado de encontrar métodos que mejoren o posibiliten alcanzar objetivos que el cuerpo humano es incapaz. Aunque éste es altamente complejo, no es perfecto y el ojo humano es limitado en términos de profundidad (visión estereo) y color. Por ello se crea el método de trabajo conocido como Flujo Clásico para RTI, que posibilita extraer información oculta de objetos con mínima variación de cota. 1. Realidad Objeto 2. Toma de Fotos Domo con Luces en determinadas posiciones y Cámara Cenital 3. Generación PTM RTIBuilder (X, Y, Normal Vector) 4. Visor RTIViewer (SnapShot) Este flujo de trabajo parte de un objeto de tamaño pequeño. Al cual se le aplica, junto a un par de esferas reflectivas, una serie de fotografías mediante una cámara cenital y diferentes posiciones de proyección de luz inscritas en un Domo geométrico para mantener las equidistancias a la superficie de análisis. Tras ello se pasa al trabajo en ordenador donde se genera un archivo de superficies de normales (*.ptm o *.hsh) mediante los algoritmos de Polynomial Texture Mapping o Hemispherical Harmonics en RTIBuilder. El cual puede ser analizado mediante el Visor que presenta el RTIViewer. Este Flujo de Trabajo Clásico no puede afrontar factores como la luz natural, transforma las direcciones de la proyección de la iluminación, o las dimensiones del objeto/edificación/terreno a trabajar. Nos complace presentaros el segundo número del año de Perifèria, Revista de Investigación y Formación en Antropología. En esta ocasión contamos con doce nuevas publicaciones y una amplia variedad de géneros. En la sección habitual de Artículos publicamos cuatro textos sobre antropología con temáticas muy diversas e interesantes ubicadas en el primer caso en el contexto de Cataluña y España, y el resto en el contexto latinoamericano. Contamos con la sección especial de Patrimonio Cultural de la mano del alumnado del seminario de "Teorías e investigaciones avanzadas" del grado de Antropología Social y Cultural de la UAB impartido por la profesora Isabel Graupera. En la sección de Entrevista investigamos las relaciones entre sociedad y agua en el Desierto de Atacama con Manuel Prieto, un experto internacional en la temática. En la sección habitual de Reseñas os presentamos la Reseña de "Una noche de espanto. Los otomíes en la obscuridad", "Memórias da plantação" y la Reseña de "No es negociable: Desperdicio alimentario y relaciones de poder en la cadena agroalimentaria". Acabamos con una noticia en la sección de Grupos de Investigación que, siguiendo la línea de la sección especial sobre patrimonio, nos presenta la XIPE (la Xarxa d'Interès sobre Patrimoni Etnològic). On this occasion we have twelve new publications and a wide variety of genres. In the usual section of Articles we publish four texts on anthropology with very diverse and interesting themes located in the first case in the context of Catalonia and Spain, and the rest in the Latin American context. We have a special section on Cultural Heritage by the students of the seminar on "Theories and advanced research" of the degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology at the UAB taught by Professor Isabel Graupera. In the Interview section, we investigate the relationships between society and water in the Atacama Desert with Manuel Prieto, an international expert on the subject. In the usual section of Reviews we present you the Review of "A night of fright. The Otomi in the dark", "Memórias da plantação" and the Review of "It is not negotiable: Food waste and power relations in the agri-food chain". We end with a piece of news in the Research Groups section that, following the line of the special section on heritage, is presented by the XIPE (la Xarxa d'Interès sobre Patrimoni Etnològic). Special section on cultural heritage

Over the last two decades, there have been many high profile success stories where cutting edge computer graphics (CG) technology was used in collaboration with cultural heritage (CH) professionals to unlock the secrets of humanity’s legacy. Well known examples include the empirical 3D acquisition of Michelangelo’s David, the laser scan-based 3D mapping of the tombs found in the Valley of the Kings and the decipherment of the instructions to and the operation of the 2nd-century BCE Antikythera Mechanism—arguably the first computer in human kind history. This special edition of Computers and Graphics contains new work that continues this tradition

Benvolguts lectors, Ens complau presentar-vos el número 23(2), de la revista Perifèria. Revista de Recerca i Formació en Antropologia. En aquest número comptem amb sis articles que mostren la varietat de temes i contextos complexos que aborda actualment l'antropologia. El nostre viatge comença a Llatinoamèrica, sempre present en la revista. De l'anàlisi de l'impacte del turisme a les terres mapuche a Xile (Fontana), passem a les cures i la capacitat d'agència als afores de Buenos Aires (Kunin) i acabem amb la percepció del món camperol colombià (Díaz et al.). D'aquí donem un salt atlàntic per conèixer la trama cultural d'una escola a Moçambic (García), ens acostem a la performativitat contemporània dels cossos (Anta i García) i aterrem en el context català per veure com existeix el mal d'ull. També, de la mà d'Isabel Graupera i de l'observació participant de tres grups d'estudiants d'antropologia, comptem amb una secció especial de ressenyes sobre Patrimoni Cultural que ens acosta a la casa La Ricarda, un referent de l'arquitectura racionalista situada al Prat de Llobregat (província de Barcelona). Finalment, dos ressenyes de llibres molt actuals ens interpel·len per conèixer més sobre les pràctiques informals a nivell global (Fradejas-García) i sobre les perspectives cognitives i el gènere al País Basc (Alemany). In this issue, we count with six articles that show the variety of complex topics and contexts addressed currently by the Anthropology. Our trip begins in Latin America, always present in this journal. From the analysis of the impact of tourism on Mapuche lands in Chile (Fontana), we turn to the care and agency capacity in the outskirts of Buenos Aires (Kunin) and end with the perception of the Colombian peasant world (Díaz et al.). From there we take an Atlantic leap to know the cultural plot of a school in Mozambique (García), we approach the contemporary performativity of bodies (Anta and García) and land in the Catalan context to see how the evil eye exists. Also, at the hands of Isabel Graupera and the participant observation of three groups of anthropology students, we have a special section on Cultural Heritage reviews that brings us closer to the La Ricarda house, a benchmark of rationalist architecture located in El Prat de Llobregat (province of Barcelona). Finally, two reviews of brand-new books call us to learn more about informal practices at the global level (Fradejas-García) and about cognitive perspectives and gender in the Basque Country (Alemany).
